FEATURE ARTICLES Simon Says WELCOME TO UNLIMITED, Shoreline Church’s exciting, informative and helpful magazine. Unlimited has something for you, no ifs, buts, or maybes. Actually, life can be full of if buts and maybes. If I could just do this or that. This is bound to help but... Maybe I should and maybe I shouldn’t... Things in life that are a ‘100% sure thing’ that we can rely on would seem to be more and more rare. Remember the old saying, ‘you can bank on it,’ well I’m not sure that works so well after the last few years of banking crisis after banking crisis. When we are in a crisis or just sailing through life, having a loving family and dependable friends are an enriching stabilising part of our lives. At Shoreline Church we thank God that there is an unchanging word were we find an eternally dependable friend we can all know. God’s Word is unchanging, His amazing promises to us are eternal and unchangeable and in His son we have an unchanging eternally dependable friend called Jesus. The summer of 2012 almost turned into a new kind of eternity, a sports mania eternity with Euro 2012, Wimbledon and the London Olympics. In this new eternity I discovered Shoreline Church is packed with many world class athletes running the most incredible races. As the apostle Paul writes encouragement to us all to run a faithful race in our own lives, you will see through the pages of Unlimited incredible people running incredible races serving our fantastic community from throughout Shoreline, across our fantastic town and right around the world. If you are new to Shoreline there are many ways you can connect and get involved. Just as people all around the world have dreams of winning an Olympic gold we also have dreams for the future. Eric & Terri Houghton began to dream about launching a new ministry at Shoreline Church called Celebrate Recovery. A dynamic ministry supporting people seeing their hopes, prayer and dreams come true as they overcome hurts, habits and hang ups. In 2011 over 20 Shoreliner volunteers joined Eric & Terri in training and preparation for the launch of this God purposed ministry that had it’s full lunch in 2012. Well done and thank you to everyone involved. I don’t know how your hopes and dreams are doing right now, but I know through the highs and lows life’s journey can take us, our hopes and dreams can fade and even die. I was at a conference recently where I heard a true and powerful statement. “If there is hope in the future, there is power in the present, If there is no hope, there is no power in the moment.” if we lose hope, we lose the power for our dreams because we give up. In Jesus there is always hope. What are you hoping for right now? What are you hoping for today? What are you hoping for in the weeks and months ahead? Realise that great hope we always have access to though Jesus and let that power in the moment return, let that power for the future back in, power to pray and work towards your dreams. ‘Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.’ Romans 15:13. Enjoy Unlimited, our inspiring news, updates, information, events and all. Enjoy your day and the great hope set before us giving power in every moment. Enjoy! Our Mission is to enrich people’s daily lives through the Good News brought by Jesus Christ, through learning together, bible training and building community. Our passion is to love and serve all. We are a Christian Church and charity located in the heart of Southport, Merseyside. We are a member of the Assemblies of God (AOG) group of churches. Shoreline Church serves the local community through providing a place of worship, pastoral care, counselling services, small groups programmes, youth projects, children’s clubs, schools work and community action. We organise fundraising to support local and national charities. We serve our global community through prayer, international partnering and overseas mission programmes. Shoreline Church uses its charitable giving to provide local church ministry and services, support national and international ministry, to help meet the needs of people from all backgrounds. Shoreline Church receives income through charitable giving, fundraising events and grants. Shoreline Church also has a not-for-profit enterprise, Shoreline Extra. Shoreline Extra generates monies to invest directly into developing Shoreline’s work with the poorest in our community. Our MISSION is to enrich people’s daily lives sharing the message of Jesus Christ, discipleship and building community. Our VISION is to love all and serve all. Our core values are as follows: PEOPLE at the heart of everything we do. LOVE is the lifeblood of our Church. UNITY United because we can do greater things when we work together. GENEROSITY Giving generously out of our abundance. SERVING We serve one another, growing in respect and celebrating our uniqueness so that everyone can realise their potential The 1st Emergency Service As a follower and believer of Christ I understand that “The Church” is the 1st emergency service, I say this thoughtfully with the experience I have as a Merseyside Police Traffic Constable. I know that generally the British public see the Police as the 1st emergency service and then after the Police you might consider many others before the Church as worthy of this title such as the Fire or Ambulance Service even the Coast Guard, but the Church as the 1st emergency service how could that be?. In the Traffic Department across the country we see our share of tragedies unfolding on the roads when we answer the call to attend and deal with fatal collisions, this is our duty and our responsibility. As a Christian I see that our nation and the population of it who work for organisations such as the Police and other emergency services much like the British public we faithfully serve, are travelling on a collision course with the Lord as it is written in his word: Hebrews 9:27-28 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. My reason for saying this is because many are not eagerly waiting for him and haven’t had their sin dealt with because we have either forgotten who it is we serve, we don`t know the truth or we don`t believe that all authority in heaven and earth is his and established by him.My responsibility as a servant of God in my position as a Police Constable is made very clear to me in Romans 13:4 which says: ‘The authorities are God’s servants, sent for your good. But if you are doing wrong, of course you should be afraid, for they have the power to punish you. They are God’s servants, sent for the very purpose of punishing those who do what is wrong. The responsibility of the Church, the followers of Christ is also made very clear to us in Matthew 28:18-20 when after his victory through his resurrection Jesus gave the great commission to his followers: ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. When attending these incidents your heart is in your mouth and with that even before you arrive on scene the thoughts of “what if” I don`t get there in time “ what if” I say the wrong thing “what if” I make the wrong move… I have learned through my experience in dealing with these situations to ignore “What if” because I find that “what if” is routed in fear and that fear is the enemy of progress it`s a trap that encourages the mind to convince the individual not to do anything leave it to someone else. What if creates situations that don`t exist and might never appear or happen. What if, fear is a liar that paralyses the individual from doing what needs to be done to save, to perform, to achieve, to reach out and to win victory for others to snatch people from death. What if it would be easier just not to answer the call, look the other way and not to get involved who would know? What if you were the only person that could save an individual, offer that person hope, talk them around give them an alternative? What if you were in the right place at the right time to reach out to help and save but you failed to answer the call it was easier to look or walk the other way. What if you had the answer that would make the difference bring hope and light into the mind of that person and bring to them a new reality removing the lie that they have wrongly believed. Could you imagine a member of the Police, Fire, Ambulance or Coast Guard failing to respond to save a person given all the training and equipment they posses and in addition to this the access to other resources and organisations who are equally trained and equipped to offer support to deal with almost any situation. What would you think “What If !!” you called out for help and no one came! The emergency services in our nation are there to protect and preserve life, to turn out and answer the call to save what is temporary. The value we place on life, life that is temporary, is priceless when you consider all that is provided, even to protect and save the lives of those who want to end their own. These services according to the bible in Romans 13, are the provision of God and many who work in them don`t even know it or recognise him as the Boss. Psalm 107 puts it like this: ‘LORD, help! they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He sent out his word and healed them, snatching them from the door of death.’ How much more so is the responsibility of the Church when our work is to save the souls of men woman and children, through the simple act of sharing of the Good News of Jesus Christ, what could be more important the temporary or the eternal? I believe that both are important simply because they are connected one to the other, as we will be judged according to what we have done with our lives and if we believed in Jesus Christ who came to save the souls of men simply through the act of believing in him. Did we as believers having heard the message that saved us enter out onto the ledge of life and death and reach out to others as Christ did for us. Psalm 107 again says: ‘Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever. Has the LORD redeemed you? Then speak out! Tell others he has redeemed you from your enemies.’ Jesus answered the call to come and save he offered his life as a sacrifice for ours he died in our place giving up everything to win the greatest victory of all in order to be the answer to appease God`s wrath he became sin for us obedient even unto death. His death wasn`t a suicide, it wasn`t murder Jesus said in the gospel of John 10:17-18 ‘The Father loves me because I sacrifice my life so I may take it back again. No one can take my life from me. I sacrifice it voluntarily. For I have the authority to lay it down when I want to and also to take it up again. For this is what my Father has commanded.’ As a member of the body of Christ (Church) I have a responsibility as we all do, to enter into training, to be changed, transformed and to answer the call of God to go out and win some, to share the truth of the Gospel of Christ, Romans 10:14-17 puts it like this: ‘But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!” But not everyone welcomes the Good News, for Isaiah the prophet said, “LORD, who has believed our message?” So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ. What if Jesus looked the other way or chose to ignore the call the need of mankind heading towards a lost eternity, Jesus didn`t and as my example my leader my God, how could I turn and look the other way when all around us are people stood on the edge of eternity ready to jump, ignorant of the truth. The bible says in Revelations 21:8 ‘But cowards, unbelievers, the corrupt, murderers, the immoral, those who practice witchcraft, idol worshipers, and all liars—their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulphur. This is the second death.’ Yes we can all experience fear that is to be cowardly in our responsibility to share Christ with others , even Christ experienced fear in the garden of Gethsemane when he prayed and sweat blood before he suffered the agonising death of the cross, Luke 22:41-44 ‘He walked away, about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, “Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” Then an angel from heaven appeared and strengthened him. He prayed more fervently, and he was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood. “Father if it is possible take this cup from me” Jesus’ heart was in his mouth when he said “ Your will be done not mine” what a Hero! Today you will walk past people in the street, stood at the till in the supermarket, sit next to them on the bus or say hello as you walk up the garden path to your neighbour, people who need rescuing will you answer the call to save as part of the 1st emergency service or will you look the other way, what excuse will you make not to answer the call to save! There is a TV show where the CEOs of large companies agree to disguise themselves to live and work amongst their employees after which the unknowing employees go and visit the head office and meet the Boss who came walked worked and lived with them without them recognising who he was, what a surprise!! Many are then rewarded because of the way that they represented the Boss and the company they represented. In our nation today in organisations such as the Government Police, Fire Service and the Church the name of our Boss The CEO who as Roman 13 says is the one who has established all Authority, God being Jesus, his name is so often misused by word and action as we fail to answer the call and honour him in our duty to serve. When all is revealed about our lives our service will we be found wanting will we be left saying What If, or shall we say together Father Your Will Be Done! Sometimes that can mean a challenge against the injustices they face, sometimes just a shoulder to lean on, but always looking to enhance life skills and life opportunities.”

Shoreline Housing is part of the incredibly active Shoreline Church and will continue to develop its community work with the poor and disen-franchised of Southport.

SHORELINE FOODBANK

THE SHORELINE FOOD BANK (foodaid) is an amazing

ministry which helps vulnerable people going through hard

times. The people we minister to are not just homeless, but

also CAP clients, GP tenants, single parents, in other words

anyone who needs help. Today Shoreline church is feeding

up to 150 people a week over 5 days. With thanks to the local

rotary club, local business, and a great team of volunteers

who go above and beyond to see needs met. People are

turning back to the church for the source of help. If you can

help in any way either as a volunteer or provide food for our

food ‘bin’ then please let us know.

GET CONNECTED

Newcomer’s Welcome

THE NEWCOMERS’ WELCOME is a free lunch with a short presentation, and a great way to learn more about Shoreline Church, who we are and what we do. We host the lunch every quarter (on Sunday after main service). It is an

opportunity to meet other new attendees and to meet with the Pastor and some of the Leadership Team over an informal (but fantastic) lunch. It is a kind of ‘Open-day’, to get to know one another better! We believe that Christianity offers the most fulfilling life experience you will ever hope for. We hope that being connected to Shoreline Church will be a part of that fulfillment! We look forward to seeing you at the next event. Jill Westfield <[email protected]>

Family Meal

THE SHORELINE FAMILY MEAL is a great way of catching up with the wider church ‘family’ over a sunday lunch. On the first Sunday of every month a team of volunteers prepare a free buffet-style lunch. The Bible talks so much about gathering together and God (through Jesus) was very much at the centre of many meals and banquets taking place. ‘Church’ is not just what happens between 11:00 - 12:30, but it is everything we do; come along, socialise and get connected. Rose Foulds <[email protected]>

Alpha Course

ALPHA IS FOR PEOPLE searching for answers to questions about life: Why am I here? What is the meaning of life? What happens when I die? Alpha is an opportunity for anyone to explore the basics of the Christian faith. The course runs for 8-10 weeks. The format comprises weekly sessions with a three-course meal, a themed presentation and followed by informal discussion groups. The setting is informal and you will have opportunity to interact and share your thoughts in the discussion groups or you can just sit back and listen. Did you know some 17 million people have signed up to Alpha Courses at churches all over the world? Alpha is an insightful and thought-provoking course and Shoreline Church is privileged to offer this Christ-centred programme. Lesley & Darren Fisher

We have 3 worship leaders and lead on a rota basis. We practice on a Tuesday evening, every fortnight and early on Sunday mornings, prior to the main service. Helena Tucker <[email protected]>

Key Leaders

KEY LEADERS is our leadership initiative at Shoreline. Thank you to all the Key Leaders that have invested their time into these evenings together. This year we have had some exciting new developments to some of our Key Leadership events. Our July date moved to a Saturday, as we also hosted church leaders from all over the North West for a great

day of ministry and leadership development. Our guest speaker for the day was Grayson Jones, lead pastor of an exceptional church in Doncaster, International City Church (www.internatioanlcity church.com). Our Vision night in Sep will be a great time to connect and be inspired as we look ahead while growing in passion and faith as we advance together. Andrew Cunningham <[email protected]>

you to be able to relax in a great atmosphere, with comfy seating, good music and delicious coffee. We also have a designated space for kids! Contact Shoreline Office for dates of next CH Open Morning. Marta Bukat <[email protected]>

Children’s Creche (0-4y)

CRÈCHE offers an opportunity for parents and carers to meet one other in a relaxed environment where the kids can be noisy. The

recent upgrades have improved the look and feel of Creche and includes audio-visual link to the main hall, to keep track of the main service. We have a number of young parents and would encourage you to promote the Creche. Jill Westfield <[email protected]>

Helping Hands

HELPING HANDS works together with the welcome team to help Sunday Services and other events run smoothly. During the Sunday Service, Helping Hands has around 16 different roles to fill, from welcoming you as soon as you step into the building, showing you to an empty seat, serving communion, taking up the tithes and offerings during the service. Behind the scenes, we set up chairs, put envelopes on seats and pick up any leaflets and rubbish left after the service. These may seem like simple roles,

but they are vitally important to the running of each Sunday morning service, as well as various different events. Each member of the team is committed to helping each individual that works through the door, and to make them

feel welcome and are ready to serve your every need. Jill Westfield <[email protected]>

Cleaning Team

In our home, our work place, almose where ever we go, we know the vital job that needs to be done consistently, that fantastic word CLEANING. How grateful we are that we have five cleaning teams that faithfully serve us all in cleaning our ‘home’ - Shoreline Church. It is as though Angels from Heaven arrive every week making windows sparkle, surfaces gleam and as though the carpet is newly laid because the hovering is so good. But no, it is not Angels that give our church that wonderful appearance, but people like you and me that give just that 1 hour every five weeks. There is something great in working together, and something mighty in giving ourselves to God.

Admin/ Operations

THE BIBLE tells us clearly that Jesus came to serve, not be served... our new contacts database system exists to serve everyone, new and old, at Shoreline. Our new system will help Shoreline to give a better level are care and connection. From someone coming to faith to sending people out into the mission field we want to see our discipleship, pastoral care, connection and communication be all it can be and admin. support helps towards these goals. We are continually seeing through God’s blessing and favour. Becky Parkinson <[email protected]>

GHDs (God’s Heavenly Divas)

GHDs is an absolutely fabulous ladies’ ministry which enables us to have fun and learn how the Bible teaches us to be a Christian woman. GHDs is a fun social event with a variety of activities. Every time you can expect something new and original - a great time to relax, meet new friends and enjoy catching up with ‘old’ ones. There is always a great crowd to get along with and God’s message to top it off to encourage you in your every day walk with God. Mandy Babbage <[email protected]>

BENCH (Men’s ministry)

BENCH is Shorelines men’s ministry which takes places quarterly. We look to make the nights fun and interactive and always eat together. We also aim to bring a specific challenge through a testimony, Bible teaching or an activity to empower us to be more like the men that God created us to be. At the last Bench we had two from Liverpool called Peter Wynn and Darren Moss who gave their testimonies about their time involved with gangs in Merseyside and how they encountered God and their lives were transformed. We believe that we change lives when we pray. CHURCHES TOGETHER Prayer time is on Tuesdays from 7.30-8.30am, many churches in the town come

together to pray each Tuesday morning. It is exciting to pray for our town together and wonderful to experience the unity together. 24 HOUR PRAYER. 4th February 16th May and 15th September were our last quarterly 24hr prayer

Celebrate Recovery

AT THE HEART OF CELEBRATE RECOVERY we have an internationally tried and tested programme, which is both practical and Biblical. It has at its centre the Lord Jesus Christ. This programme has been instrumental in liberating and healing thousands of people; helping them to find a new life worth living. We are convinced that Celebrate Recovery can do the same for everyone who sincerely works through the 12 steps with honest commitment. We know that it is the desire of the Lord Jesus Christ that we should all have wholeness, happiness and peace in Him, and we sincerely hope that people will find this to be their personal experience. You do not have to attend the church to be on the course; invite someone along! Eric & Terri Houghton <[email protected]>

YOUTH & CHILDREN

Shoreline Kids (4-11y)

WE RECOGNISE how amazing and valuable every child is and at Shoreline Kids we want to help nurture the next generation and to give our children the opportunity to learn of God’s

amazing love for us. Whether you are a child, an adult or a parent God knows each of us inside-out and has plans and purposes for each of us. And that includes you! Our programme involves teaching the Bible and includes reading, acting, singing, games, crafts and quizzes. Pray for this vital area of church ministry, to bless the children and to help the leaders to be passionate and inspired. If you enjoy working with children volunteer to join our team. Linda Cunningham <[email protected]>

Shoreline Cellar (11-16y)

The Youth Team is passionate, dedicated and our aim is to create a fun, positive atmosphere at all of our programs where young people can make friends, learn, express themselves, develop and grow relationally, educationally, physically and spiritually. But we also aim to create a safe and secure environment where young people are cared for and supported. We organise special events which all the young people are invited to such

as our OVERNIGHT YOUTH RETREAT and SOUL SURVIVOR, where this year many of the youth made commitments to follow God! Support our work in prayer. David Traxler <[email protected]>

SASW Schools Work (11-16y)

SOUTHPORT AREA SCHOOLS WORK contributes to the educational, moral and spiritual development of young people by working in partnership with teachers, youth leaders and other schools workers. In 2012 we welcomed Jo Dowsett onto the team to bring Admin. support. Her input has been very valuable and it has helped to make things work better and run more smoothly. We are gearing up to launch a Pais team (www.paisproject.com) in Southport this Autumn. We hope to have a team of four people working in the local areas. Ian Sarginson <[email protected]>
