HOSA Receives Two Awardsat the SOAR Banquet Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) received FAUʹsBoca Raton campus New Student Organization of the Yearaward, and FAUʹs Boca Raton campus Student OrganizationAdvisor of the Year award at the FAU Council of StudentOrganizations (COSO) Student Organization Awards andRecognition (SOAR) banquet on April 19.

ʺSince he spent two years teaching us to ʹdo for othersʹ and to becompassionate and empathetic to our patients, we thought themost fitting gift was a donation to a charity in his honor,ʺ saidM2 student, Janelle Nassim. The students donated more than$300 in honor of Dr. Jacomino to the UNICEF organization toprovide de‑wormer tablets, vaccines, micronutrient tablets,soccer balls, and anti‑malarial drugs, to children in need.

 STUDENT PRESENTS AT FIUʹs ANNUAL BIOMEDICALAND COMPARATIVE IMMUNOLOGY SYMPOSIUM Saba Tamjidi, a masterʹs degree student in Dr. Nouri‑Shiraziʹslaboratory, presentedher research entitledʺSelected TLR agonistsimprove the ability ofnicotine‑exposeddendritic cells togenerate effector T cells,ʺwhich was awardedʺOutstanding ScientificPoster Presentationsʺ atthe Florida InternationalUniversityʹs 2015 AnnualBiomedical andComparativeImmunologySymposium. The 17th annual symposium hosted more than 200participants over the course of two days from institutionsincluding the University of Pennsylvania, the University ofAlberta, and the University of Rochester.

 M1 STUDENTS INSPIRE 7TH GRADERS M1 students recently visited the 7th graders at Carver MiddleSchool in Delray Beach to host a nutrition session on April 16. ʺItwent really well and everyone had a blast,ʺ said M1, NehaHippalgaonkar. 

 Students were taught about GI anatomy and food groups andwere provided with a brochure at the end of the session to takehome to their families. Outreach activities such as these are avital part of our studentʹs medical education because they learnabout the importance of giving back to the community in whichthey practice.
