SEPTEMBER MOVIES — let’s go back to school…

SPOTLIGHT

Many thanks to Bradley & Son Funeral Homes, LLC for sponsoring

our summer entertainment package! Thursdays in September at 12:30pm 9/5… “Freedom Writers” 2007 drama—Hilary Swank, Patrick Dempsey. While her at-risk students are reading clas sics such as "The Diary of Anne Frank," a young teacher asks them to keep journals about their troubled lives -- hoping they can apply history's lessons to break the cycle of violence and despair. 124 min. “PG –13” 9/12…“Mr. Holland’s Opus” 1995 emotional drama—Richard Dreyfuss, Olympia Dukakis. In 1965, passionate musician Glenn Holland takes a day job as a high school music teacher, convinced it's just a small obstacle on the road to his true calling: writing a historic opus. As the decades roll by with the composition unwritten but genera tions of students inspired through his teaching, Holland must redefine his life's purpose. 143 min. “PG” 9/19…“Dead Poets Society” 1989 drama—Robin Williams, Ethan Hawke. Oscar nominee Robin Williams stars as John Keating, an unconventional teacher who inspires students through poetry. When the school fires him, his dev- astated students rally behind him, mindful of the ways he has changed their lives. 129 min. “PG” 9/26…“Educating Rita” 1983 romantic comedy—Michael Caine, Julie Walters. This warm and witty take on the Pygmalion story as Rita, a piquant hairdresser who's determined to better herself, takes a class at the local university. There she meets Dr. Frank Bryant, a boozy professor, who reluctantly becomes her tutor. 111min. “PG”

Friday Foreign Movie at 12:30pm 9/27…“Monsieur Lazhar” 2012 French Canadian drama. When an Algerian immigrant seeking asylum in Montreal takes a job replacing an elementary school teacher who has died suddenly, he finds that his own secret, tragic background enables him to help the children deal with their loss. 94 min. “PG—13”

All films shown with either subtitles or closed captions.

Meet Axlyn Sommer, one of the Center’s wonderful trustees. She’s been on our board for more than 9 years and has co-chaired two of our very popular and successful Garden Tour fundraisers. She was invited to become a trustee by her neighbor and fellow board member, Nancy Wellbrock-Kmiecik. Axlyn owns and operates T.M. Ward Coffee, a family-owned and run business since 1869 with locations in down-town Chatham, Newark, and Norwalk, CT. Three of her four children are involved in the business: one of her sons even works on the website and social media strategy from Sweden. What compelled Axlyn to join the board is that she believes very strongly in giving back to the community. For her, the Center “was a natural.” She has been inspired by its impact on the older adults she’s observed who have come here for years, seeing some who were tentative at first become em-powered and more confident over time. She attributes that to the Center “achieving the connection that we want for people,” and adds, “we want to do more of that” for older adults going forward. She enjoys being part of the board be-cause of the vibrant and diverse group of people who work very well together. She also appreciates that the board mem-bers are actively engaged in trying to do everything possible to make the Center even better and that the members are always offering up new ideas to help shape the Center’s future.

Fun Fact: Axlyn generously donates the raved-about coffee we serve here at the Center!
