The sky’s no longer the limit. A truly versatile propulsion system – SABRE is an air-breathing rocket engine that can propel an aircraft from zero to five times the speed of sound in the atmosphere and 25 times the speed of sound for space access. Highly scalable, this pioneering breakthrough boasts a huge range of operation with the potential to redefine the world of powered flight.

Main Nozzle

Operates in both the atmosphere and in space, reducing weight and complexity

Rocket Engine

Provides thrust to power the engine for space access during rocket mode

Ramjet System

Improves overall engine efficiency by using surplus air to generate extra thrust

Air Compressor

Driven by the energy absorbed in the precooler, enabling runway start and takeoff

Supersonic Intake

Captures and slows the incoming air into the engine and can operate at speeds in excess of Mach 5 before closing for rocket mode

Precooler

Rapidly cools the incoming air (1,000°C to ambient) enabling SABRE to operate at higher speeds than existing engines

Engine Core

Powers SABRE during air-breathing flight. Heat absorbed by the precooler is recycled to power the engine, significantly reducing fuel consumption

Advanced materials designed to withstand extreme temperature conditions

A key component in the development of our ground-breaking SABRE engine – our precooler technology is already transforming what’s possible in the world of heat management.

Combining thousands of thin-walled tubes to provide optimum surface-area-to-weight ratio, each tube is joined to an inlet and outlet manifold to allow coolant to be injected and removed for an extremely efficient and effective cooling process. We are world-leading experts in the development of heat exchanger manufacturing, bonding thousands of joints in a single operation, with zero leakage.

In October 2019, our HTX test programme carried out a ground-level demonstration of the precooler at Mach 5 airflow temperatures. Proving the potential of this innovation at five times the speed of sound marks a significant milestone in the development of SABRE – paving the way for a revolution in hypersonic flight, space access and a wide-array of applied technologies.
