Welcome to Emmanuel Lutheran

We are an inclusive faith community that seeks to live the Word and Way of Christ’s unconditional love.

This means that, like Christ, we believe each person is a beloved child of God, regardless of shape, size, economic status, reli-

gious background, sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender identity, or anything else that could divide us.

We give thanks to God for the unique identities

with which we are created, and have found here a fellowship of believers that accepts us just as we are.

Come worship with us and enjoy full participation in all aspects of

our life together, including baptism, confirmation, communion, marriage and burial.

More than fifty years ago Lutheran Christian missionaries arrived in Rock Point, AZ, a remote, isolated village near the Four Corners area where Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah meet. The very first building on this land was a combined church, clinic and two apartments built in early 1954. Today Rock Point is a gas station and convenience store, a Laundromat and post office, High School, a Chapter House and Senior Center –and 3000 people living on the land in family clans. The Mission campus provides a charter school site for K-6th grade for 70 children, a Private Christian Kindergarten, Health Clinic “Wellness Center”, and an ELCA congregation, the House of Prayer.

As a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Education Association (ELEA), our Mission School is a private Christian school serving children from Kindergarten to sixth grades. Through the generous support and donations of Christians from all denominations, the Mission School is able to provide children with educational opportunities that complement the classroom curriculum. When possible, upon registration, each child receives a backpack containing school supplies (including notebook paper, pencils, glue, and crayons) and a personal hygiene kit (including a bar of soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, and a hand towel). The students often live in areas with limited to no access to electric-ity and/or water. The Mission addresses this need by providing showers for student use throughout the school year. The Mission School is an elementary school serving children in Kindergarten through 6th grade. The students who attend the Mission School come from the surrounding Rock Point area. Finishing Well: Faithfully Completing a Ministry Career. For the past three months, I have been sharing insights from a 2008 Alban Institute Workshop on retirement. A quick review of the previous three themes and a proposing fourth teaching:

Sacred Threshold….a passing over into the next chapter for both Kirk & the Church. Soul Signals…..paying attention to those things that give life, energize and empower. The Temptation of Silence….do not prematurely silence your voice. Say Good-Bye....finishing well means taking the time to say good-bye.

At this workshop, we were asked to write down words associated with or synonymous with the word RETIRE. I recall the list the group developed:

to go away to disconnect to withdraw to step down to retreat to draw back to finish to exit

I wonder what word you might add to the list or what word you selected as best representing what is going on when one retires from one’s life work. I personally selected the word EXIT. In the realm of theater, one exits, one departs from the stage left or right (probably left). The word contains a sense of closure. In order to make a “graceful exist” it is important to say good-bye. During the months of August and September, I will be intentionally taking some time to say farewell. Over these nineteen years, I have enjoyed developing meaningful relationships with you. Pastors like making attachments, we don’t like to face the pending goodbye and separation. This good-bye might occur by personal visit, personal note or phone call, but I will want to say thank you for the privilege of these years together in ministry. I will also want to discuss the future of Emmanuel and affirm each person’s role to play.

During the workshop, we wrote a letter to ourselves – anticipating a future retirement date – sealed the letter in 2008 and just recently opened July, 2017. Imagine my surprise when I saw the date on the letter - November 30, 2017.

Dear Kirk, I write this letter from the La Casa de Maria Retreat Center n Santa Barbara, CA.

Do you remember those days when we envisioned this day of retirement? I want to say to you: You did well! You finished well – your passion for the Word that is Christ sustained you well. I have to say your ideas about programs and buildings didn’t work out. You always were so idealistic but I love that spirit in you. You always were able to dream and see the future possibilities. This part of you has served you well – don’t feel badly that not everything got accomplished.

Your soul has been prepared for this day. Welcome to the Third Age, an age of great joy. p.s. Keep in touch with John Kautz Your friend, kirk

“God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) – one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. Since 2013, thousands of ELCA congregations have participated in this opportunity and dedicated one day to serve communities in ways that share the love of God with all people. The date for 2017 is Sunday, Sept. 10. Mark your congregation’s calendar today! If your congregation cannot participate on Sept. 10, please consider an-other time that works best. This year we observe the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation. The ELCA’s anniversary theme, “Freed and Renewed in Christ,” reminds us of the gospel’s promise that we are freed in Christ to love and serve our neighbors. This is work that you do every day – serving your community in ways that share the love of God with all of God’s people. We are a church that rolls up our sleeves and gets to work. Whether your congregation prepares and delivers meals to people rendered homeless to thanking emergency responders, your service activities offer an opportunity for us to explore one of our most basic convictions as Lutherans: that all of life in Jesus Christ – every act of service, in every daily calling, in every corner of life – flows freely from a living, daring confidence in God’s grace.

Our Outreach Ministry has a new name: Community Service

Why? Because here at Emmanuel we are all about serving our community, whether it is local, state, country or the world, our hands are outstretched to serve with love.

To live harmoniously, we need to be supportive and helpful to all people, creatures, and plant life that share this earth with us. While "being of service" is part of being a good citizen of the world, it also feels good to help oth-ers. When we do something for others in service, without the expectation of anything in return, we are turning our actions into offerings. There are many ways to be of service to our community. There are the obvious and much needed volunteer op-portunities, such as serving Thanksgiving dinner at a shelter, mentoring our youth, or cleaning up a road. Then, there is the kind of service that we may not even think of as being acts of service. Learning a new language (perhaps sign language) so that you can talk to more people is a way to reach out to others. Inviting someone who isn't motivated enough to exercise on their own to join you on your daily walk is a way to give of yourself. Sharing flowers or vegetables from your garden, organizing a poetry reading, offering to babysit for a busy par-ent, or donating pet food to an animal shelter all are simple ways to offer your services to your community. There are many ways that you can serve the world. Imagine the impact we would have on the environment if we picked up one piece of trash off the street every day and chose not to drive our car once a week. Even gardening tactics such as throwing wildflower seeds onto a vacant lot can brighten the lives of others – including the lives of birds and insects. Every day, you can do something to make this world a better place. During prayer, ask for guid-ance on what you can do to be of service. This can be a wonderful way to start your day. Smiling at a stranger who looks down in the dumps or teaching your neighborhood kids how to whistle will impact someone's day or even their life. Giving of yourself is the best gift that you can give. ~Madisyn Taylor

ANNOUNCING EMMANUEL CHURCH SURVEY! The transition taskforce is inviting each confirmed member to complete the Church Survey tool from Holy Cow Con-sulting, a 30 minute online survey that will help Emmanuel gauge the strength, vitality, and trends in our church.
