Making Learning Our Number One Priority

Principal’s Message Schools are such a hive of activity that every day brings a range of diverse, exciting and engaging opportunities. This was especially apparent during our Education Week celebrations. Perhaps the highlight of the week was the opening of our East Hills Boys “Yarning Space” which was launch in the presence of our cultural elders, Education Director Warren Finn, former Principal Rod Brooks and East Hills Community of schools Principal’s. The ritual of the smoking ceremony was something that many of us had not witnessed and was especially engaging for the visiting Japanese boys. This area will hold a very special place for our Aboriginal students and the school community alike. Collaborative projects with East Hills Public School and a morning tea with nine “old boys” from the original graduating class of 1956 made the week especially meaningful to our students.

As part of our 2018-20 School Plan we have established process teams to drive the projects that have been developed by the staff and school leaders. Many professional development hours have allowed a collaborative approach to drive the school into its future directions. Our Executive conference held on Tuesday August 14th allowed school leaders to explore Scout, a platform to access staff and student data which is a vital foundation for the decisions we make. Future focused learning opportunities were presented

by colleagues and the day culminated in a NESA check list to ensure we are abreast of educational processes. I have included a brief overview of the school plan in this newsletter. The completion of the Year 12 Trial Examinations sees the culmination of the school’s formal assessment of students. However I encourage our students to continue through to their HSC exams with the same dedication to study and application to ensure they are fully prepare to achieve their most successful HSC results. As part of the community of East Hills Boys High we acknowledge the aesthetic learning environment of our school, consisting of extensive gardens and grounds, innovative learning spaces, exciting activities and a harmonious community of students from diverse culture. I would like to open our school and invite you to experience the day to day life of East Hills Boys High. Guided tours will be held during Term 4 on a fortnightly basis beginning on Wednesday 24th of October and then each second Wednesday. Mr Steven Suteski will greet you at the front foyer at 9 am for a brief look “inside the gates”. Thank you for entrusting the education of your sons into our hands and I can assure you their learning is our number one priority. Mrs Karen Savins

Deputy Principal Report East Hills Boys HS have had the privilege of hosting an Australian Study Tour from Japan recently. Our Year 9 boys paired up with our visitors from NANZAN Boys HS for two and a half weeks, taking them to their lessons, on offsite experiences and immersing the visitors in our culture and school. Many thanks to those Year 9 boys who were involved, they all went above and beyond and developed a great connection with our visitors. Also a huge thank you to Mr Vasilas for all his time spent with the boys. Mr Vasilas was the linchpin and the go to person whilst the boys were visiting. Our itinerary was packed this year, visiting Manly, Milson’s Point, walking over the Harbour Bridge, cooking damper, making and painting boomerangs and many other class activities. The boys were also involved in our Education Week activities and our visitors spent a day teaching our boys about Japanese culture. Mrs Jennifer Hazelton

Making Learning Our Number One Priority

Dear parents and caregivers, Welcome back! We hope all the boys had a restful break and are enjoying Term 3. Thank you to the families, EHBHS staff and Director of schools, Warren Finn for attended our last P&C meeting held on Monday 30th July. Your input is vital and support towards our school community is most appreciated. Our next meeting will be held on Monday 27th August at 6pm in the school Cafe. We look forward to seeing you there. If you are unable to join our monthly meetings, you can access the Minutes by visiting EHBHS website and selecting the following tabs: 1. Our School 2. Parents and Citizens Association (fourth option located on the left side of the page) One of the discussion points in our meeting was the $15,000 grant we applied for earlier this year through the Community Building Partnership Grant from NSW State Government (Glen Brooks) which both the P&C and school will match in order to purchase additional outdoor seating for the comfort of our boys. We will be notified in November/December this year whether or not the grant has been approved. Thank you to the wonderful P&C members, Susan and Frederika who took the time to apply for this much needed grant. During the meeting it was decided that we will begin purchasing some seats this term with our contribution (P&C $10,000 and EHBHS $4,973), and purchase the remaining seats with the grant funds if it is approved. We are very excited that our boys will have additional tables/chairs in the outdoor seating areas. If you have not had the chance to pay the 2018 P&C contribution, we kindly ask you to consider this payment as it will allow us to continue assisting EHBHS with various resources and needs for the students. Wishing you and your families a lovely and restful weekend! Kind Regards, 2018 P&C Office Bearers

Creative and Performing Arts VISUAL ARTS - LETS CREATE!!! Year 7 are beginning to delve in the world of Aboriginal art. They will be learning to use Adobe Photoshop and Printmaking. Year 8 have started exploring the built environment. Like Australian artist Jeffrey Smart they will learn how to incorporate perspective to create realistic observational drawings. Year 9 are smashing out some Surreal paintings!! They have been blowing each others minds with their different interpretations of what is and isn’t real. Year 10 have been looking at Street Art and considering is it “Art” or “Vandalism”? Through the exploration of well-known artists such as Banksy, they will begin creating several designs for Murals around the school. Year 11 are about to begin their last artwork for the Preliminary course. They have been granted the freedom to choose whatever medium they like and to explore any issue they feel is most important. We cannot wait to see some thought provoking and challenging works. Year 12 are finalising their Major Art Works. We are waiting in anticipation for their amazing final bodies of work.

Music – ROCK N ROLL… This term has seen the completion of our brand new music studio. Located in H block, the studio is an exciting new facility that will allow all students to take their music making/compositions to the next level, particularly those students who select music for study in senior years. The studio will allow students to get hands on in the music production process, either recording their own original songs or live performances for assessment. Whether a hobbyist or a future professional, hands on experience in a studio setting is crucial for any budding musician. This brilliant new facility provides our boys with the opportunity they need to develop the skills and tools they need to succeed as a musician in the 21st century. Music tuition begins again this term. Please see Mr Navan or Mr Prentice for more details.

Drama In term 2, the Year 9 drama students worked hard to create their own play scripts based on urban legends and horror stories. The creativity and imagination displayed were commendable. This term we are studying an Australian play ‘Skate’ written by Debra Oswald. The students are taking turns at being the director for each scene which is proving to a fun challenge.

Exciting NEWS and EVENTS Coming up very soon will be our MADE (Music, Art, Drama, Entertainment) exhibition night!!! Students work Year 7 – Year 12 will be on display. The highlight will be seeing the hard work of the current Year 12’s in the form of artworks, performances, and music pieces. This only comes every 2 years so you would be crazy to miss out.

Literacy/numeracy program

Letters have been sent to parents

of Year 7 students, regarding

their sons’ progress in the

Accelerated Reader program for

the year to date. Parents, please

continue to encourage your sons

to read for at least 20 minutes

each evening!

Year 8 students have just been handed their Literacy/numeracy handbooks, and

log-in instructions for Google Classroom online tutorials, which commenced in

Week 3 this Term, and continue weekly. Parents, please encourage your sons to

do this weekly work - it will take about an hour per week, and could make a real

difference!

Year 10 students have been

advised that the deadline for

nominating for Term 3 online

minimum-standards tests

(necessary for award of an

HSC) is Monday 13th August.

The tests will then be

conducted between Weeks 5-

8 of this Term. There will

only be one other

opportunity available this

year, in Term 4.

If parents have any queries about the above matters, please contact Mr Bawden (Literacy/numeracy Support, Thursdays/Fridays).

Attendance is recorded each day. As a parent or caregiver you are responsible for ensuring your child attends school every day, including sports days unless your child:

has an unavoidable medical or dental appointment (preferably these should be made after school or during holidays)

is required to attend a recognised religious holiday

is required to attend an exceptional or urgent family circumstance (such as attending a funeral)

is sick, or has an infectious illness.

Students need to attend school regularly to meet the course requirements of the Higher School Certificate.

If you are having difficulty getting your child to attend school regularly, you might like to talk to the school principal or the school counsellor.

If your child has to be absent from school for any reason, including arriving late or leaving early, please either tell your child's teacher or the administration assistant at our school, or explain the reason by phone, email, or written note as soon as possible and within seven days. The school uses automated SMS to inform parents of any unexplained absences or unexplained late arrivals. You can reply to this SMS with the reason for your son’s absence so our system can be updated accordingly. Please reply with a valid reason eg. – sick, religious holiday, etc. Replying with a “Yes” does not validate your son’s absence and further correspondence will be sent.

Have you

moved?

If you have recently changed your residential address, we require proof to update your son’s student details. A change of address form can be picked up from the Front Office to be completed and handed back with supporting documentation such as a copy of a rate’s notice, lease agreement or electricity account. Please contact the office if you have any queries 9773 7806.

As you know, East Hills Boys High School is focused on providing the best possible resources and technology to educate and prepare your child for the future. Payment of school fees is essential in helping provide these resources. Please pay fees before by end of term.

Attendance

School starts at 8.50am. Please be here before that time so as not to disturb other students learning. Again, to prevent disruption to students learning times, please try to make appointments out of school hours. We understand that with some specialist appointments choosing a time is not available. In those instances, please follow the schools early leaving policy.

Thank you

STUDENTS LEAVING SCHOOL EARLY

The procedure for taking students out of school during school hours is as follows:

Students need to bring a letter from the parent and take it to a Deputy Principal before Roll Call to

have Early Leave approved.

Students then bring the letter to the front office.

Students return to the front office at the time of leaving to sign out and collect an Early Leavers Slip.

Take your holidays when we do!

Parents, students and teachers are concerned when students fall behind in their studies because of long absences. Families who plan to travel are encouraged to travel during school holidays. Parents are reminded that they must seek permission from the Principal to take a student out of school during term time as attendance must be maintained at or above 85%. If you require to take your child out of school during term time, please make

an appointment to discuss your plans with the Principal or Deputy Principal

before booking flights or accommodation as you may be asked to cancel

them if this brings your child’s attendance under 85%. The Principal has information to assist families to

plan holidays that are least disruptive to their children’s schooling.

Just a reminder regarding your BYOD Permission notes should be returned to your Year Advisor when you

have organised your device to use at school.

TUESDAYS are a no device day as you will be attending sport.

Please remember to use your device responsibly.

It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to ensure your device is always in a secure

and damage free location.

Your device should come to school fully charged ready for your lessons

CHANGE OF POLICY

In 2016 EHBHS in conjunction with our P&C agreed to a one off $100 fee to ensure all books

and resources were returned in a satisfactory condition, which would be refunded when your

child leaves school. Due to the recent changes within the DEC all new students attending from

the 2018 academic school year will be charged a one off non-refundable Textbook Levy of

$100.00 which covers of borrowing Library, English & Maths books/resources. This fee will be

expected to be paid prior to students borrowing Library, English & Maths books/resources in

2018. Students attending prior to 2017 will still be eligible to the refund under the previous

system.

CHANGES TO OUR PAYMENT PROCESS

To provide a more efficient and secure payment system East Hills Boys High

School will implement an online payment system as at 17 February 2017, via a

secure payment page hosted by Westpac.

Payment can be made using either a Visa or MasterCard Credit card or debit

card, and can be made via computer, tablet or mobile phone.

The payment page is accessed from the front page of the schools website by

selecting the “$ MAKE A PAYMENT” icon. (see above)

Items that can be paid include school/subject contribution, excursions, sport,

creative and practical arts (ie band, drama or dance), miscellaneous sales to

students (ie calculator or printing etc). There is also a category called “Other”

this covers items not covered in the previous headings, Other can be used to

make a complete payment of a school invoice.

When you access the “$ MAKE A PAYMENT” icon you must enter:

The students name, class and reference number or

The students name and date of birth or

The Student Registration number and invoice number as listed on

statements sent periodically to families

THESE DETAILS ARE ENTERED EACH TIME YOU MAKE A PAYMENT AS

STUDENT INFORMATION IS NOT HELD WITHIN THE SECURE PAYMENT

SYSTEM

This is a secure payment system hosted by Westpac to ensure that your

credit/debit card details are captured in a secure manner, these details are not

passed back to the school.

You have the ability to check and change any details of the payment before the

payment is processed. Receipts can be emailed &/or printed immediately.

Receipt numbers should be recorded on Fees/Excursion/Statement note and

returned to school asap as we need a signed permission note for your child to

participate in school activities or receive resources. Westpac passes daily

payment details to the school, however no further receipt is given by the school.

The example to the left displays the payment details page. Once you select the

“NEXT” icon you are moved to a secure payment page to enter your private
