India's long struggle for independence started in 1857
against the East India Company. British originally came to do business in India but later on took over India. There was a great battle fought in 1857
followed by various uprisings.

The date, 15th of August in 1947, has become a very important day in the
Indian history. It was the luckiest day of year 1947 when India became
independent after lots of hard struggle and sacrifices of the Indian freedom
fighters.

India has a long history of freedom struggle. In 100 years of freedom
struggle only a few are considered as freedom fighters and national heroes. There are many unsung heroes whose sacrifice for the country has not been
taken for consideration.

Kamaladevi ChattopadhyayShe was the first woman to run for a legislative seat in
India and interestingly, she was also the first Indian woman to be arrested by the British regime.
She played a very vital role as a social reformer and brought back handicrafts, theatres and handlooms to help in uplifting the socio- economic standard of the
Indian women.

Garimella Satyanarayana
He was an inspiration for the people of Andhra. As a writer, he used his skill to write influential
poems and songs to motivate people to join the movement against the British.

Velu Nachiyar
She was the first queen to wage a war against the British and gave them a good run for
their money. The former princess of Ramanathapuram opposed the British rule
even before the Sepoy mutiny.

Khudiram Bose
He was the youngest revolutionaries in the Indian Independence movement. He was 18 years, 8 months and 8 days old when he was
hung.

Matangini Hazra

She was a famous Gandhian leader and a humanitarian. She was an Indian revolutionary who played an active role in the struggle for
independence from colonial rule and followed Mahatma Gandhi's creed of non-violence. She
was shot dead, holding the flag of freedom in her hand, by the British. She was affectionately known as Gandhi Buri, Bengali for old lady
Gandhi.

Lakshmi Sahgal

Lakshmi Sahgal was a revolutionary of the Indian Independence Movement, an officer of
the Indian National Army and Minister of Women's Affairs in the Azad Hind Government.
She is commonly referred to in India as "Captain Lakshmi”.

Aruna Asaf Ali

Aruna Asaf Ali was a freedom fighter and is widely remembered for hoisting the
Congress flag at Bombay during the Quit India Movement. She is known as the 'Grand Old Lady' of the Independence Movement. She
worked in the worst of slums to offer aid to the poor and the exploited.
