Selection of Courses - African StudiesThe courses listed below are relevant to students ofAfrican Studies and could, with the approval of the specificrequirements of the units involved, be used as coursesto help fulfil degree requirements. There are also oftengraduate courses and 4000-level courses in a number ofunits at Carleton that are offered on an ad hoc basis thathave significant content appropriate to African Studies. Tohave any such course count towards their degree requiresapproval of the Director of the Institute of African Studieswhen it is being offered.

Note: the number of spaces in graduate courses offeredby other departments may be limited, and registration maybe conditional upon obtaining the prior approval of thedepartment concerned. ThesisBUSI 5989 [2.0] M.Sc. Thesis is equivalent to 2.0 creditsand should relate to issues consistent with the generalfocus of the M.Sc. program. The thesis must representthe results of the candidate’s independent researchundertaken after being admitted to graduate studies atCarleton University’s Sprott School of Business. Previouswork of the candidate may be used only as introductory orbackground material for the thesis.

Comprehensive ExaminationsAll Ph.D. candidates are required to successfully completea comprehensive examination. The examination will covermaterial relating to the student's area of specialization,research methodology associated with that area, andseminal and important works in the managementfield. Questions for the examination will be set by thestudent's comprehensive examination committee. Thecomprehensive examination will take place over a periodof two to three weeks and will consist of a written and anoral part.

The comprehensive examinations must be completedsuccessfully before the Ph.D. proposal defense isscheduled. Under normal circumstances, the writtencomprehensive and the oral defense must occur withineight terms of a full-time student's initial registration in thePh.D. program. Part-time students should complete thecomprehensives within sixteen terms of initial registrationin the Ph.D. program. Students who do not fulfil thisrequirement will be asked to withdraw from the program.
