    Frequently asked questions

A comprehensive list and description of all

our scholarships can be found on our website

    scholarships.unsw.edu.au.

Scholarships are available to reward academic and/or

sporting excellence, to assist students from rural areas

or those with financial disadvantage, for Indigenous

students, for students wanting to study a particularprogram, for all round achievement and for relocation

    from interstate.

What scholarships areavailable for me? Applications for UNSW equity scholarships such as the

UNSW Vice Chancellors Equity Scholarships, ACCESS

Assist and Commonwealth Scholarships must all be

made through UAC see uac.edu.au. Applications

for UNSW Co-op Scholarships must be made online

via coop.unsw.edu.au. There are some scholarships

such as the Scientia Scholarship and Academic

Achievement Award that do not require the completion

of an application as students will either be automaticallyeligible or will have been nominated by their school.

    Exceptions

You must read the details of each scholarship

carefully and provide the documentation requested.

All documentation should be submitted online at

    scholarships.unsw.edu.au.

What documentationshould I attach to myapplication?

Closing dates for scholarships vary. Most scholarships

for first year students close on 30 September each year.

    What is the closing date?

Generally students can only hold one scholarship at

any one time. However there are exceptions and if you

are offered more than one UNSW scholarship you will

be advised whether you are permitted to hold them

    concurrently.

Can I hold more thanone scholarship?

How much will I be paid? This depends on the value and nature of the

scholarship. Most scholarships pay the value of

the scholarship directly into your bank account on

a fortnightly basis or in equal installments over an

    academic year.

Do I need to pay tax?In most cases scholarships are exempt from tax.

However you should check the details for each

scholarship and also visit the Australian Tax Office

    website ato.gov.au .

What is a rural student?Generally, you must have been enrolled at a country

high school and your family home has also been located

in a rural area for at least four years of your high school

years (some scholarships are also restricted to NSW

applicants). Rural areas will generally be considered

    according to the Commonwealths Accessibility/

Remoteness Index of Australia (ARIA) and the Rural,

Remote and Metropolitan Areas (RRMA) classification.

Generally you cannot defer scholarships unlessotherwise stated.

    Can I defer myscholarship?

You must first register on our scholarships website

    (scholarships.unsw.edu.au), once you have identified

scholarships which match your circumstances you must

submit your application online ensuring that you have

addressed the selection criteria for each scholarship.

    See the following for exceptions.
