THE HUMAN SAFETY NET5

At Generali, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity for a better life. We wantto extend our engagement beyond our day-to-day business for our clients and be a company acting also for the most vulnerable in our society.

We have brought this promise to life throughThe Human Safety Net, a new global foundationand the flagship initiative for our communities. In 2018, The Human Safety Net was launchedin 18 countries where Generali operates, with three impactful programs, but a single purpose:to unlock human potential.

The Human Safety Net shows our belief thatcompanies have a role to work towards social change and disrupt the status quo. We can do this by working with experts like NGOs and socialworkers, but also by mobilizing our 200,000employees and agents and more than 50 millioncustomers around the world. We want The Human Safety Net to be a movement that brings together these groups to take action.

Most importantly, this initiative is not limitedto Generali alone. We seek out alliances andcollaborations across the private, public and social sector, to maximize our impact. We warmly invite you to join.

First established in Italy in 1831, Generali is among the world’s leading insurers, employing 71,000 people in over 60 countries and serving 57 million customers. As an insurer, Generali’s mission is to protect and enhance people’s lives. Generali launched The Human Safety Net in 2017 in order to extend this effort beyond its day-to-day business, supporting the most vulnerable members of communities where we

live and work, every day, everywhere. The Human Safety Net acts where we believe our efforts can have a meaningful impact on key social issues affecting these vulnerable members and their communities. The three programs - For Families, For Refugee Start-Ups, and For Newborns - target different societal challenges, but share a common purpose:to unlock human potential by inspiringpeople to help people.

GENERALI & THE HUMAN SAFETY NET

Generali is currently creating a global hub for The Human Safety Net in one of its most prized real estate assets, the Procuratie Vecchie on Piazza San Marco (St. Mark’s Square) in Venice. Originally the Procuratie Vecchie was home to the Procuratori di San Marco (St. Mark’s Procurators). The Procuratori were the Venetian republic’s administrators who oversaw various aspects of city life, including caring for disadvantaged people around Venice. This rich history of caring for others

and helping people in difficulty is what makes the Procuratie Vecchie the perfect future home for The Human Safety Net. The fully renovated complex will become The Human Safety Net’s global center. It will serve as a meeting point for social ventures, businesses and leaders, host exhibitions and performances, as well as open a window onto our activities for Venetians and the more than 20 million international visitors who walk beneath the building’s porticoes every year.

A new hub for social innovation

ForFamilies

In 2018, the World Health Organisation, World Bank and UNICEF called for action to make “nurturing care” a reality for all children, to ensure healthy development for everyone. In the high- and middle-income countries where Generali operates, a lack of nurturing care among disadvantaged families is one of the greatest barriers for all children to reach their full potential.

For Families is designed to change this.

The Challenge

The Response

Tackling this challenge in partnership with leading NGOs, The Human Safety Net’s For Families program focuses on prevention. We intervene before irreparable damage is done to children’s development, and in extreme cases before children risk being taken away from their parents. The primary focus is on families at risk, rather than families in crisis.

For Families is The Human Safety Net’s largest program, and aspires to make a significant positive impact in the lives of the mothers, fathers and children it assists. For Families launched in 10 countries by the first half of 2018, and is set to expand into Eastern Europe, South and Southeast Asia, and Latin America next.

The Human Safety Net invests in parenting interventions intended for the most disadvantaged parents – parents who meet at least some of the following risk factors:Living under the poverty line/ Unemployment/ Single Parents/ Underage Parents/ Low educational attainment/ Migrant background.

In order to increase our impact, we look for programs that are transformative, that empower parents in a lasting way over the course of a 6-12 month period, rather than providing ongoing assistance.

We recognize that every family’s needs are different, but we believe in the importance of creating a consistent “package” of services that can be replicated at scale.

We encourage our partners to refine this package over the duration of our partnership and to use group-based interventions rather than one-to-one interactions wherever possible in order to reach as many parents as possible.

ForRefugee Start-Ups

The Challenge

Millions of refugees have arrived in Europe over the past decade, including over two million in Germany, France and Italy alone. Despite widespread assistance efforts, today their situation remains precarious, and at least half continue to live below the poverty line. Without work, it is nearly impossible for these men and women to contribute to improving their communities, themselves and their families.

For Refugee Start-Ups is helping change that.

14THE HUMAN SAFETY NET

FOR REFUGEE START-UPS

The Response

For Refugee Start-Ups empowers refugees to set up their own businesses, promoting entrepreneurship as a viable path to integration and prosperity. The program focuses on a small number of European countries where need is highest: Germany, Italy, France and Turkey. Initial activities were launched in Germany, France and Switzerland. We give refugees a structured program that can help them build their businesses, while at the same time supporting existing entrepreneurs with services that help them formalize and grow their ventures. The Human Safety Net offers a mix of seminar-based training, individual coaching, mentoring, access to finance as well as co-working spaces and a supportive community.

We give refugees a structured program that can help them build their business.

1—> 2 3We believe that refugees have great entrepreneurial potential. The key to unlocking that potential is to provide programs tailored to their needs and help them overcome the barriers impeding their progress.

Our support for aspiring entrepreneurs is split into four phases and organized into a “selective funnel”:

Examples of For Refugee Start-Ups in action:

In France, the first businesses to be realized through the program include a Bangladeshi restaurant and a virtual-reality tourism company.

We start by making people in refugee communities aware of the potential benefits of entrepreneurship.

The first training sessions focus on developing a business idea and understanding what it takes to set up a business in Europe.

Committed participants move on to more intensive (1-2 month) training to help them conduct market research and build a business plan.

4 What people need to qualify:

Full or subsidiary protection under the Geneva Convention.

At least B1 level or higher in the local language (or English).

An initial business idea.

Although the program is competitive, we know not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur. That’s why THSN also offers job search support for refugees both directly (for example through CV-building workshops) andindirectly through partners.

In Germany, Social Impact Lab provides refugees with dedicated spaces and a creative, collaborative environment.

Finally we allocate 6-month supportpackages to themost promisingentrepreneurs,including1-on-1 businesscoaching andinitial financing.

ForNewborns

Asphyxia happens when a newborn infant is deprived of oxygen long enough to cause physical harm (usually to the brain) or death, and is currently a global problem. In Europe alone, asphyxia affects over 20,000 newborns every year, causing 5,000 deaths and leaving many children handicapped for life. In parts of Asia these numbers are much higher, affecting as many as 150,000 newborns each year.

The Human Safety Net for Newborns strengthens health systems to save babies suffering from asphyxia.

The Challenge

18THE HUMAN SAFETY NET

FOR NEWBORNS

The Response

Starting now, the For Newborns program works with local medical communities and parents, raising awareness about the condition, improving prevention efforts and providing access to the best existing treatments.

Prevention. The program will provide health professionals and parents with campaigns and information, to promote awareness of this little known condition.

Detection. Medical teams and nurses are not always properly trained to adequately detect and promptly intervene in the event of asphyxia within six hours from birth. The program aims to organize and promote training, as well as provide tools, to help with the diagnosis and detection of this condition.

Treatment. The best available treatment is called therapeutic hypothermia: using specialised equipment to cool the baby to stop the brain damage from spreading. This equipment is not always available in local hospitals. Adequate transportation to the best-equipped hospital in the region is also important. The program therefore aims to create an efficient ambulance and hospital network so that medical treatment can be activated within the first six, critical hours.
