t all began in 2010 when international investor Analjit Singh (or BAS as he is affectionately known) visited South Africa for the first time to attend the FIFA Soccer World Cup with his

daughter Piya, a soccer fan. He promptly fell in love with the country and its people. They visited Cape Town and ventured into the Cape winelands, where he felt a “deep sense of belonging, of energy, a sense of place” in the valley of Franschhoek. In Sanskrit Singh means lion, which is leeu in Afrikaans. The Leeu Collection is the manifestation of the founder’s vision for sophisticated escapes and unique guest experiences.

The Leeu Collection’s hospitality portfolio comprises three five-star boutique properties in South Africa’s winelands: Leeu Estates, a 17-room country house and boutique winery in the Franschhoek valley; Leeu House, an exclusive 12-room hotel in the heart of Franschhoek village; and Le Quartier Français, a romantic 32-room hotel including two independent LQF Villas, also located in the village. The first acquisition outside of South Africa was Linthwaite House, a 36-room country retreat overlooking Lake Windermere in England’s scenic Lake District, followed by Leeu Villa Querce in Florence, Italy, a luxury hotel and gardens (opening 2021), and The Fitz, a luxury hotel in the West End of London, United Kingdom (opening 2020).

Extending beyond the offering of luxury accommodation, BAS, in a joint venture with Mullineux Family Wines, created Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines, which produces award-winning wines in the Swartland and Franschhoek wine regions. These handcrafted wines are available for tasting at The Wine Studio on Leeu Estates. An exciting new enterprise, also in partnership with Chris and Andrea Mullineux, as well as Jean-Baptiste Cristini, is the Geometric Drinks Company (launching early 2018), which expertly produces a portfolio of innovative drinks.

Complementing the Leeu Collection are two ventures on the main street of Franschhoek. Tuk Tuk, a craft beer microbrewery in partnership with the award-winning Cape Brewing Company team, serves bespoke brews and Mexican food. An exotic culinary hub across the road from Leeu House, Heritage Square, is home to Marigold, Franschhoek’s first Indian restaurant. Adjacent to Le Quartier Français is Everard Read Franschhoek, in partnership with the Leeu Collection, a considered space showing the best modern and contemporary artworks by southern African artists. The gallery includes a majestic sculpture garden.

Three historic farms that featured prominently in the traditions of the Franschhoek valley – Dieu Donné, Klein Dassenberg and Von Ortloff – were joined to create a five-star getaway ensconced in 100 hectares (247 acres) of landscaped gardens, manicured vineyards and indigenous fynbos.

The exquisitely restored 19th-century Manor House, with its striking Cape vernacular design and exceptional interiors by internationally renowned interior designer Beverley Boswell, is the centrepiece of this working wine farm with its breathtaking valley and mountain views. Leisurely meals and top South African vintages from the cellar can be served in The Dining Room, beside the crackling fire, or in the conservatory. Delicious, innovative cuisine is prepared by Leeu Estates’ culinary team. Lunch and dinner menus showcase the finest locally sourced organic and ethically farmed produce in creative fusion dishes with vibrant world flavours. The decadent afternoon tea offers a selection of sweet and savoury treats.

An extensive network of trails crisscrossing the property takes you through the vineyards, along the banks of the river and up into the mountain foothills. The Four Quarter Vineyards with their walkways are planted with Sauvignon Blanc. A country herb and vegetable picking garden boasts incredible views and provides fresh seasonal produce for Leeu Estates. The gardens meander along the course of the river where oak trees are interplanted with evergreens, creating a perennial screen of green.

Bokkie Garden

The Afrikaans word bokkie (small buck) is a term of endearment used by South Africans, comparable to ‘beloved’ or ‘sweetheart’. Pivotal to the Bokkie Garden is ‘Reflective Resonance’ by acclaimed artist Angus Taylor, a bronze and Belfast granite sculpture that has become a Franschhoek landmark. ‘Homecoming’ – Diana, the goddess of the forest and animals, walking with a small herd of springbuck, cast in bronze by sculptor Otto du Plessis – also features in the garden, which is a serene and meditative space where people can reconnect with nature and one another.

Cellar Cottage, Leeu Estates – living room

Leeu Spa, a contemporary wellness sanctuary designed by celebrated Spanish architect Tomeu Esteva, offers authentic massages and holistic treatments by expert therapists. These tailor-made treatments were inspired by Africa’s rich heritage and traditional rituals. Premium products from the innovative Almora, Esse and TheraNaka™ ranges are utilised. A range of treatments for children (aged six to 12) is also on offer.

The spa has separate changing and steam rooms for male and female guests, and a plunge pool overlooking a tranquil lily pond. There are also three treatment rooms, including one

double suite, and a hair and nail salon. The second main space in the wellness retreat is down a staircase to the open pool.

This gentle descent is an enchanting journey between an extended bamboo courtyard and stone walls to the vine-surrounded 15-metre (49-foot) infinity pool. Around the pool terraces, a luxuriously appointed covered sitting area serves as the resort’s serene living room.

A TechnoGym-equipped gym caters exclusively to the most fitness-orientated resident Leeu Collection guests.

Mullineux Family Wines was launched in 2007 by Chris and Andrea Mullineux. In 2013, BAS acquired a stake in the company and it was renamed Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines. The winery has notched up an impressive number of five-star ratings from Platter’s South African Wine Guide and was named its Winery of the Year for 2014 and 2016. Prestigious US magazine Wine Enthusiast named Andrea its 2016 Winemaker of the Year.

Their two wine portfolios have two distinct stories to tell. Mullineux aims to showcase the Swartland region by focusing mainly on Chenin Blanc and Syrah. Leeu Passant, based in Franschhoek, explores other wine regions while honouring the heritage, history and culture of the Cape. A natural approach is followed in both the vineyard and cellar. Grapes are hand-picked and the approach to winemaking is minimalist.

The Mullineux & Leeu winery and tasting facility on Leeu Estates offer guests a truly immersive wine experience. The Wine Studio is managed by the Mullineux & Leeu team, with knowledgeable staff on hand to guide guests in discovering the finer nuances of understanding these handcrafted wines. There is a choice between three tasting options: Signature, Single Terroir and Leeu Passant.

Leeu Collection guests can both taste and purchase premium wines from Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines. Each guest is invited to participate in a complimentary Signature Tasting per stay.

The Wine Studio is open to outside visitors too. The tasting venue can also be reserved for exclusive private functions, catered for by Leeu Estates’ culinary team.

The state-of-the-art multipurpose event and meeting venue at Leeu Estates is a light-filled space that perfectly complements the collection of art and sculptures. Indaba can accommodate up to 60 guests (cocktail) both inside and on the terrace overlooking the beautiful landscape for a variety of private parties, exhibitions, product launches and afternoon teas. Press briefings, seminars, business meetings and management think tank sessions for up to 20 guests (seated) can also be accommodated. The following room layouts can be configured: boardroom, cinema, schoolroom or U-shaped. Indaba, which has its own lift, boasts wireless audio and video conferencing equipment, a 203-centimetre (80-inch) television screen and high-speed Wi-Fi. Catering is done by Leeu Estates’ culinary team. Lunch and dinners can be selected from a variety of menu options for on-site dining or can be arranged off site at one of the Leeu Collection’s other restaurants.

Leeu House offers the appeal of a country guesthouse in the vibrant heart of Franschhoek village in the scenic Cape winelands. This 12-room boutique hotel provides a private and luxurious oasis set in serene gardens, complete with a 15-metre (49-foot) swimming pool and stunning mountain views, from which to explore the myriad attractions of the village and surrounding valley.

Leeu House’s stylish interiors are a contemporary take on Franschhoek’s traditional Cape Dutch style with its strong French influences. The seamlessly integrated finishes are neutral, calm and multi-textured. Rooms are equipped with the latest technology and luxurious amenities. Leeu House also

showcases a number of important contemporary artworks and sculptures. The immaculate front garden, one of only two on the main street, features sculptures of two iconic figures, Gandhi and Mandela, which have become a landmark in the village.

The Bar at LQF is a trendy, sociable space with a wood-burning fireplace. Outside seating creates the perfect spot to relax over a drink and watch the activity on the main street. Savour the signature craft gin cocktails or create your own G&T from the menu of delicious ingredients. There is also a selection of classic cock-tails, some with a unique contemporary twist, as well as delicious non-alcoholic versions. The well-stocked bar also offers artisan beers and ciders, as well as a hand-picked selection of proudly South African wines.

The sunny Garden Room is a beautiful, inviting space that opens up through wide glass doors onto a manicured courtyard with outdoor seating. The breakfasts are legendary; from midday, an all-day dining menu makes for a relaxing afternoon or evening of sharing food and wine with friends.

Everard Read, the oldest commercial art gallery on the African continent, was established in 1913. Everard Read and its sister gallery Circa have two contemporary art galleries in Johannesburg and Cape Town respectively, and one in London. Their sixth gallery, Everard Read Franschhoek, in partnership with the Leeu Collection, is a considered space showing the best modern and contemporary artworks by southern African artists. Adjacent to Le Quartier Français, the gallery includes a sculpture garden for monumental works interspersed with herbs and vegetables, the first of its kind in South Africa. The fresh produce from the garden features on the menus of the Leeu Collection’s restaurants.

Established by the La Colombe team at Silvermist Wine Estate in Constantia and complementing the iconic restaurant, La Petite Colombe at Le Quartier Français is being driven by celebrity chef Scot Kirton and head chef James Gaag. The Franschhoek kitchen is headed up by talented young La Colombe chef John Norris-Rogers. Tasting menus focus on the finest local and seasonal produce, recommended with a rare and fine wine selection.

Leeu Collection Ventures

Adjacent to Leeu House, Tuk Tuk, a craft beer microbrewery in partnership with the award-winning Cape Brewing Company (CBC) team, serves bespoke brews and Mexican-inspired food. Guests can be seated indoors around the 250-litre capacity copper microbrewery and watch fine craft beer being expertly brewed right in front of them, or outdoors on the bustling main street. On offer is the Tuk Tuk range, as well as a selection of CBC craft beers. Brewer Dewald Goosen was a senior brewer at CBC before taking on the reins at Tuk Tuk. This adventurous and passionate brewer is in his element at Tuk Tuk, which will be creating new benchmarks by experimenting with different ingredients and custom batches.

Complementing the Leeu Collection, Heritage Square, an exciting culinary hub across the road from Leeu House, is home to Marigold, Franschhoek’s first classic Indian cuisine restaurant. Marigold, with its exposed brickwork, timber flooring, bold geometric wallpaper, African-inspired fabric on banquette seating and riempie screen dividers, also has outdoor seating in the courtyard, which is the sociable hub of the square. Taking pride of place at the entrance to the courtyard is a statue of a lion by acclaimed sculptor Jop Kunneke, a playful reference to the Leeu Collection. Marigold evokes the exotic with a menu inspired by aromatic and spicy North Indian cuisine. Seasoned chef Vanie Padayachee visited India to experience the culture and cuisine first-hand, bringing to Marigold’s offering authenticity and a tangible reference to its origins.

Complementing the Leeu Collection, the Geometric Drinks Company brings botanically spirited drinks to Franschhoek. The collection includes tonics, infusions and distilled spirits. The Siding, a heritage site, will be the home of the company and its botanical cocktail lab (opening early 2018). A working botanical farm and experimental garden will be planted, and the various botanical libations will be produced on site. Small-batch production is in the capable hands of Jean-Baptiste Cristini.

In partnership with international celebrity chef and restaurateur, Ritu Dalmia, Cittamani opened its doors in Milan, Italy, bringing the finest modern Indian cuisine to the city.

Linthwaite House is located in the heart of England’s Lake District, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Set in well-maintained gardens and private woodland grounds, this country retreat has a private tarn (small lake) with its own summerhouse. On a hilltop overlooking Lake Windermere, Linthwaite is an idyllic wedding venue and the perfect base from which to discover the scenic surroundings. There’s plenty to keep you on the property too, from exploring the private grounds to croquet, fly fishing and a pétanque pitch. At Stella, the innovative new restaurant, guests can sample some of the finest cuisine in the Lake District, based on locally sourced and organic produce that portrays the best of the Cumbrian region and the season, influenced by international celebrity chef Ritu Dalmia and her passion for the Italian style of cooking. The former Collegio Alla Querce in Florence, Italy, is being transformed into Leeu Villa Querce, a luxury hotel and pristine gardens (opening 2021). Florence, with its distinctive medieval skyline, is the capital city of the Tuscany region. Known as the ‘cradle of the Renaissance’, the city is noted for its art, architecture, monuments and museums. The historic centre of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Florence is only a short drive from the undulating hills of the Chianti countryside, home to many well-known

An office building in fashionable Fitzrovia in the West End of London, United Kingdom, will be turned into The Fitz, a luxury hotel (opening 2020). Many of the city’s major tourist attractions and famous theatres are concentrated in the area surrounding the hotel.

The Leeu Collection is a proud sponsor of the Franschhoek-based Kusasa Project Early Learning Centre, a school for 120 disadvantaged children that employs the best education practices in an independent, caring and stimulating environment.

An annual donation goes towards teachers’ salaries, an important investment in the lives of the young children in the valley during their formative years. Their emotional, social and physical development has a direct effect on their overall growth and the adults they will become, optimising their future wellbeing.

The Leeu Collection continues to support the Isabelo: Sharing is Caring project, which is responsible for providing meals to several schools in the Franschhoek valley, by producing over 200 highly nutritious muffins in its central bakery kitchen each Friday.
