Renewable energy alternatives Direct solar energy This is the use of solar panels to collect sunrays for power. Wind powered turbines Used giant wind fans to generate power. Wood grain, harvest leftovers, grains - Turned into ethanol for fuel. Geothermal energy This is the use of energy from the Earths interior. Tidal energy Relies on the ebb and flow of the tides. Biomass energy This is where animal and plant materials are used as fuel.

Challenges of using renewable energy sources Cost of components required to build these systems is expensive. Locations to build large systems are not available. Distributors of ethanol are not readily available nationwide. The use of dams to create estuaries for tidal energy would disrupt the ecosystem. Geothermal energy can cause the emission of hydrogen sulfide. The water that is collected in warm water dams contains organisms that are

    hazardous to humans.

Non-renewable energy resources Definition: finite resources that will eventually dwindle, becoming too expensive or too environmentally damaging to retrieve. (2008, Wikipedia)

Fossil fuels :o Coal exists as a mined solid.o Petroleum is a liquid, and forms the basis for heating oil , diesel fuel, and

gasoline .o Natural gas is commonly also referred to just as gas. It is mostly methane ,

and most of the additional material is removed before use as a fuel. Nuclear energy fuel for fission is mined as Uranium ore, see Renewable

    energy#Nuclear power .

How we can help conserve energy

Turn off unsused electrical appliances and lighting Use solar power where possible electricity Purchase vehicles that use ethanol fuel Stop using coal fueled products Insulate, ventilate, control moisture and air seal homes

    Importance of conserving energy.

    Government efforts:

Department of energy has created a Biomass Program Multi-Year Program Plan, outlining the their strategy for research, development, and deployment of various biomasstechnologies through 2017. (2008, eeree.energy.gov)

In Hawaii an energy Bill to include a Solar Hot water requirement for all new homes was passed. (2008, eere.energy.gov)

Federal Energy Management Program has released guidelines to help federal agenciesmeet energy management and renewable energy requirements for complying with theEnergy Policy Act (EPAct) of 2005 and Executive Order 13423. (2007, eere.energy.gov)

There is an open solicitation for research and development in the areaof enhanced geothermal systems in the value of $90 million over fouryears, with initial funding estimated at $10 million for fiscal year 2008.

    (2008, eere.energy.gov)

EERE's Geothermal Technologies Program works in partnership withU.S. industry to establish geothermal energy as an economicallycompetitive contributor to the U.S. energy supply. (2008,eere.energy.gov)

Challenges of with managing Non-renewable energy sources: Coal, natural gas & oil. Prices of final product have become un-affordable. There is a greater demand than there are sources within the United States. Harvesting the product has caused environmental damage. There is a high risk of severe ecosystem damage if spilled into waterways. Harvesting of the product has caused severe medical problems amongst the

    workers in the industry.
