FIRST GRADE MATCH REPORT

Uni entertained Briars who are second on the ladder and are one of the favourites for the comp. Briars started quick and had Uni under pressure early. Briars crossed the line after 3 minutes but were held up by an excellent tackle by Ed Campbell. From the resulting scrum Uni’s defence was outstanding and Briars couldn’t cross the Uni line. Their sustained pressure lead to a penalty which they slotted and lead 3 – 0. Uni were spurred into action and from the kick off Uni reclaimed the ball and with some good work DC found himself in open space with the try line wide open but he had a brain fart and popped a simple pass to Schroeder for Uni to go ahead 7 – 3.

Briars came back strong but further strong defence from Uni stemmed their attack, Uni got their hands on the ball and were attacking in Briars 22m but a poor pass from Dales went to ground which Briars snapped up and went 80m for an undeserved try. Uni were down 7 – 8.

The Uni scrum dominated through out the match and on the back of that the Uni forwards dominated the break down. Briars however worked their game plan well and

were on the attack again, they crossed the line again but were once more held up, however from the resulting scrum Briars crossed the line placing the score at 7 – 15. Briars didn’t take the foot off the gas and ran in another 2 quick tries leaving Uni trailing 7 – 25.

Uni stayed patient and didn’t drop their heads and with some sustained pressure Uni scored a well worked try by Jermaine right on half time. Uni entered the half time break behind 14 – 25.

The boys were intimidated by Briars and we felt at half time they were beatable. Uni took to the filed fired up, DC lead by example and put his head where shark usually has his foot and coped a split eye for his troubles. With DC off the field the forwards found their feet and with strong forward play were in the Briars red zone, the back line was set with an over lap. The resulting pass from Dills went behind Dales, Briars pounced on the loose ball and went the length of the field for their second lucky try of the day. That put the score at 14 - 32 and Briars looked to have pulled away.

Briars took confidence from their lucky scores and attacked Uni’s line again, Steve Hickey made a great try saving tackle to keep Briars at bay for the time being. 1st’s decided we needed some of 2nd grades Note to self: Avoid Keith Jeffs.

form and Kenny Lau, Angus and Jimmy were all sent on to help out. Unfortunately this was to no avail Briars with constant pressure scored another 3 tries blowing the score out to 14 – 51. Uni had the last laugh with a try in the corner on the back of some good hands to yank, Mike Hayley on debut. The score ended up and undeserved 19 – 51.

With the scrum being a positive point all day, points went to Dave Davis (3) and Keith Jeffs (2) and for their non stop work all day a point went to the back row. Newport this will be a different prospect and Uni will end the year on a high with an emphatic win.

SECOND GRADE MATCH REPORT

Since Rob Meggison’s demotion to 3rd grade several weeks ago, 2nd grade have experienced a Parramatta Eels-like surge to finals footy, whilst 3’s are left fighting for their finals berth.

With 5 bonus point wins on the trot and a 24-15 away victory over Briars in the first round, Uni 2’s were confident of securing a sixth successive bonus point win.

After Captain Burge’s call to arms last week it was surprisingly none of the lineup followed Rambo in his return to the Navy. In his place Mingma Sherpa was called in to the front row. Mid week The Boss had been looking through the dictionary and shared his ‘one word’ with the team – ‘Grand Final’, inspiring them to their best training session of the season to take into the game.

Uni took to the field, whilst on the sideline an unfamiliar sight was seen. Not only was Geez back from covering Dags in first grade, but JK could stand straight without an aid…JK appeared to not still be drunk from the previous night! Geez himself had a fairly glazed-over look, all mystery as to why was solved when JK shared with the team Geez had followed in Tom Fleming’s footsteps and recently became engaged, congrats to Geez. Though this was one congratulations that wasn’t met with an unwelcome hug from Kenny.

After last week’s domination by the forwards, it was the backline’s turn to shine. In early exchanges, pressured defence allowed no.13 Dave Norris to pounce on a loose ball and glide untouched from 30m to set Uni on their way.

The extras were duly added by Max Powers, who begged for a return to the kicking duties after running and hiding during last weeks hurricane.

Uni’s gameplay is usually centered around barnstorming hit ups from Ponke in midfield, but his contribution was more like his namesake Jerome’s this week, negligible. The big man is saving himself for finals footy.

The front row of Klug the Yank, JJ Freedman and Mingma were again dominant at scrum time, with Josh supplying clean lineout ball to Cozza, Big Dave and the Hickster (having recently acquired the world’s smallest most feminine canaine). Accompanied by The Boss and Ponks, the forward pack again laid the perfect platform for the backs to unleash hell.

6 UNSW RUGBY NEWSLETTER 20 AUGUST 2010

Cradling the balls from the back, the young Justin Bieber look-a-like at scrum half serviced Kenny Lau well all day. Little Jimmy Cain showed his class beyond his years partnering Lau to open space out wide, with the ball travelling through several pairs of hands before superstar fullback (his words) Gas MacDonald was sent over towards the corner. Gas attributed his finishing ability to time spent on the sidelines watching his hero, 1st grade Danny Schroder. Gas managed to stay well clear of any contact or contribution to the play, receiving the ball 2m from the line to fall over and ground in one action…a real tribute to his hero.

With utility back Dew Dog fitting into his 12 mould superbly, a fine break led to returning left wing Leech going over for Uni’s third try.

Having shed 15 unwanted kilos in his resurrection in 2nd grade, Kenny Lau has developed to become the form no.10 in the Stockdale Cup, and top field goal scorer. With Uni working the ball left through the forwards at half way, Lau spotted space over on the right wing and called the crossfield kick to Powers. With the kick executed to perfection, it was left for Powers to take the ball on the fly, despite his best efforts to drop the ball

and knock on when grounding, to secure Uni the bonus point before half time.

Half time chat revolved around Uni playing to their game plan and maintaining domination through the second half, unlike previous weeks.

The referee for the day had different interpretations of the break down rules to many of the players, who must learn to adapt to the referee, not challenge him – a trait that could lose a close finals battle. With this error of judgement, Uni conceded too many penalties, allowing the visitors to enter Uni’s 22 for the first time.

Solid defence, constantly pushing Briars back over the gain line saw a knock on from an intercept attempt lead to Briars’ only points, a penalty try with conversion. Despite all the points racked up in Uni’s favour, this impenetrable defence is what can see Uni take out this year’s final.

From kickoff, an unnoticed incident with Seppo prop Dave Klug reportedly biting an opponents inner thigh led to a ticking off from the ref, Kluggy’s foul mouthed response earned him 10 minutes on the sideline. On came Colty Simon Pearsall to shore up the scrum with Dave O being sacrificed. In this period with a man disadvantage (no, Mackey hadn’t come on, I mean the sin binning) Uni scored yet another backs try. Fast hands down the line, with a superb flick by Lau saw Leech race into the corner for his second of the day.

Collapsing under his bulging frame, Josh rolled his ankle and was aptly replaced by George Davis at hooker. Earning a breather Ponkston was also replaced, this time by Bobby MacMahon, making his own presence felt around the field.

With Uni commanding Briars around the field, the visitors tired towards the end, allowing a break by George Davis to put Powers clear and under the posts for his second try. With previously unseen 2nd grade conversion success Uni recorded a 40-7 stomping victory.

Playing a great debut, Mingma Sherpa earned a coach’s point, along with Ziplock. Inexplicably, Gas earned himself a couple, and on the back of recent overlooked performances, The Lau came away with three. Lau was overjoyed to finally be acknowledged, but feared the customary shotgun he was to perform after his previous efforts in Melbourne resulted in a swift exit to the bathroom. This week however he crushed the can under 4 seconds.

2’s march on to the finals with an unassailable 11 point gap between themselves and 5th place.

All aboard the fun bus to Newport!

FOURTH GRADE MATCH REPORT

The Emu and the Wombat scaring seagulls.

This Briars player is clearly not a Julia Gillard supporter.

The Filthies went into this game against Briars knowing a win was not enough ….. we needed to win and win well with a bonus point as the points table with two weeks to go closely resembled the Olympic 100m final – extremely close, apart from the leader - minus the supreme athletes !

We started well again this week with the forwards dominating the early exchanges and after some sustained pressure Joe Brooks ghosted his way through Briars inside backs to score under the posts to give us an early 7-0 lead. Although we were definitely the dominant team for the remainder of the first half we were unable to score anymore points. At this point the pressure was on because we knew we had to score 4 tries and we missed several opportunities in the first half to make this happen.

At the break Tricky spoke about commitment, discipline, patience and commitment …. And thankfully in the second half we did not let him down. The first to cross the stripe was Dom Varley, as the forwards mauled the ball towards the Briars line a mass of bodies were piled everywhere. After some thorough investigative work from the ref it was revealed that Dom had been the lucky last man to have the ball in hand and was duly awarded the meat pie. After two cameo appearances in a row the coaches were wishing big Dom would make the trek down the F3 a few more times ! This took the score to 12-0.

Then Tricky made his first change. With a glut of outside backs sitting on the bench the flying Frenchmen Antoine Boussard was summoned to replace Dave “Genitals” Jennings. And Antoine did not disappoint the rowdy home crowd. After some good lead up work from the piglets and a slick backline move Frenchy touched down in the corner within minutes of being on the field to take the score to 17-0 and keep our finals chances alive.

Then with time ticking away Briars spread the ball to their backs only to have the Don Juan of French Rugby swoop in and steal the ball off the unsuspecting ball carrier and scoot 50m to score under the posts to give us the all important bonus point. This took the score to 24-0 and we were then keen to add to our points differential leading into the final game against Newport.

Another solid effort from the forwards, and after taking the Briars forwards on in the first half successfully the piggies unselfishly “let it sing” in the second half allowing us to grab four tries.

Going into this week’s Newport game we know our fate is in our own hands thankfully, but to guarantee a finals spot we will need to again win with a bonus point to be assured against a team that is always hard to beat at home. The Filthies are very pumped up to show we deserve to be playing for at least another week.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

A new contender - If the ‘Disastro can finally bag the hat-trick he has been threatening all year, the ‘Corp could be in trouble.

We have safely secured fourth position on the table after a strong finish to the year.

Now that we are really at the business end of the Club Championships, the top spot looks likely to go to new comers Hunter Hill (facing Briars) or Barker Old Boys (facing Oatley) - with every win and bonus point to count.

At the other end of the table, it could go either way, with the fate of each club in their own hands, as they fittingly face off in the final round.

We wish all four clubs the best of luck.
