The video showed Kim make an appearance as a clock struck midnight. Dressed in a grey suit and tie, he waved to the crowd and accepted flowers from chil-dren while surrounded by mil-itary officials in Pyongyang’s recently renovated Kim Il Sung

Square.Kim said he hopes that North

and South Korea will join hands again after the coronavirus cri-sis is over.

While attendees at other holiday events were shown wearing masks, no one at the parade appeared to be wearing any masks.

Two more COVID-19 deaths TDT | Manama

Two more COVID-19 deaths in Bahrain yesterday raised

the total number of casualties in the Kingdom’s coronavirus battle to 273.

A 70-year-old Bahraini man and a 38-year-old expatriate man are the latest fatalities in the Kingdom.

Bahrain also continued to en-

hance its testing capability, with the authorities conducting 8,792 COVID-19 tests yesterday to de-tect 427 new cases.

This includes 133 expatriate workers, 282 contacts of active cases, and 12 travel-related cas-es.

Health Ministry also recorded 402 new recoveries yesterday, bringing the total number of people cured of their infections

in the Kingdom to 70,808. There are currently 113 COVID-19 pa-tients in the Kingdom receiving treatment, of which 58 are in a critical condition.

The number of active virus patients reached 4,206 out of which 4,148 are stable.

The sixth edition of the Manama Entre-preneurship Week (MEW) which will go live next week (October 19) opens

to a radically different world. The year 2020 made us change our thinking and our pattern of work and life. Many traditional doors have closed and several windows have opened. ‘Work From Home’ has become a new way of work and life. Just this week, Microsoft cre-ated a professional commotion by announc-ing that its employees will all be allowed to work permanently from home even after the pandemic.

All this means that new opportunities will open up for entrepreneurs and much of the 21st-century work patterns shall be based on how well we adapt to digital technolo-gy. Quite correctly, would-be entrepre-neurs attending the MEW will be able to access talks and work-shops that will teach them just how to navi-gate the fast-changing workplace world.

It is heartening to see that Bahrain au-thorities are not sit-ting quietly because of the pandemic and are actually aggres-sively promoting new business perspectives and ways to work. This period of lull in activities is the time that we must all re-group and draw up a new blueprint for 2021.

According to esti-mates from McKinsey & Company, the mini-mum economic value that has been vapor-ized by the pandemic is somewhere in the range of $9 trillion. Against such a disas-trous backdrop, the need of the hour is courageous innova-tion across all busi-ness sectors. Entre-preneurs are espe-cially well placed to manage change be-cause they are at the start of the trajectory. But we need to create an eco-system that can give them the encouragement to move swiftly with the times and events such as the MEW are great platforms to promote networking and inno-vation.

When we talk of entrepreneurship, the topic sticks immediately to financing. But this year has taught us that start-ups need a fresh approach and a willingness to innovate much more than money. To all the entrepreneurs who will attend the MEW, I urge you to take advantage of Bahrain’s great business environ-ment and adapt to the new season of success.

It is heartening to see that Bahrain authorities are not sitting quietly because of the pandemic and are actually aggressively promoting new business perspectives and ways to work. This period of lull in activities is the time that we must all regroup and draw up a new blueprint for 2021.

China to invest nearly $900 billion in power grids: state mediaReuters | Beijing

China will invest close to $900 billion in the next

five years to help further de-velop the country’s power grids, the official Xinhua News Agency reported yesterday.

Investments in power grids and related industries are expected to exceed 6 trillion yuan ($896 billion) in 2021-

2025, Xinhua reported, citing Mao Weiming, chairman of the State Grid Corp of China, the country’s biggest power utility.

The investments will cen-tre on areas such as ultra high voltage power transmission, electric vehicle chargers and new digital infrastructure, Mao said.

India’s top bank appeals for NPA classification• India last week waived compound interest on loans

• RBI says ban on loan classification will harm finance system

• The court is set to rule on the matter on Tuesday

Reuters | Mumbai

The Reserve Bank of In-dia has appealed to the country’s top court to let

banks classify loans as nonper-forming, saying a ban imposed to help borrowers in the COV-ID-19 pandemic could greatly harm the nation’s financial sys-tem.

The central bank, in a filing to the Supreme Court late on Friday, warned that failure to immediately lift an interim stay on banks classifying any loan as a non-performing asset (NPA) would also undermine the cen-tral bank’s regulatory mandate.

The court granted the stay last month, responding to a plea filed by an Indian optician, later joined by a wide range of bor-rowers whose income or rev-enue was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The court is set to rule on the matter on Tuesday. The ruling

could have far-reaching conse-quences not only for millions of borrowers, but also for banks and the country, as state-run banks dominate the sector.

To help borrowers weather pandemic-related stress, the RBI has let banks offer a moratorium on loan payments for up to six months and permitted a one-time restructuring of accounts.

The RBI’s measures ensured that accounts that were stand-ard prior to the implementation

of the nationwide lockdown in late March, would not be clas-sified as NPAs if the borrowers made use of the moratorium, which allowed repayments to be delayed until the end of August but with the loans continuing to accrue interest.

The central bank’s appeal fol-lowed a request by the court for further details from the RBI and government on their plans to help the borrowers.

The RBI responded by detail-ing the wide range of measures it has put in place to address stress in various sectors. It warned against any further lee-way.

“Every regulatory forbear-ance has its trade-offs in terms of adverse incentives and un-intended consequences,” the RBI said. “All the issues that were advanced by the petition-

ers have been adequately ad-dressed.”

The optician and other bor-rowers had demanded the waiv-er of what they call “interest on interest,” charged by lenders to those who used the mora-torium.

The government told the court last week it would waive the compound interest on loans up to 20 million rupees ($270,000) under a separate COVID-19 support plan, in a move that will bring relief to millions of borrowers.

In a separate affidavit on Friday, the government told the court that it would not be possible to further supplement the already announced relief packages. It asked the court not to permit any further judicial review by the petitioners.

Malaysia Airlines boss says will have to shut down if restructuring plan fails• A group of leasing companies has rejected the restructuring plan

• Izham said Plan B could involve shifting Malaysia Airlines’ air operator’s certificate (AOC) to a new airline under a different name

Reuters | Kuala Lumpur

Malaysia Airlines will have to shut down if its lessors

decide not to back its latest re-structuring plan, the chief ex-ecutive of the airline’s parent group was quoted as saying on Saturday.

A group of leasing companies has rejected the restructuring plan, bringing the state carri-er closer to a showdown over its future, Reuters reported on Friday.

Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) chief executive officer Izham Ismail said the group would have “no choice but to shut it down” if lessors decide against backing the restructur-ing plan.

“There are creditors who have agreed already. There are others still resisting, and anoth-er group still 50:50,” Izham said in an interview with The Edge

weekly.“I need to get the 50:50 ones

(on board) with those who have agreed. I understand quite a sizeable amount of creditors have agreed.”

Izham said the plan was to restructure the airline’s balance

sheet over five years, achieving break-even in 2023 on the as-sumption that demand in the domestic and Southeast Asian markets returns to 2019 levels by the second and third quarters of 2022.

The plan will also require a fresh cash injection from the airline’s shareholder, state fund Khazanah Nasional, to help the company over the next 18 months.

MAG declined to comment.Lessors claiming to represent

70 per cent of the airplanes and engines leased to the airline group have called the plan “in-appropriate and fatally flawed” and pledged to challenge it, ac-cording to people familiar with

the matter and a letter from a London law firm seen by Reu-ters.

MAG had earlier warned les-sors that Khazanah would stop funding the group and force it into a winding down process if the restructuring plans fail.

Izham said the lessors would need to make a decision by Oct. 11, so the airline can decide whether to proceed with its restructuring plan or “execute Plan B”.

Izham said Plan B could in-volve shifting Malaysia Airlines’ air operator’s certificate (AOC) to a new airline under a differ-ent name, or leveraging on the AOCs of sister airlines Firefly and MASwings.

China central bank to cut foreign exchange risk reserve ratio

Reuters | Beijing

China’s central bank said it will lower the reserve

requirement ratio for financial institutions when conducting some foreign exchange for-wards trading to zero with ef-fect from Monday.

Under current rules, finan-cial institutions must set aside 20% of the previous month’s yuan forwards settlement amount as foreign exchange

risk reserves.“The People’s Bank of China

(PBOC) will continue to main-tain flexibility in the exchange rate, stabilize market expecta-tions, and keep the yuan basi-cally stable at reasonable and balanced levels,” the central bank said on its website.

The move came after the onshore spot yuan rate ended at a 17-month high on Friday against the dollar, its biggest one-day percentage gain since 2005.

UK will explore every avenue for EU deal, PM Johnson tells France’s MacronReuters | London

Britain will explore every avenue for a trade deal

with the European Union but progress to bridge significant gaps needs to be made in the coming days, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson told French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday.

Johnson has set a deadline of the Oct. 15 EU summit for agreement on a deal, and the EU is seeking a few more con-cessions before entering the final phase of negotiations.

“(Johnson) confirmed the UK’s commitment to explor-ing every avenue to reach an agreement,” Johnson’s Down-ing Street office said in a read-out of the call.

“The Prime Minister em-phasised that progress must be made in the coming days to bridge the significant gaps, notably in the areas of fisher-ies and the level playing field, through the process of inten-sive talks between Chief Ne-gotiators.”

The two chief negotiators, the EU’s Michel Barnier and Britain’s David Frost, say they are inching towards a deal ahead of the Oct. 15 deadline, though they have underscored

that important gaps remain.Johnson told Macron that

Britain wanted a deal, but not at any price.

“He underlined that a deal was better for both sides, but also that the UK was prepared to end the transition peri-od on Australia-style terms if an agreement could not be found,” Johnson’s office said.

Teen one step from becoming first millennial saintAFP | Vatican City

A British-born Italian teen-ager who dedicated his

short life to spreading the faith online and helping the poor was beatified by the Catholic Church yesterday.

That leaves him just one miracle away from becoming the world’s first millennial saint.

Internet and computer-mad youngster Carlo Acutis, who died of leukaemia in 2006 aged 15, was placed on the path to sainthood after the Vatican ruled he had miraculously saved another boy’s life.

The Vatican claims he inter-

ceded from heaven in 2013 to cure a Brazilian boy suffering from a rare pancreatic disease.

He was beatified in Assi-si, the home of his idol Saint Francis, who dedicated his life to the poor. Some 3,000 people are expected to follow the cer-emony on giant screens set up in five squares in the central Italian city.

Acutis, dubbed “the cyber-apostle of the Eucharist”, was born in London to Italian par-ents, and moved to Milan with them as a young boy.

“He was considered a com-puter genius... But what did he do? He didn’t use these media to chat, have fun,” his mother Antonia Salzano said in an in-terview with Vatican News.

Instead, “his zeal for the Lord” drove him to make a website on miracles, she said.

(Acutis) saw that many young people,

Climate activist Greta Thunberg shows support for Biden in rare political tweetReuters | Washington

Teen climate-change fighter Greta Thunberg yesterday

showed support for Democrat Joe Biden, urging voters con-cerned about the environment to make their voices heard in the US presidential election.

The Swedish 17-year-old said

in a tweet that she never engag-es in party politics, but that “the up-coming US elections is above and beyond all that”.

“From a climate perspective it’s very far from enough and many of you of course sup-ported other candidates. But, I mean…you know…damn! Just get organized and get

everyone to vote #Biden,” she wrote.

Thunberg, who sparked a global climate protest move-ment after striking outside the Swedish par-liament in 2018, could encourage participation among younger voters who are typically less likely to vote than older Americans.

Celebrities lead TED global call to act on climate crisis AFP | Washington

The Pope and Prince William joined activ-

ists, artists, celebrities and politicians yesterday at a free streamed TED event aimed at unifying people to confront the climate crisis.

The Countdown program kicked off on the TED chan-nel at YouTube starting at 8 am (1500 GMT) in California and featured 50 speakers, the pontiff and the second-in-line to the British throne among them.

“You’ll be hearing from all different kinds of folks from all walks of life; from the front lines to the grass-roots to the treetops,” actor Mark Ruffalo, who is among the Countdown hosts, said during a briefing ahead of the event.

“They’ll be talking a little bit about the problems and a lot about the solutions.”

Countdown lasted about five hours, for the first time providing a free look at the blend of arts, ideas, innova-tion and enlightenment that are trademarks of prestig-ious TED conferences.

Organizers cancel Oct 15 US presidential debateDonald Trump refused to participate in what was supposed to be the second of three debates with Joe Biden

• Trump and Biden will have one final showdown on October 22

Reuters | Washington

The Commission on Pres-idential Debates said it has cancelled next week’s

showdown between Donald Trump and his challenger Joe Biden, after the president said he would not participate in a virtual format.

“Each (candidate) now has announced alternate plans for that date,” the commission said in a statement, adding “it is now apparent there will be no debate on October 15.”

The move leaves just one more debate on the schedule -- October 22 in Nashville, Ten-nessee -- before the November 3 election.

Debates have been a feature of every US presidential election since 1976, with three debates

near the end of a campaign the standard since 2000.

The commission had an-nounced Thursday it was con-verting the October 15 town hall debate to a virtual affair out of an abundance of caution be-cause Trump had tested positive for the corona-virus.

But the president, who has been eager to return to the cam-

paign trail and hold live events, re-fused to participate in the virtual format and sought un-successfully to return it to an in-person de-bate.

Biden had said earlier this week he would not debate Trump in person if he still had the virus, and his campaign called Trump’s refusal to adapt to a virtual format “shameful.”

“It’s shameful that Donald Trump ducked the only debate in which the voters get to ask the ques-tions -- but it’s no sur-prise,” Biden spokesman An-drew Bates said.

Trump “doesn’t have the guts to answer for his record to vot-ers at the same time as vice pres-ident Biden.”

The US president meanwhile plans to hold his first live event at the White House since being diag-nosed with Covid-19.

Two dead as forest fires burn in Syria, Lebanon• Dozens of fires were burning in Syria including 45 in Latakia and 33 in Tartus

• In neighbouring Lebanon, there have been more than 100 fires across the country

AFP | Damascus

Forest fires in Syria and neighbouring Lebanon have

killed two people and burned swathes of land since Thursday, state media and officials said.

Syrian state television on Sat-urday morning broadcast scenes from the affected areas, where fire-fighters were working to extinguish the blazes.

It said hundreds of hectares had burned in the countryside of Syria’s coastal Latakia and Tartus provinces, and in the central Homs province.

The health ministry said two people died in Latakia province on Friday as a result of the fires, and that 70 people in the area were taken to hospital suffering breathing difficulties.

Dozens of fires were burning, including “45 in Latakia and 33 in Tartus”, Syria’s Agriculture Minister Mohammed Hassan

Qatana told a radio station on Friday.

The Latakia fire brigade said they were “facing the largest series of fires seen in Latakia province in years”.

Official news agency SANA said fire burned homes in Ban-ias, in Tartus province.

In neighbouring Lebanon, there have been more than 100 fires across the country since Thursday, according to George Abu Musa, head of operations for the country’s civil defence.

“The situation is crazy, there are fires everywhere,” Abu Musa told AFP.

“We have mobilised 80 per-

cent of our personnel and al-most all our centres in Leba-non,” he said.

He said most of the blazes had been extinguished but some were still burning in the moun-tainous Chouf region in the south, and in Akkar in the north.

Military helicopters were as-sisting firefighters in “hard-to-reach” areas, he added.

Abu Musa was unable to iden-tify the cause of the blazes, but said wind and high tempera-tures were helping them spread.

On Friday, authorities report-ed several fires across northern and central Israel and the occu-pied West Bank as temperatures

soared, forcing thousands to evacuate.

Dozens of fires hit Lebanon in mid-October last year, amid unusually high temperatures and strong winds.

The government faced heavy criticism and accusations of ill-preparedness over its re-sponse to the 2019 blazes.

Days after Lebanon’s 2019 fires, mass protests broke out, triggered by proposed tax hikes but quickly transforming into months-long demonstrations against the ruling class, deemed by pro-testers as inept and cor-rupt.

Syria too saw blazes in La-takia, Tartus and Homs in mid-October last year, state me-dia reported at the time.

Delta inflicts new round of destruction in LouisianaStorm hit as a category 2 hurricane, making landfall about 15 miles from where Laura struck in August

• The storm brought local flooding of streets and riverbanks

AFP | Lake Charles

Coastal Louisianans yester-day surveyed the damage

left by the wind and water that Hurricane Delta raked across their already storm-battered homes even as it weakened quickly after coming ashore and moved rapidly toward the northeast.

Hundreds of thousands of res-idents were left without pow-er after Delta made landfall as a Catego-ry 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 100 miles per hour (161 kph) on Friday near the town of Creole.

By yesterday morning, how-ever, Delta barely ranked as tropical storm with winds down to 40 miles per hour (65 kph), although it continued bring-ing heavy rains to northeastern Louisiana, Arkansas and Mis-sissippi, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported.

The storm brought local flooding of streets and river-banks after closely tracking the path of de-struction left by more powerful Hurricane Lau-ra, which came ashore in late August with 150-mph (241-kph) winds.

“Though Delta may have been a ‘weaker’ storm than Laura, Delta has been more of a wa-

ter event than a wind event,” Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter wrote on Facebook yesterday.

With his entire city without power, Hunter urged residents who had evacuated to stay away for at least another day.

Laura damaged tens of thou-sands of homes, leaving roofs across the region dotted with protective blue tarpaulins and more than 6,000 people living temporarily in hotels.

Delta spared many of the rooftop tarps that were still up, but it flooded some streets and littered others with downed trees and branches street.

“Laura was much worse,” said Lake Charles resident Matthew Williams, 49. “This was more rain than wind.”

Williams, who had just got-ten his power back about a

week and a half ago after the outage left by Laura, said he rode out the storm at his home which escaped damage in both storms.

By mid-morning yesterday, some 575,000 customers across Louisiana were without pow-er, down from nearly 600,000, according to PowerOutage.US, which tracks disruptions across the United States.

Sylvia Pastrano said she had to position three trash cans over her bed to catch the water leaking through her roof that was already damaged by Laura.

“Last night, it was terrifying, the whistling and whistling,” said Pastrano, 65.

No deaths were immediately reported, but authorities cau-tioned that many storm-related fatali-ties occur from acciden-

tal falls during cleanup or from carbon monoxide poisoning from improper use of home generators.

“With power outages across the state, it ’s important for everyone using portable gen-erators to do so safely,” Gover-nor John Bel Edwards said on Twitter.

As Delta made its way over the Gulf of Mexico on Friday, energy companies cut back US oil pro-duction by about 92%, or 1.7 million barrels per day, the most since 2005, when Hurricane Katrina destroyed more than 100 offshore plat-forms and hobbled output for months.

The storm was expected to weaken further to a tropical depression later yesterday and continue bringing rain though Tennessee, Kentucky and the Ohio River Valley through early next week.

Delta was the 10th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season to make a US landfall this year, eclipsing a record dat-ing to 1916.

Serbia tests Chinese drones, Russian jets at major exercise

AFP | Pester, Serbia

Russian-made jet fighters, helicopter gunships and

tanks fired at ground targets while Chinese combat drones flew overhead yesterday at the desolate Pester training ground in Serbia’s western-most region in a show of re-vamped military power.

The training drill, dubbed Cooperation 2020 and attend-ed by President Aleksandar Vucic and other dignitaries, underlined Serbia’s close mili-tary ties with Beijing and Mos-cow.

In recent years, Belgrade has accelerated defence spending as it seeks dominance in the Western Balkans.

Its military budget rose to around $1.14 billion in 2020 and 2019 - 43% more than in 2018. This year’s military spending represented about 2.4 percent of gross domestic product.

“We are strengthening our army to deter any aggressor, we have no intention to wage any ... con-flicts,” Vucic told reporters after the exercise.

For the first time, Serbia demonstrated the use of CH-92A combat drones, the first such deploy-ment of Chinese unmanned aerial vehicles in

Europe. It received six such drones in June.

Beijing sees Serbia as part of its Belt and Road Initiative, aimed at opening new foreign trade links for Chinese compa-nies that have invested billions of euros, mainly in soft loans for infrastructure and energy projects.

For yesterday’s exercise, the Serbian military deployed over 40 aircraft, around 150 vehicles includ-ing tanks and armoured personnel carriers, and some 2,800 troops.

The Serbian military is loosely based on former Soviet technology and in recent years Belgrade has procured MiG-29 fighter jets and other weap-ons from Russia, including the Mi-35 helicopter gun-ships and Pantsir air defence system shown yesterday.

China’s Xi says intends to deepen relations with North Korea

AFP | Seoul

In a congratulatory message to Kim Jong Un for the

founding anniversary of North Korea’s ruling party, Chinese President Xi Jinping said he intends to deepen relations with Pyongyang, North Korean state media reported.

“We have an intent to suc-cessfully defend, consolidate and develop the China-Korea relations to-gether with Ko-rean comrades and propel the long-lasting and stable devel-opment of the socialist cause of the two countries,” North Ko-rean state news agency KCNA quoted Xi as saying.

Xi said he was “greatly pleased” with the achieve-ments that North Korea had made in recent years by en-

gaging with foreign countries in the face of hardships and challenges, KCNA reported.

After years of cool relations during which China joined the United States and other na-tions in im-posing sanctions on North Korea over its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programmes, Xi and Kim met five times in 2018 and 2019. The North Korean diplomatic offensive included Kim meet-ing with US President Donald Trump.

While North Korea says it has had no confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus, strict border clo-sures and other measures it imposed to pre-vent an outbreak have further strained its economy, which is heavily reliant on trade with China.

Bang Showbiz| Los Angeles

Miley Cyrus started her In-stagram show in order to connect with her fans

amid the coronavirus lockdown. The 27-year-old pop star decided

to reach out to her fans during the lockdown through her ‘Bright Minded’ series, thereby keeping them up to date

with her day-to-day life.

M i l e y s h a re d : “ I

still want-ed to stay

connect-ed with

my fans – it

gave me the structure and the stability we all need. But every day my fans would

ask, ‘Where’s the music?’ and I had no excuse – I couldn’t say I was busy with lots going on!”

The lockdown gave Miley the chance to reflect on her life and to write new material based on her recent experi-ences.

The pop star - who divorced Liam Hemsworth earlier this year - told ‘The Graham Nor-ton Show’: “It gave me time to write and reflect – nor-mally I write about what is happening, but I started writ ing about what had

happened – it was a very reflective

period.”

Chris Evans blasts Donald Trump after confusing statement about coronavirus

Huffpost | Los Angeles

Chris Evans has hit out at Don-

ald Trump, follow-ing the president’s latest, rather con-fusing, statement about coronavi-rus.

The Marvel star has been one of Trump’s most vocal celebrity critics in recent

times, particularly in the wake of the

US leader’s remarks about the Covid-19

pandemic, following his own diagnosis. On Thursday, the PO-

TUS shared what was poten-tially his most confusing state-

ment about the virus to date in a Twitter video, in which he was heard

saying: “We’re taking care of our seniors. You’re not vulnerable but they like to

say you’re vulnerable. You’re the least vulnerable but for this one thing, you are vulnerable. So am I.”

And evidently we weren’t the only ones left scratching our heads, with the Captain America star coming for Trump on Twitter.

“His brain is a scribble,” he wrote, in the early hours of Friday morn-ing, alongside a clip of Trump’s bewildering video.

Chris was similarly crit-ical of Trump earlier in the week, when he urged Americans not to be “afraid” of Covid.

“Don’t be afraid of Cov-id?!” Chris questioned. “You’ve been under round-the-clock care by the best doctors using the best drugs. Do you really think everyone has access to that?!

“Sadly, I’m sure you’re aware of that disparity, you just don’t care This is reckless to a shocking degree, even for

you.”He previously retweeted a mes-

sage from a doctor blasting the president after he was taken on a drive-by to greet supporters outside of the hospital where he

was being treated, days after his coronavirus di-

agnosis.“Every sin-

gle person in the vehicle

d u r i n g that com-p l e t e l y unneces-

sary Presi-dential ‘drive-

The 50-year-old artist then shared that her 9-year-old son, Moroccan, whom she calls Rocky, recently experienced racism.

“Rocky just got bullied the other day by a white suprem-acist person that he thought was his friend,” Carey re-vealed and called it “insane” that “this is the world we live in.”

In the same interview, the singer admitted that it was a “struggle” for her being bira-cial. Carey’s mother is of Irish descent and her father was from an African-American and Afro-Venezuelan lineage. She said the “only reason she was aware so early on that “there was such a thing as race” was because “it became a subject of humiliation” for her when she was a child.

“I got something I rarely get these days, which is good news, so if you wouldn’t mind sharing with our audience I think they’d be thrilled to find out something extraordinary that nobody knows up until this moment,” Colbert said during the vir-tual interview.

“Yes, I’m telling it for the first time now. It feels so strange,” Kaling replied. “But I gave birth to a baby boy on 3 September.”

Colbert remarked how “no one even knew” that she was expecting, to which Kaling said: ”I know! I know! This is news to a lot of people. It’s true.“

Kaling already has a two-year-old daugh-

ter, named Katherine. The comedy writer has never shared a picture of her daughter’s face or the identity of the child’s biological father, saying it was important to maintain some privacy.

Explaining her decision during an inter-view with the New York Times in 2019, Ka-ling said: “My feeling is that, until I speak to my daughter about that, I’m not going to talk to anyone else about it.”

However, she has revealed her former The Office co-star BJ Novak is Kather-ine’s godfather.

“The truth is that BJ is so much more like family now than a platonic friend,” Kaling told Good Housekeeping.

“He’s the godfather to my daughter, he comes over like once a week. Sometimes he’ll come over just to hang out with her.”

Gwen Stefani: ‘Everyone thinks Blake Shelton and I are married’Cover Media | Los Angeles

Gwen Stefani finds it “pretty cute” when people mistak-

enly refer to herself and Blake Shelton as a married couple.

The singers have been dating since 2015 and have yet to be-come engaged or wed - but that doesn’t stop people confusing the pair as husband and wife.

In a recent interview with Dua Lipa, who was a guest host

on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in August, the Physical hitmaker asked Gwen about life in lockdown at her “husband” Shelton’s Oklaho-ma ranch.

“Well, he’s not my husband, but that sounded cool when you said it,” she insisted at the

time - and speaking with US TV show Extra, the former No Doubt star once again addressed the topic.

“Do you know how many people say my ‘husband’ about him,” she smiled, adding: “I guess we’re just together... people got used to it or something like

that, but it’s pretty cute.”She did, however, clarify “he’s

not” her husband and the cou-ple is yet to make plans to tie the knot.

The Happy Anywhere hit-makers recently moved into their new Los Angeles home together, along with her three sons - Kingston, 14, Zuma, 12, and Apollo, six - who she shares with ex-husband, Gavin Ross-dale.

Firmino brace helps Brazil hammer Bolivia in WC qualifier

AFP | Brazilia

Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino scored a brace as

Brazil romped to a 5-0 victory over Bolivia in their opening 2022 World Cup qualifier.

B a r c e l o n a p l a y m a k e r Philippe Coutinho and Par-is Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos also got on the scoresheet while star forward Neymar set up two goals in a totally one-sided encoun-ter that sent Brazil top of the South American qualifying table.

In a Corinthians Arena de-serted due to Covid-19 restric-tions, Bolivia showed almost no ambition as Brazil dominat-ed throughout, with PSG’s Ney-mar starting after overcoming a back problem.

Inside the first minute, winger Everton volleyed wide from inside the six-yard box and three minutes later his cross was headed off-target by Marquinhos from a similar position.

Bolivia couldn’t get out of their half, or on the ball, as Coutinho and Everton created

a slew of chances down Bra-zil’s left.

The pressure told on 16 min-utes as Marquinhos headed home from an identical posi-tion to his ear-lier chance as full-back Danilo swung over a cross from the right following a short corner.

Even a first half downpour couldn’t dampen Brazil’s thrust as Coutinho forced a diving one-handed save from goalkeeper Carlos Lampe with a deflected shot.

Swiatek writes history with French Open triumphIga Swiatek demolishes Sofia Kenin in final to become the First Pole to win a grand slam title

• 19-year-old is youngest Paris winner since Monica Seles in 1992

AFP | Paris

Polish teenager Iga Swiatek won her country’s first Grand Slam singles title

yesterday as she defeated Amer-ican fourth seed Sofia Kenin 6-4, 6-1 to become the youngest women’s French Open champi-on since 1992.

The 19-year-old Swiatek, at 54 the lowest-ranked woman to capture the Roland Garros title in the modern era, is the ninth first-time major champion in the past 14 Grand Slams.

“It had to be that another un-derdog won a Grand Slam in women’s tennis. It is so often right now that it is crazy,” said Swiatek, who captured her first tour title in the process.

“I don’t know what’s going on. It’s overwhelming for me, it’s crazy.

“Two years ago I won a junior Grand Slam (at Wimbledon) and now I’m here. It feels like such a short time.”

Swiatek is the youngest wom-en’s French Open winner since Monica Seles lifted the trophy as an 18-year-old in 1992. She is

the first teenage champion since Iva Majoli in 1997.

“It’s crazy for me because I watched Rafael Nadal lift the trophy every year and now I’m in the same place,” added Swi-atek, the first woman to secure the title without losing a set since Justine Henin in 2007.

Swiatek also became just the second unseeded women’s Ro-land Garros champion in the Open era, joining Jelena Ostap-enko who claimed a shock title three years ago.

She eclipsed the run of com-patriot Jadwiga Jedrzejowska -- the most outstanding Polish player of the interwar period -- who finished runner-up at Roland Garros in 1939.

Swiatek was only the second

Polish woman to reach a Grand Slam final in the Open era af-ter Ag-nieszka Radwanska at Wimbledon in 2012. She had never previously been beyond the last 16.

Australian Open champion Kenin, 21, fell short in her at-tempt to become the first wom-an to cap-ture two Slams in the same year since Angelique Ker-ber in 2016.

“I just want to congratulate Iga on a great tournament and a great match. You played really well,” said Kenin.

Swiatek rises to the challengeSwiatek, whose only previous

tour-level final came at Lugano last year, dispelled any initial fear of nerves as she won 12 of

the first 15 points to surge 3-0 ahead.

However, Kenin has made a habit of fighting through tough situations in Paris and broke back when Swiatek served an untimely double fault allowing the American to level at 3-all.

Swiatek, who bludgeoned her way into the championship match, conceding just 23 games in six rounds, secured a precious hold before Kenin lost her serve for the second time.

Serving for the first set at 5-3, Swiatek dumped a tame back-hand into the net on set point and Ken-in immediately broke back, ripping a blistering back-hand return.

Kenin’s resilience has been a staple of her success but she cracked again to present Swi-atek with two more set points at 4-5, promptly dragging a back-hand wide to hand the Pole the opening set.

Djokovic resists gallant Tsitsipas to set up Nadal finalAFP | Paris

Top seed Novak Djokovic re-sisted a valiant and inspired

fightback from Stefanos Tsit-sipas to set up a French Open final showdown with old rival Rafael Nadal on Friday, winning a near four-hour battle 6-3 6-2 5-7 4-6 6-1.

Showing no sign of the phys-ical problems that troubled him during his previous match, Djokovic was initially dominant and poised for a routine win when he had a match point at 5-4 in the third set.

But he had not counted on fifth seed Tsitsipas’s incredible spirit as the 22-year-old fought his way back into contention with some dazzling shot-mak-ing.

Tsitsipas stole the third set as Djokovic faltered then staved off countless break points in the fourth before dragging the match into an unlikely decider.

His dream of becoming the first Greek player to reach a Grand Slam final faded away as Djokovic calmly re-asserted his authority against a physical-ly-struggling opponent.

Djokovic sealed victory with a forehand winner, nearly two hours after his first match point.

The Serb advanced to his 27th Grand Slam final where he will meet Nadal for the ninth time in a Grand Slam final and 56th time in total.

Victory would earn him an 18th Grand Slam title while Na-dal can match Roger Federer’s

record haul of 20.While Djokovic, who had lost

five of his nine previous French Open semi-finals, was given a fright it always looked as though his vast experience would prove decisive.

“We have to congratulate Stefanos for this great battle,” Djokovic, whose sole French title came in 2016, said on Court Philippe Chatrier.

“I was calm on the surface but inside it was something to-tally different. I thought that after losing the third set, and the fourth, I was still in control.”

Looking ahead to Sunday’s fi-nal against 12-time French Open winner Nadal, he said: “It’s may-be the biggest challenge in our sport to play Nadal at Roland Garros. I look forward to it, I’m happy to be here and motivated

to win.”Tsitsipas, contesting his sec-

ond Grand Slam semi-final, be-gan by squandering three break points in Djokovic’s opening service game and that became a theme for the Greek.

Djokovic broke serve in the next game with an angled fore-hand and fought off break points at 4-2 on his way to taking the opening set. The second set was one-sided after Djokovic broke in the fifth game and Tsitsipas became ragged.

World number one Djok-ovic bided his time in the third and broke serve at 4-4 with a dropshot-lob combination that had Tsitsipas scurrying around court all night.

But then things got compli-cated.

Djokovic missed a routine

backhand down the line on match point in the next game and suddenly Tsitsipas began to offload with his punishing groundstrokes.

Tsitsipas finally converted a break point at the 11th time of his asking when a Djokovic fore-hand went long and then struck a forehand winner to break again for the set two games later.

Out of nowhere the match be-came a contest and after breaks were exchanged at the start of the fourth set, Tsitsipas dug deep to save break points at 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4 in the fourth.

Serving at 4-5 Djokovic led 40-15 but Tsitsipas clawed it back and Djokovic fluffed a dropshot at-tempt on set point.

Tsitsipas had required treat-ment on his legs in the fourth set and a clinical Djokovic was mer-ciless in the decider, stretching his opponent with a succession of dropshots.

Djokovic broke at 1-1 with yet another dropshot and when Tsitsipas double-faulted to hand Djokovic a 4-1 lead his coura-geous challenge was over.

Rashford tops list of UK honours for key virus workers

Manchester United foot-baller Marcus Rashford

was honoured by Queen Eliz-abeth II on Friday in recogni-tion of his campaign to feed vulnerable children, alongside hundreds of key workers who helped in the fight against the coronavirus.

The England international is one of the highest-profile fig-ures in the monarch’s birthday honours list, which was post-poned from June in order to include frontline health work-ers and others in the Covid-19 effort.

The 22-year-old forced a government U-turn over its free school meals policy, ensuring children in need would receive meal vouch-ers throughout the summer months, and has formed a

child food poverty task force.Rashford, who has been

made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), said he was “honoured and humbled” to receive the award.

“Let’s stand together in say-ing that no children in the UK should be going to bed hun-gry,” he said. “As I have said many times before, no matter your feeling or opinion, not having access to food is never the child’s fault.”

Fitness expert Joe Wicks, whose daily online exercise sessions drew millions of viewers across the globe, is also being made an MBE.

‘Spot on’ Bottas edges Hamilton to take pole at Eifel GP

• Finn faster than Briton by 0.256sec at the Nurburgring

• Verstappen third for Red Bull, Ferrari’s Leclerc fourth

AFP | Nurburgring

Valtteri Bottas produced a blistering track record on

his final qualifying lap yester-day to edge Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton and claim pole position for the Eifel Grand Prix.

Bottas clocked a best lap of one minute and 25.269 seconds to beat the championship lead-er by two-tenths of a second in very cold conditions following only one practice session after Friday’s running was cancelled due to fog.

It was Bottas’s third pole this year and the 14th of his career, a feat that he hopes can help him keep alive his champion-ship challenge. After winning in Russia two weeks ago he lies 44 points be-hind Hamilton.

The two ‘black arrows’ were pushed all the way by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who lost grip on his final run and wound up third ahead of Charles Leclerc of Ferrari and Alex Albon in the second Red Bull car.

“It is such a nice feeling when you do it on the last lap –- my last lap was spot on,” said Bot-tas.

“It’s been pretty tricky with short practice and these con-ditions getting the tyres in the sweet spot, that was one of the bigger things today.

The chilly autumn weather has shaped practice and quali-fying. Friday’s practice sessions

were wiped out by fog and rain. “I believe I can win,” said

Bottas. “That’s the only goal for tomorrow and hopefully we can have a good start.”

Hamilton, who needs just one victory to equal Michael Schu-macher’s record of 91 Grand Prix victo-ries, had to settle for second on the grid.

“Valtteri is two-tenths ahead and he did a good job, so con-gratulations to him,” he said. “There is plenty of time for me to regain…

Daniel Ricciardo was sixth ahead of his Renault team-mate Esteban Ocon, Lando Norris of McLaren, Sergio Perez of Racing Point and Carlos Sainz

in the second McLaren.Shortly before qualifying,

Racing Point announced that Nico Hulkenberg would step in for Lance Stroll who was “unwell”.

Hulkenberg, who covered for Stroll’s teammate Sergio Perez at Silverstone, was called at short no-tice from a Cologne cafe. Without any practice, he qualified at the back of the grid.

The session began in bright, cold conditions with the air temperature struggling to ex-ceed 10 de-grees, but no repeat of the fog and rain that led to the cancellation of both prac-tice sessions on Friday.

Hulkenberg was one of the drivers out early in the session to familiarise himself with Stroll’s set-tings and the circuit before Verstappen set the pace for Red Bull, topping Bottas and Hamilton with Leclerc fourth.

The ‘super-sub’ pushed, but it was asking too much of Hulkenberg and he failed to reach Q2 and qualified 20th, although his time was only 0.9 seconds shy of team-mate Perez in ninth.

Spirited bowling perfor-mance by Royal Challengers

Bangalore (RCB) guided them to a 37-run victory over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Dubai In-ternational Stadium.

Chasing a moderate target of 170, CSK openers failed to provide a solid start as they went back to the pavilion ear-ly. Washington Sundar scalped both Faf du Plessis (8) and Shane Watson (14) in fourth and sixth over respectively.

Ambati Rayudu and IPL

debutant N Jagadeesan played cautiously and stitched a part-nership of 64-run for the third

wicket. In the 15th over, Jaga-deesan fell short of his crease and was run out by Chris Mor-ris.

Jagadeesan played a knock of 33 runs. Skipper Dhoni joined Rayudu in the middle and add-ed a 17-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Dhoni (10) was bagged by Yuzvendra Chahal in the 16th over as he was trying to attack the spinner.

BRAVE CF has elevated amateur MMA by helping to transform IMMAF WorldsSince its inception, BRAVE CF has become the go-to promotion for amateur talents that stood out within the IMMAF ranks

• BRAVE CF is the only professional MMA promotion that hosted IMMAF World Championships outside of the United States

TDT | Manama

BRAVE Combat Federation was founded upon the core vision of creating a new

system to the sport of MMA. For this, empowering it from the grassroot level up to the inter-national platforms was a key element in the eyes of His High-ness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the founder of BRAVE CF.

And no other organization or entity has supported the cause

more than BRAVE Combat Fed-era-tion. Since its inception, BRAVE CF has become the go-to

promotion for amateur talents that stood out within the In-ternational Mixed Martial Arts

Federation (IMMAF) ranks.More than that, BRAVE Com-

bat Federation is the only pro-fessional MMA promotion that hosted IMMAF World Champi-onships outside of the United States, breaking all previous set records in par-ticipation, en-gagement, and nations repre-sented, elevating the tourna-ment’s level and offering the amateur competitors a massive platform.

Not only that, but BRAVE CF has also helped the World Championship transform it-self from a side-show to a main event, becoming a huge week-long show on its own with open-ing and closing cer-emonies, awards, etc.

In its last edition, in 2019, the IMMAF World Championships took place once again in Bah-rain, with more than 500 ath-

letes representing 50+ countries descending upon the Kingdom for the week-long tournaments.

One of the most recent exam-ples of this perfect integration and development system came through England’s Muhammad Mokaev. The two-time IMMAF World Champion got both of his junior amateur world titles fighting in the Kingdom of Bah-rain and then returned to the country for Kombat Kingdom, a series of events held by BRAVE CF, and took the professional MMA world by storm, being la-beled as the top prospect in the sport now.

BRAVE Combat Federation once again cements its position as the pioneer of a new eco-system to the sport of Mixed Martial Arts, which brings a much broader view, expanding from the current event-based model to a sports-business, with complex and organized structures.
