Inaugural Class Graduates On Friday, April 24, family, friends, faculty and dignitariesgathered as 53 members of the inaugural class received theirDoctor of Medicine (M.D.) degrees. ʺThis is a landmark momentfor Florida Atlantic University,ʺ said President John Kelly. ʺThisfirst graduating class will excel in their careers in medicine andprove noble ambassadors for the university and the Charles E.Schmidt College of Medicine.ʺ

A New Grant Aims to HelpYoung Medical ResearchersJump‑Start Their Careers The average age at whichAmerican medical researchersreceive their first major grantfrom the National Institutes ofHealth is frustratingly,persistently high. So threeleading philanthropic groups areattempting to step in andsupport young medicalresearchers early in their careers.The Howard Hughes MedicalInstitute, the Bill & MelindaGates Foundation, and theSimons Foundation announced a$150 million grant programdesigned to counter tight NIHbudgets. The new grant, to beknown as the Faculty Scholarscompetition, will provide five‑year nonrenewable awardsranging from $100,000 to$400,000 per year.

M1 STUDENTS INSPIRE 7TH GRADERS M1 students recently visited the 7th graders at Carver MiddleSchool in Delray Beach to host a nutrition session on April 16. ʺItwent really well and everyone had a blast,ʺ said M1, NehaHippalgaonkar.
Students were taught about GI anatomy and food groups andwere provided with a brochure at the end of the session to takehome to their families. Outreach activities such as these are avital part of our studentʹs medical education because they learnabout the importance of giving back to the community in whichthey practice.
