“This is definitely opening up the doors to more

than most people realize...”

- Thilo Koslowski – Analyst @ Gartner Inc.

ENGINEERED

SYSTEMS

There’s a growing discussion regarding use of Unmanned Aerial

Vehicles (UAV’s) “Drones” for item delivery….

With a major online retailer stating 86% of delivered

packages were 5 pounds or less and with an estimated 2

billion total packages having been shipped in 2015….

…..In the not-so-distant-future, there may be thousands of

UAV’s transporting items to/from locations within a

relatively small radius in cities worldwide.

…..really fast item delivery....from placement of an order to when it is received.

…..with many UAV’s have carrying capacities of 5 to 10

pounds and run-times of approximately 30 minutes (flight

radius of approximately 10 miles)….

So In Theory….

What could package transport in the skies accomplish?

…..along with the concept of UAV fleets

used by online retailers, let’s consider how

else UAV delivery may change the way

many things are done today.

ENGINEERED

SYSTEMS

Take for Instance....

A plumber is at a jobsite to replace a specific type of plumbing valve :

…..The plumber checks the inventory within the truck and

discovers….

…..What does the plumber have to do next?

…..the exact replacement valve is not on the truck….

ENGINEERED

SYSTEMS

…..Presently :

..…when the exact valve is located at one of the supply houses, the

plumber jumps in the truck and leaves the jobsite....

The plumber calls around to the area supply houses….

…..The plumber picks-up the

valve....jumps back in the truck to

transport back to the jobsite.…then….

finally.…installs the valve….

Some Consequences:

• Potentially fewer hours to complete other jobs.

• A truck going back-and-forth adding to traffic.

• Pollution & wasted fuel.

Productive Time Wasted

ENGINEERED

…..But with UAV’s….

…..the plumber may find and purchase

the particular valve, either calling around

or via smartphone browsing….

…..the valve is picked up by a UAV and

delivered directly to the plumber’s

jobsite….

Some Results:

• Extra time for completing more jobs.

• A bit less traffic for roads.

• Pollution mitigated (UAV’s are electric & many solar.)

Productive Time Saved for Better Uses

ENGINEERED

SYSTEMS

So What Does This Mean? :

.....Inventory Optimization & Time Savings for everyone….

Result:

• Reduce/eliminate inventory, transport & storage space of items available ‘on-demand.’

• Significantly reduce start-up costs of businesses relying on inventories.

• More time will be available to accomplish other tasks.

…..Buy exactly what you need….when you need it and…. have it

delivered when you want it….

There will be decreasing need for some businesses to maintain inventories

…..no need to carry expensive inventories....it allows everyone to

use the same concept used by manufacturers….”Just-On-Time”

Inventory Optimization….

ENGINEERED

SYSTEMS

…..So Exactly Who Else Could This Help? :

• Construction workforces.

• Restaurants delivery.

• Street vendors.

• First Responders & Rescue Workers.

• People at home.

Those who need to re-supply or need specific items at a jobsite or at home….

ENGINEERED

SYSTEMS

How Else Could This Be A Game Changer? :

• Launch of new markets & business models for ‘on-demand’ services.

• Advancing competitive advantage of online vs. traditional retailers.

• Development of new infrastructure to support UAV operations.

• Reduced local truck use & street congestion.

• Reduction of fuel use & pollution.

With general-use fleets & personal-use UAV’s for delivery AND pick-up service,

we might expect:

ENGINEERED

SYSTEMS

…..And This Is Already Being Tested….

The University of Cincinnati and Workhorse Group Inc.

obtained a Certificate of Authorization from the Federal

Aviation Administration allowing test flights of their

electric powered UAV named “HorseFly.”

(HorseFly is noted to be able to carry

up to 10 pounds, has a top speed of 50

MPH and a flight time of 30 minutes….)

As UAV Technology Advances, Expect Increased Carrying Capacities & Run-Times

ENGINEERED

SYSTEMS

……..Isn’t There A Lot More to Figure Out On This?

……So Stay Tuned for more thoughts on this….

When UAV’s are cleared for general use and are transporting packages for all of us,

an extensive infrastructure, nationwide, will be needed to support reliable & safe

UAV operations.
