Fisherman Josh Chaplin, 22, headed down to cast a line on Tuesday but instead of a fish he caught an anti- aircraft gun turret and the rusted skeletons of two un- known vehicles. His mum, Sue Chaplin, who owns the Wagait Beach Supermarket, said locals knew of another gun turret and building nearby but had never seen this one. ‘‘There’s been a bit hap- pening in the last few weeks with the big tides,’’ she said. ‘‘It’s pretty exciting. It’s been here since the war.’’ Ms Chaplin posted the pic- ture on the Wagait Beach Supermarket FaceBook page where she said a visiting World War II veteran had pointed out where the turret would be hidden in the sand dunes back in 2012. He had returned to Dar- win for the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Darwin and returned to Wagait Beach searching for relics. Only one turret was vis- ible but he pointed out where the other would be. ‘‘Amazingly the turret has reappeared this week,’’ Ms Chaplin said. ‘‘Truly an amazing bit of history on show . . . until the sand and tide reclaim them all again.’’ Heritage consultant Mike Owen said after the first bombing of Darwin a cutting-edge radar system was set up all around Dar- win Harbour and the gun turret might be an anti- aircraft battery linked to it. ‘‘The most advanced unit in the world was put on the cliffs here,’’ he said. ‘‘There was an extensive anti-aircraft system linked to the radar and it could well be part of that. ‘‘The system around Dar- win was cutting edge and they knocked out a lot of Japanese aircraft. ‘‘There was something like 170 raids (after the in- itial bombing) in Darwin Harbour alone.’’ At Nightcliff beach, an- other old relic has shown up, which has generated a great deal of interest from Darwin- ians and abroad. The object, which re- sembled a pulley, was photo- graphed by Soph de la Rue on Tuesday. The general consensus among those who com- mented was that it was some sort of cart used during WWII or perhaps an old min- ing wagon.
