YOU CAN KNOW FOR SURE!The assurance that you have eternal life is based on God’s unchanging Word. The Bible provides this assurance to those who believe on Him.

“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” John 3:36

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” John 1:12

God does not lie. He has promised everlasting life to those who believe on Him as Savior.

“In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began.” Titus 1:2

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:13

Satan will try to convince you that there is plenty of time to believe on Jesus Christ as Savior – it is his most dangerous strategy. The Bible reminds us, however, that we do not always know what lies ahead.

“Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” James 4:14

Would you like to believe on Jesus Christ as your Savior right now?

Pray Sincerely …

“Dear Jesus, I know I am a sinner and that I deserve Hell. I believe that you died on the cross, paid the penalty for my sin, and rose from the dead three days later. I am placing my faith in you alone to forgive my sin and save me. Thank you for giving me eternal life. In Jesus’ name, AMEN.”

Heaven is a perfect place, without sin. Therefore, man’s sin must be paid for before entering God’s presence (Heaven). Jesus paid that penalty for you and provided the only way to enter Heaven. You must believe He did this for you in order

to be saved from your sin.

“…Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou

shalt be saved…” Acts 16:31

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his

only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16

Believing is not merely acknowledging that Jesus existed or that He was a good person.

Believing is trusting in Jesus Christ alone for eternal life. You must have faith that He died for you, paid the price for your sin, and is the only way to Heaven.

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” Romans 10:9

Has there been a time in your life when you believed on Jesus Christ as Savior?

Noteworthy News: Bibles to Myanmar Update

I’m very thankful to own a Bible in a largely Bible-less world. The Scriptural account of the ten lepers comes to mind when I think of being thankful or thankless for the Word of God. John 1:1 tells us that Christ Himself and the Word are the same. Therefore, all ten of the lepers in Luke 17 had the Word of God at one time. Nine of those who were healed that day left the Word without being thankful for Him. However, one leper did return and worship; thankful for the Word Himself. If we were to stop and think about the 7 billion souls on our planet (which often we don’t), what might be the number of them that even have the Word to be thankful for? There are more people in the world without a Bible than with one. This task of getting the Word of God into the hands of those without is the task of Bearing Precious Seed/FirstBible. Many in the world will, one day, join us in our thankfulness, and return to worship Christ as well, if we will simply remain obedient to His command. He, the Word, has commissioned us to go unto all the world and preach the Word. The desire to get a first copy of the Word of God into the spiritually leprous hands of the Unreached Peoples is imperative. God’s people must band together for the sake of accomplishing this monumental task that is too large for anyone of us, but not too large for all of us.Please take a moment before reading further and thank God for Himself. Pray also for those who do not yet know the Word.

In His work together,

One of the outstanding experiences of my many years as a pastor was our involvement in the Bibles to Myanmar project a few years ago.  It was our joy to invest $50,000 toward this project. After a period of incredible barriers to revive the printing of Judson’s translation of the Bible which had been buried over the many years, we have rejoiced to see several containers of Scriptures going across the border into Myanmar.  We later received word of various revivals, reports of people sleeping with their own copy of God’s Word and others staying up all night reading their own Bible after being accustomed to sharing ONE BIBLE, tattered and torn among the local church

congregation. It thrilled our hearts as to witness how God was using our investment.  We were told of nationals who had put their lives in jeopardy to get the Scriptures into the country across the borders.God further blessed me as I was leading a tour of college young ladies in

Kalispel, Montana, just south of the Canadian border. After I introduced myself as the former pastor of Gethsemane Baptist Church in Long Beach, a young man came running up to me with tears in his eyes, hugging me and explaining how he had been hoped to meet me for several years.  His name was Van Hre, now in the States attempting to raise funds to support him, his wife and small child as a full-time missionary to Myanmar.  He shared how he had learned that I was the pastor who had led our congregation to fund the Bibles to Myanmar project for his people. He told how he was the one who had actually transported the wagon-load of Bibles covered in straw and overlaid with merchandise to distract the authorities as they crossed from Thailand into Myanmar! I never thought I would meet face to face this brother until we met in Heaven.I shall not soon forget our tears and joy we shared together during those brief moments. It was a sweet reminder of the future scene in Heaven at that great reunion of all the saints when we will know the truth of that song so familiar, “It will be worth it all, when we see Jesus...life’s trials will seem so small when we see Him!” Amen and Amen!

GREEK BIBLESBY DR. BILL DUTTRY, FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF MILFORD

“…unto the church of the Thessalonians …” I Thess. 1: 1In approximately 50 AD, the Thessalonians received the Word of God; it was carried as an original and single copy in the hands of a courier from Athens, probably on mule-back, a distance of 310 miles. It was the provincial capital so most likely large and prosperous for that period of time.In August, 2012, the Thessalonians received God’s Word once more, this time with some differences; such as, they received a translation, not an original. It arrived from Milford, Ohio, not Athens, and it came on an eighteen-wheeler instead of a mule. Additionally, they received not just one copy of one book of the Bible but 30,000 copies of the whole New Testament and 100,000 copies of the Gospel of John as well as110,000 tracts. This project was led by a team of church-planters under the leadership of Brent Logan from Spring City Baptist Church, Cleveland, Virginia, pastored by Scott Suttle. Logan felt the call of God to go to this ancient Bible city and reseed it with the Word of God and plant churches where a great church once was. I Thess.1: 8 “For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad.” The Bible printing for this project was made possible because of the joint efforts of firstBible International (FBI) and Bearing Precious Seed (BPS) both under the authority of First Baptist Church of Milford, Ohio and a group of concerned Fundamental Baptist churches across America.Won’t it be exciting to meet some of these dear people at the Judgment Seat of Christ who are from this Bible town saved two millennium after Paul’s visit there?

HE WROTEWhat to Do With the Word of God Now That You Have It

Dr. Charles KeenDirector, firstBible International

“At that time the Lord said unto me, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto …and I will write on the tables the words

that were in the first tables...” Deuteronomy 10:1-5

INTRODUCTIONIn our Bible selection we have Moses facing the condition, a world without

the Scriptures. Deut 10:4 says, “…He wrote...” I do not think I understood the gravity of these words until I realized we were two thousand years into human history before man was given the Word of God in written form (from Adam to Moses, God communicated with man only in a verbally or pictorially/types method1). This event on Mt Sinai in Deuteronomy 10 describes Moses getting the preserved Written Word for the first time called Inspiration; it is only over-shadowed by God giving the Living Word through the virgin Mary in Bethlehem), called the Incarnation. 2 Peter 1:19 says, “…we have a more sure word of prophecy.” Since Moses, we now have His covenant in written form. I do not think Peter meant we have a better word, but it is in a better form of transmission, written form being a better way to communicate than a verbal form; at least in most cases. Since we have the privilege of having His Word in print, what are our physical responsibilities toward it? I am not talking about obeying it; that is a given. What are our physical stewardship responsibilities toward it? To help us determine what to do with it, let’s look to Moses to see what he did with the Word when he received it on Mt Sinai. In this article, we will identify three specific things he did.

Page 9: Unpublished Word Journal - Winter 2012

UNPUBLISHED WORD JOURNAL WINTER 2012 / 9

I. HE HAD THE RESPONSIBILITY TO PRESERVE IT.The Materials He Used: According to Deuteronomy 10:1-3, 5, Moses was to use shittim2 wood for the Ark and to write on tablets of stone. The materials on which God would write and the ark he was to build for storing the writings incorporated some of the most durable materials of the day, tables of stone …shittim wood. The materials used would at least hint at the fact that the Word of God is to be preserved and enduring.

The Location of the Ark: When we consider the location of the Ark, our premise of preservation only becomes more evident.

The Scripture was to remain in the confines of the nation of Israel, a people who themselves were promised survival throughout human history. This nation was to be the custodian of the written Word of God, which also was intended to be preserved. The location was significant by its placement among the people. The people had the responsibility of keeping the tablets given them by God. The placement of the Word of God was in the Ark of the Covenant. The Ark was to be housed in the Tabernacle, a tent like structure which was the center of Israel’s spiritual life. Within the Tabernacle, was a chamber called the Holy of Holies. This was a place no one was to enter with the exception of the High Priest, and only once a year and even then not without blood. There could not be a more secure place for the Word of God than among His people. From the materials and location, we must conclude God wanted His Word preserved and well cared for and it was His people’s responsibility to see this carried out.

The question is: “Has God given us His Word?” Yes! From Moses’ time, it continued to be given for 1600 years through prophet and apostle. Moses received the first of the inspired Word of God and John the last. Then it went through, and still is, going through a series of various language translations, and still has thousands yet to be accomplished. It was translated into English (Anglo Saxon) by men like Venerable Bede3, King Alfred4, John Wycliffe, William Tyndale, Myles Coverdale5, William Whittingham6, as well as the King James Version translators in 1611. We certainly do have the Word of God.Now that we have the Scripture, what are we to do with it and are we faithful to our responsibilities as Moses was to his? Are we protecting and preserving it? We need to think long and hard about how little we are doing to protect what God has given us. No doubt, as fundamentalists we have been vigorous in our verbal defense; however, we should not confuse preaching with preservation. We must partner with God in its physical paper and ink preservation. Both are needed, yea even required. We have a good position and can and do articulate it, but our participation in physically preserving it through translating and publishing it is weak, yea almost non-existant. It would do us well to remember those who gave their lives for the Word of God did so because they were not only involved in preaching, but also printing it!In our neglect of being the custodians of God’s word, we have created problems that can only be solved by owning up to our responsibility in preservation. We have so many big problems with Bible versions because we have let the wrong crowd be the custodians of the Bible.7 There may have been a time when we needed Para-church organizations and even the business world to provide the Word of God for us (and I think we should be thankful they did). But there are now a growing number of churches that have taken Colossians 4:16 seriously and the admonishment by

Paul, “And when this epistle is read among you, cause that it be read also in the church of Laodicea…” we have the skilled personnel, know how, and state of the art equipment to publish His precious Word. In 1973, God used Don Frazier and Bob Lemmon to burden the First Baptist Church/Milford to get Bible printing back under the authority of the local church. Bearing Precious Seed was started with that goal in mind. Nearly 40 years later, that ministry of First Baptist Church in Milford, Ohio, has printed more than 110 million copies of the Word of God. Other churches8, as well, are now printing millions of Bibles in many languages annually for half the world. How could we let it get to the point where a gender-neutral Bible would even be printed,9 as well as versions that deny the blood atonement, virgin birth, etc? I think it is because we have not been actively involved in our physical stewardship responsibility of preservation. It seems to me Revelation 22:18-19 gives us some preservation responsibilities. “…If any man shall add to these things…if any man take away from the words of the book of this prophesy…” In addition, Psalms 68:11 says, “The Lord gave the word: great was the company of those that published it.” Moses received the truth and hid it in an ark. David, under the inspiration of the blessed Holy Spirit, suggests a good place to preserve the Bible is to hide it in our hearts10 (like the Ark). One way to get it out of our hearts into the world is to live what we have hid in our hearts: that is called our testimony.

II. HE HAD THE RESPONSIBILITY TO PUBLISH IT.Based upon the fact Moses now had the written Word of God, he was compelled to factor a new ministry into their lives through the scribe.11 Their original assignment was to make multiple and accurate hand copies of the Word of God. They took what was in the box (the Ark) and got it out of the box into the hands the kings,12 priests and populace of Israel. The Bible would have been of little profit if it stayed in the Ark. It needed to be published so it could be sent out to the world, so the scribes were assembled to do just that. The scribes were the circumcised sons of Abraham, a holy and peculiar people – men of God. They were not pagan business people trying to print Bibles to make money, but men who loved God.The world will never get the Bible if we trust only the profiteers to get it out. The simple reason being the vast majority of the world cannot afford what it costs and the publishing companies cannot afford to not make a profit so the Bible remains a product for the industrial nations while the poor and pagan go without. (By the way, the business world is not responsible to make the Bible available to the world; that privilege is held out for the church, yes your church and mine). We print it because of love – first and foremost, a love for Him, and out of that, a love for them. If we love God, we will love our neighbor.13

I have found out that love is expensive. The law is not expensive. But if you love someone, you will go above and beyond what you would ordinarily do. That is a far cry from simple obedience. If we are going to get the Bible to those who do not have it, we must decide that we are going to do if no matter the cost. What is it worth? Well, they will get to go to Heaven. Sometimes I think about what the Judgment Seat of Christ will be like, and occasionally it scares me. But I would like to stand there surrounded by men and women who went through this life with bones in their noses or wearing some kind of tribal garb in a primitive land. I want to be able

to say, “Lord, I didn’t do much, but I got your Word to those people. They got saved, and now they can worship you forever.” 14 I think He might tell me that I was not a great preacher or pastor, but I tried to do a good job in that area.

III. HE HAD THE RESPONSIBILITY TO PROCLAIM IT.Protecting and publishing the Bible does not complete the job. Someone has to take it and go to the people proclaiming it. We don’t print a million copies of the Bible and drop them out of an airplane over some village or city. I wish it were that easy, but Jesus did not instruct us to pray for Bibles. He said to pray for laborers.15

We cannot be satisfied with the fact that we have printed 100 million Bibles. That is a great accomplishment, but it is not very productive unless there is someone to take them where they are needed. A man needs to preach from that Bible and bring others under its authority.16

The Bible by itself does not have as much influence as we think. There are plenty of Bibles in the United States of America, and look at the condition we are in. There must be a proclamation. We see 413 times in the Word of God where a prophet proclaimed, “Thus saith the Lord.” The prophet penetrated the land carrying the Bible and preaching what was in it.The words of Nehemiah 8:8 make my point, “So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.” [Emphasis added.] This verse emphasizes the message as well as the messenger. It is a sad fact that we in fundamentalism are not producing enough of either the man or the message. We simply have overlooked the great need – for a written message and an army of messengers who will take that written message to those who have not heard. Many places in Scripture the Holy Spirit “marries” the man and the message, Haggai 1:13 says, “then spake Haggai the LORD’s messenger in the LORD’s message unto the people...” Psalm.126:6 says, “…he that goeth forth…bearing precious seed…” [Emphasis added.]We know the story in Acts 8 of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch riding together in a chariot. The eunuch was reading a passage that we know as Isaiah 53. Look at what transpired in Acts 8:30-35. “And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, “Understandest thou what thou readest? And he said, how can I, except some man should guide me?” Here is a classic example of a man who has the Scriptures and needs one to help him understand what is written. There are three billion people plus around the world who are in a spiritual prison, having neither the message nor the messenger. We should do all we can to make sure they know about it from us. It is our responsibility to provide both for them.

1The knowledge we have today indicates that there was no written scripture until Moses. The Law (Genesis through Deuteronomy) was given by Moses and written down for the people. See Exodus 24:4; Mark 10:5; John 1:45; 5:46; 7:19; Heb. 9:19.2Shittim wood was (and still is) a hard gnarly wood found in the Sinai Peninsula of Saudi Arabia. It is not subject to rotting, decay or insects. It is the wood used in the Tabernacle (see Exodus 25-27, 30, 35, 36 et al). The shittah tree is a perfect type of the humanity of Jesus Christ. It speaks of the enduring humanity of Jesus Christ as a “root out of dry ground” (Isaiah 53:2). The Tabernacle is a type of Christ. 3Lived from 672-735 and was a prolific historian as well as writer of several commentaries. At the time of his death he was working on a translation of the Gospel of John into Anglo Saxon which was the forerunner of English.4Known as “Alfred the Great” was King of Wessex and lived from 849-899. He is credited for translating the first fifty Psalms into Anglo Saxon. 5Coverdale’s Great Bible was actually a revision of the Tyndale Bible which was incomplete at the death of William Tyndale. Myles Coverdale completed the translation of Tyndale’s Bible from the Latin Vulgate and German translations.6Whittingham supervised the Geneva Bible in Geneva, Switzerland where many Protestant scholars had fled to from England. He worked in collaboration with Myles Coverdale, Christopher Goodman, Anthony Gilby, Thomas Sampson and William Cole. Two significant men who were involved in the development of the Geneva Bible were John Calvin and John Knox of Scotland. Whittington was responsible for the New Testament translation and Anthony Gilby directed the Old Testament.7The Church has allowed (by default) the publishing houses such as Zondervan, Thomas-Nelson, Oxford University Press, Cambridge Press, Holman Publishing

and others to be the custodians of the printing of the Bible. They work from a profit motivation and thus have been the motivators of the “new“ translations since they are mostly concerned about the bottom line and not the preservation of the truth.8There are a number of churches which followed the lead of Don Fraizer and Bob Lemmon like Charles Keen of First Baptist Church Milford, Ohio to have Bearing Precious Seed (BPS) Printing Ministries. There are many such as Calvary Publishing, Lansing, Michigan, Bible Baptist Church of Beckley, WV; Berean Baptist Church, Indianapolis, IN, Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, Oliver Springs, TN; Victory Baptist Church, Milton, FL and a host of others which space will not permit their recognition. 9The custodians of the New International Version released a “gender neutral” Bible in 2011 called the Today’s New International Version (TNIV). See USA Today’s evaluation at http://www.usatoday.com/news/religion/2009-09-01-bible-translation_N.htm 10Psalm 119:11.11The term “scribe” does not appear until 2 Samuel 8:17. The priests did have the responsibility to “write” or we might say “copy” the word of God according to Numbers 5:23. The people were responsible for seeing that the Word of God was written in their houses according to Deuteronomy 6:9.12God gave instructions for the king in Israel (long before they had a human king) to write his own personal copy of the Law of Moses in Deuteronomy 17:18. This verse indicates they were to get the Scripture from the Levites who were priests. 13See Matthew 22:37-40 and compare Leviticus 19:18.14Revelation 5:9-10.15Matthew 9:38; Luke 10:2.16Romans 10:14.

My love for Greek began at a very early age. Dad was teaching a Greek class for seminary students, and decided to try teaching his two-year-old son at home what he was teaching his students. For some reason, it stuck! The next day, he took me with him, and I became his “parrot” object lesson.Several years later, I first heard the phrase “Textus Receptus.” Upon enrollment in Greek 101, we were sent to purchase a Greek New Testament, printed by the Trinitarian Bible Society, and were told that we now owned the famous Textus Receptus. Although the 1894 Scrivener edition of the Greek New Testament is certainly an example of the Textus Receptus, there was much more to the story. In 1633, two Dutch brothers prepared to make a second printing of their famous Greek New Testament. In keeping with the traditions of that day, they inserted a preface entitled ‘Typographi Lectoribus de hac editione’ (The Typographer to the Reader of this edition). On the second page of that preface, you find the following sentence: ‘Textum ergo habes, nunc ab omnibus receptum.’ (Therefore you have the text, which is now received by all.)From those famous words, the name Textus Receptus was given to a family of texts that spans over one hundred years of printing. Beginning with the publication of Erasmus’ first edition in 1516, through the second edition of the Elzevir brothers’ text of 1633, we will look at seventeen different texts that comprise the “family” of the Textus Receptus. An understanding of the various texts will not only familiarize us with the true identity of the Textus

Receptus, but will also enable us to better understand how God has greatly used this text in the preservation and translation of the Bible.“Textus Receptus” means “Received Text,” named thus because it is the text which was received by Christians from Christians. A student of this text will realize that it is this text type which is the basis for almost all Bible translations made prior to the late nineteenth century. Its history is fascinating.Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam, a Catholic theologian and humanist living in the early sixteenth century, was the first to publish a copy of the New Testament in Greek. This volume includes a short introduction written by Johann Froben, the famous printer from Basel, Switzerland, who was also Erasmus’ friend. That is followed by Erasmus’ dedication of his work to Pope Leo X. Several articles in Latin and Greek follow next: “An Exhortation to the Pious Reader,” “The Methods of Erasmus of Rotterdam,” “The Defense of D. Erasmus of Rotterdam,” and

“Lives of the Four Evangelists from the [Writings] of Dorotheus the Martyr and Bishop of the Synod of Tyre.” The dedicatory and other articles set the stage for the New Testament text. After the text, Erasmus also included his now-famous Annotations, which had been previously published as a separate book.Erasmus’ first edition was published by Froben in Basel in 1516, as were the next four editions. The Greek text, according to Erasmus’ own article, “Methods,” is based on Greek manuscripts that were used by Christians in

Greek-speaking churches. The Greek text sits side by side with Erasmus’ translation into Latin. At that time, the Roman Catholic Church exclusively used the Latin Vulgate. With the Greek text, however, the minor differences between the Vulgate and Erasmus’ text were better understood by those who could read the underlying Greek words.A printer in Italy named Aldus Manutius is credited with the second edition of the Textus Receptus. Although the text itself is the same as Erasmus’ text of 1516, Aldus made several innovations to the text to facilitate its readability, and published it in 1518. The name “Aldus” is well-known even to printers today. He developed italic type, created several fonts used even today, and added punctuation to the Greek text of Erasmus’ New Testament. Because of his work, although there are no textual emendations, it is still considered a valuable member of the family of the texts of the Textus Receptus.Erasmus published a second edition of his work in 1519. This volume should not be confused with the edition made by Gerbelius that same year. The primary difference between the two texts is that Gerbelius only included the Greek text of Erasmus’ edition of 1516, but not the Latin translation. Erasmus’ edition of 1519 did include a few textual improvements to the text. This edition is known as the single textual basis of Luther’s German New Testament, translated in the fall of 1519.In 1521, a massive publication was issued by Cardinal Francisco Ximenes de Cisneros in Alcalá de Henares, Spain. Cardinal Ximenes (also spelled Jiménez or Jimenes) was the founder and president of the Complutensian University. Subsequent to an accord made in Vienna, Austria, in 1507, Ximenes determined to publish a multi-lingual edition of the Bible to be used by students and scholars. The six volumes are written in Latin, Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic. The first four volumes contain the Old Testament in all four languages. The fifth volume includes the New Testament in Greek and Latin, and the sixth volume is a Hebrew-Latin and Greek-Latin lexicon. This edition, known today as the Complutensian Polyglot, was printed over a four-year period, 1514-1517. The fifth volume, printed in 1514 and containing the New Testament, was actually the first of the six volumes to be printed. This means that although Erasmus’ text of 1516 was published prior to this text, Ximenes’ text was actually printed first, although it sat in a warehouse for seven years prior to its publication. There are many

interesting features found in the Complutensian Polyglot, not the least of which is the inclusion of the Johannine Comma, 1 John 5:7. Contrary to popular belief, it was not Erasmus who first included this text in the New Testament. As an aside, Cardinal Ximenes explains the inclusion of this verse in a note found in the margin of the text.Erasmus’ third edition contained several textual variants that coincided with the text of the Complutensian Polyglot. The most famous, mentioned above, is his inclusion of the text of 1 John 5:7.1 This edition is considered to be one of Erasmus’ best. The print quality is much clearer than the previous two editions, and a greater number of high-quality illustrations are to be found in this volume.Erasmus went on to publish two more editions of the New Testament. The fourth was in 1527, and the fifth in 1539. Both the fourth and the fifth contain Annotations, as did the first edition. The fourth edition has a feature unique to that edition: there are three columns of text. The first column is the Greek text, followed by Erasmus’ Latin translation, followed by the text of the Vulgate. The fifth edition has the classic insignia of its printer, Johann Froben, missing in the second, third, and fourth editions. These last two editions are not generally cited as sources for Bible translations, although they historically form part of the family of the Textus Receptus. In 1534, a Parisian printer named Simon de Colines printed a new edition of the Greek New Testament. It appears that Colines followed neither Erasmus nor the Complutensian Polyglot. He not only printed a “Hypothesis” concerning the history of each book, but he also added some punctuation, giving the text a slightly different sense. Although this work was not leaned upon as heavily as other texts, it was consulted during the sixteenth century by Bible translators. After that period, it seems to have gone into disuse, and does not appear to have been reprinted.According to Adam Clarke’s Bibliographical dictionary, there were over thirty different editions of the Greek New Testament printed prior to 1550.2 Before that time, all Greek texts were divided only into chapters. Not having the chapters divided into verses makes the reading of the text much more difficult.

At Librarian’s Choice, we have reviewed many books on as many subjects, including theology, missions, biography, etc. In this issue we look at A Glorious Church, authored by Mike Gass. I know Mike personally to be a man of God whose conclusions from research can be trusted. Unlike some history-based books, this account is not written with a pre-determined bias. The book arrests the reader’s interest, giving detail without belaboring the point. It convinces that history is not merely a chain of random and disconnected events, but rather His-history, making us aware of and thankful for our spiritual heritage.Just how important is history? That is easily answered by remembering the Old Testament is largely a record of Israel’s history, and Acts, the largest of the New Testaments books, is a record of church history.A Glorious Church fills a true void in fundamentalism. A dearth of not knowing our history has resulted in much damage in our movement. We have become known for compromise and/or desertion, either changing our name and ministry approach or totally abandoning the fundamental independent Baptist faith. A good knowledge of history would solve both conditions. Knowing our history would remind us we have something worth standing, yea even dying for.

All of the texts printed during this period use a font that resembles handwriting. We must remember that printing was still a recent invention to them, and it is to be expected that printed letters would look like handwritten letters. The single exception to this is the text of the Complutensian Polyglot published by Ximenes, in which a beautiful Greek font is used. It is very similar, although not identical, to the fonts used today to print Greek Text. All of the other texts contain abbreviated written forms, made by joining several letters together into a new form, similar to the use of an ampersand to mean “and” in English. I have called those forms “alphagrams,” meaning a symbol formed by letters that represents a written word or part of a word. It is only by learning to read the alphagrams that one is able to understand the text of the Textus Receptus. In our next article, we will finish studying the various texts of the Textus Receptus family. We will see how God providentially used those texts to continue to preserve His Word as it had been used by Christians throughout history. They are a part of the unbroken line of textual preservation established and overseen by the Lord.

Where are you in the

Cycle ofObedience

as it relates to theGreat Commission?

LEVEL I - VISIONThis is basic to any goal. “Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he” Proverbs 29:18 (Hab. 2:1-4, Acts 2:16-18). A simple but clarifying definition for vision is: Something God has given you to do from His Word. We know our Lord Jesus Christ gave us the vision for the Great Commission in some formula of words five different times between His resurrection and ascension (Matthew 28:18-20, Mark 16:15, Luke 24:47, John 20:21, Acts 1:8). We may differ on many things, but most all agree that the local church has been given human-wide responsibilities with the gospel. The Great Commission is not a call but a command. The command settles the fact I am to do it; the call deals with the position I occupy while I do it. Let us settle the fact we are to have an active part in world evangelism. That is our God given vision delivered to us from His Son through His Word.

LEVEL II - BURDENThe burden comes out of a vision. A vision lets me see what I am to be doing. The burden comes because I am not doing it. I am not referring here to “a burden for souls” as much as one caused by

knowing we are displeasing the dear Lord Jesus in His vision for the church and its members.

Simply put, I now see what I should have been doing but was not, and I feel a

burden because it grieves Him.

LEVEL III - COMMITMENTOnce I see the vision of what I am to be doing and get a burden because I am not doing it, I make a commitment to Him to get involved at whatever level He assigns for me.

Once again, do not confuse this commitment as being to a place.

That will come later. It is a surrender/commitment to the command of our

Lord. Paul verbalizes it in chapters 9, 22 and 24 of Acts: “Lord, what wilt thou have me

to do?” Isaiah responds to the Lord in chapter 6, “Here am I; send me,” and Samuel in I Samuel

FIRSTBIBLE INTERNATIONAL A MINISTRY OF FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF MILFORD20

Page 21: Unpublished Word Journal - Winter 2012

UNPUBLISHED WORD JOURNAL WINTER 2012 / 21

3 replies, “Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth.” Please note these commitments are to a person, not a place. In fact, Jesus never called a person to a place until He first called them to Himself - a good policy for us to follow.

LEVEL IV - STRATEGYStrategy is the point where I start to look for ways to get involved. It begins with assessing my gifts, talents, gender, age, opportunities, existing responsibilities, etc. This inventory is not to determine if I will get involved but at what level does He wants me to plug in for service. Moses, in Numbers 34, gives what is called the directions for the conquest which we call the Principle of Reduction. He taught the people to individualize their assignment within the cooperative effort and reduce Canaan down into manageable segments without reducing the whole. It was reduced from the national assignment of a nation, to a section for each tribe, and then to a family assignment. When each has done their part, the whole is accomplished. This can also be seen in the Great Commission. A systematic approach to people groups (nations), is seen in the ministry strategy of Paul (Romans 15:20-21, II Corinthians 10:13). A body principle is seen in II Corinthians 12. In industry this is called “division of labor.” Our suggested strategy has three sequential levels: First, establish a prayer ministry for the 6,000 unreached people groups. By owning a world responsibility

and then individualizing the assignment by some adopting a continent, others adopting a country, and still others adopting a nation (people group), it is conceivable we could have all the unreached groups being prayed for daily (Acts 13:1-3). Adding to our prayer plan, we ask churches to adopt a language. Keep in mind there are 12,000 independent Baptist churches in the USA and only 6,000 unreached people groups. It seems our assignment is within reach of collective obedience. Add to the prayer plan and Scripture effort the training of nationals to plant reproducing churches and our God given goal becomes an obtainable objective awaiting only our obedience. This brings me to the final level.

LEVEL V - REALIZATION OF VISIONWhen we get a vision, add a burden, add a commitment and develop a strategy, the next and obvious item is realization of the vision. Does that mean the Great Commission is do-able? Yes! Is that time setting? No! But it is Scriptural (Rev. 5:9, 7:9, Hebrews 10:16, Matthew 28:19-20). What we should worry about is not time setting, but our disobedience to the clear command of our Lord Jesus Christ (God’s Son and God in the flesh) to go into all the world! There will come a time when the world will know the gospel. I do not know the time, but I do know that during my time here I want to add my part to the whole.
