Parkdale CHC Bulletin Parkdale CHC Bulletin Summer 2012 Women’s Connection Expansion at New Satellite Women’s Connection Expansion at New Satellite arkdale CHC has been providing dedicated counselling and sup- port services to women in Park- dale for many years through our Women’s Connection Program. As of July 1st, 2012, we have significantly enhanced and expanded our programs and services for women by assuming the responsibility and accountability for the programs and services previously provided at the Women’s Health Centre at St. Joseph’s Health Centre. The Women’s Health Cen- tre (now closed), which was in operation for 22 years, was well known for its client- centered approach and its responsiveness to the needs of multi-stressed, culturally and socioeconomically diverse popula- tions. On behalf of our clients, staff, Board of Directors and the entire community, Park- dale CHC would like to express our grati- tude to the staff of the Women’s Health Centre and St. Joe’s for the many years of excellent service to women in our commu- nity. As part of the transition process we consulted with and engaged staff, clients and community partners of the Women’s Health Centre programs so we know very well how well-regarded and treasured they were. Parkdale CHC is honoured to continue this legacy with our expanded Women’s Con- nection Program, and will continue to de- liver excellent care for women, addressing the social determinants of health, and us- ing therapeutic approaches that are grounded in feminist, anti-oppression prin- ciples and that are trauma-informed and resiliency focused. Our expanded programs and services for women are housed at our brand new (as of July 1st, 2012) satellite location in the Sunnyside Medical Arts Building at 27 Roncesvalles Avenue, located one block north of Queen Street West and Ronces- valles Avenue. Our expanded Women’s Connection Program provides free and confidential counselling for women who are 16 years of age and older, who are dealing with childhood and/or adult trauma, relationship violence, pre- and post-partum mood adjustments, trauma issues related to immigration, displace- ment or resettlement, parenting chal- lenges related to trauma and abuse. As with our other CHC programs it is our in- tention to prioritize women who face the greatest barriers to accessing services and to offer support in either individual or group formats. Also at our satellite location we are very pleased to sponsor the long-serving and very popular Parkdale Parents Primary Prevention Program, also known as the 5Ps. Funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada, the 5Ps program provides free programs for pregnant women, parents and families with young children from 0-6 years of age, residing in the Parkdale and High Park. Some of the very successful programs include: Prenatal Nutrition and Support, Mom and Baby Circle, Living and Learning with Baby, and Parent Relief. Starting Saturday September 29th, Super Dads, Super Kids, a program for fathers and their children, will run on Saturday mornings from 10 a.m.12 p.m. Childcare and light snacks will be provided. For more information or to register please call 416.537.8222, x.505 or email [email protected]. arkdale CHC is always recruiting new members. We encourage residents, clients, and community members who support the work of the Health Centre to apply. arkdale CHC is excited to be part of the Parkdale Food Network, a broad group of agencies which works together to facilitate ac-

cess to healthy, affordable food for all residents of Parkdale. A steering commit-tee meets regularly to coordinate and help direct the activities of three key working groups: Community Land Trust, Bulk-Buying, and South Parkdale Market. For more information, please contact Kuni Kamizaki: [email protected]. The opening of the West End Food Co-op’s doors is closer than ever! added products, and hosting our com-munity cannery

A grocery store focusing on fresh, local food

Owned by members and allow people to actively participate in changing our food system

A place to host workshops, events and programs focused on food secu-rity, and a means to provide accessi-ble local food, training, and education for the diverse communities in Park-dale

A place where eaters connect with local producers and farmer and where workers, eaters, producers, and com-munity partners can be empowered about food choices

arlier this year we asked our clients for their feed-back and they responded. More than 200 clients completed our client satisfaction survey and we wanted to share some highlights from the re-

sponses. Here is what our clients told us:

90% said their health and well-being is improved by the services they receive at PCHC

94% believe that PCHC has a positive impact on health of the community

74% said they can get an appointment when they need one

91% would refer a friend or family member to PCHC Many people also took the time to tell us what they appre-ciate most, as well as what they would like us to improve. Below are the most common responses: What our clients most appreciate:

Friendly, caring, professional and competent staff

PCHC’s responsiveness to community (e.g. Roma drop in, reaching out to LGBT community)

Large variety of services under one roof (e.g. dental, naturopathic clinic, harm reduction supplies)

Clean, well-kept facilities Areas for improvement:

Keep the elevator in good repair

Shorter wait times to get an appointment

Medical services for LGBTQ, especially trans, clients

More mental health and psychiatric care At Parkdale CHC, we are committed to providing our clients with the highest quality care and your feedback helps us to focus our efforts. As a result of this year’s survey results, our Quality Improvement Committee is working to improve access to appointments and reduce wait times. In addition, our staff teams are working to increase their knowledge and skills in addressing LGBTQ health concerns. Once again we would like to thank our clients for the time and energy you took to complete the survey and we look forward to hearing from you again next year. You can also provide feedback at any time via our website or by leaving a note in the suggestion boxes at the Centre. If you are at the Centre, please feel free to speak in person with any mem-ber of the management team.

his summer has been quite busy for Parkdale CHC’s Harm Reduction team. In May and June, community workshops on Hepatitis C Preven-

tion, HIV/AIDS Education, and Alcohol Use and Harm Reduction were held onsite. Over 80 Parkdale residents attended and engaged in conversations about life, substance use and community building strategies. In May, the Needle Exchange hosted Toronto Public Health’s Overdose and NARCAN Training, which provided overdose training to 16 com-

munity members. In June, a set of documen-tary films about Canadian harm reduction organizations and strategies was screened for Parkdale CHC staff in a weeklong lunch n’ learn series entitled Donuts and Docs. This series included the work of Gabor Mate and the Crack Users Project. In August, the Ex-change hosted a Naloxone workshop for Overdose Awareness Day. This fall, stay tuned for upcoming workshops on substance use and PTSD.
