    ThuswemightsaythatCrowleyreallyepitomizeswhatFoucaultcallsthe"repressivehypothesis"thatis,thebeliefthatthemodernWesternworldhaspainfullyrepressedanddeniedsexuality,andthatwhatismostneedednowisthefullestaffirmationandliberationofthesexualinstinct.AsCrowleyhimselfputitinhisConfessions,"Mysexuallifewasveryintense...LovewasachallengetoChristianity.Itwasadegradationanddamnation."[33]YetasFoucaultpointsout,itisreallyinaccuratetosaythattheVictorianerawasoneofrepressionandsilenceaboutsex.Onthecontrary,Westernculturewasinfactsaturatedwithakindof"hyperdevelopmentofdiscourseaboutsexuality,"whichwasnowclassifiedandcategorizedinendlessdetail."Paradoxically,itwasduringthenineteenthcenturythatthedebateaboutsexualityexploded.Farfromtheageofsilenceandsuppression,sexualitybecameamajorissueinVictoriansocialandpoliticalpractice."[34]Thecategorization,classificationandcontroloversexualitywasacriticalelementintheregulationofsocietyasawhole:"Thearrayofsexualdiscourses...exploitedsexuality'ssecrets.Sexbegantobemanaged....perversionbecamecodified...Sexualityproliferatedaspoweroveritwasextended."[35]

    However,asPeterGaypointsout,discussionsofsexualityhadtotakeplaceinthepropercontexts,eitherprivately,intheclosedrealmsofsecrecyor,publicly,throughscientificdiscourse.[36]TheVictorianera,infact,witnessedatremendousproliferationofmedicaltreatisesonsexuality,inbothitsproperandperverseforms.Viewinganydeviationfrom"normal"sexasmorallysuspect,theVictorianimaginationwasobsessedwiththeidentification,enumerationandscientificclassificationofeveryimaginablesexualaberration.AmongthemostpopularworksinlatenineteenthcenturyEnglandwasKrafftEbing'sPsychopathiaSexualis(1886)whichbecamethemostinfluentialcatalogueofdeviations.Undertheprotectivecoverof"medicalnomenclature"andwiththe"postureofmoraloutrage,"Victorianreaders"couldindulgeinthis'medicoforensic'peepshowofsexualhyperaesthesia,paresthesia,aspermia,polyspermia,spermatorrhea,sadism,masochism,festishism,exhibitionism,psychichermaphroditism,satyriasisandnymphomania."[37]

    Amongthemostsinisterperversions,intheeyesofmanyVictorianauthors,werethosethatconfusedthereligiousandsensualspheres.Britishmiddleandupperclasssensibilitiesofthelate19thcenturyinsistedontheproperseparationofreligionandsexuality:excessivereligiouscelibacyandsexuallicentiousnesswerebothconsidereddestructiveperversions.Onlythemarriedlifeofferedtheviamediabetweencelibacyandlicentiousness,which"repairstheFallandleadsfromearthtoheaven."[38]Inanerathatvaluedeconomicproductivity,generationofcapitalandrestraintinconsumption,healthysexualityhadtobeuseful,productiveandefficient:"normalheterosexualityappearedinoneguise...attractionbetweenmenandwomenthatledtomarriageandfamily.NormalsexwasconsistentwiththevaluesofVictorianindustrialsocietyitwasanothermodeofproduction."[39]Thusthemostphysicallyandmorallydangerousofallactswerethe"nonproductive"actssuchasmasturbationandhomosexualintercourse.AsLesleyHallobserves,masturbationwas"reprobateduniversallythroughoutVictoriansociety,"andconsideredapossiblesourcenotjustofmoraldecaybutevenofepilepsyandinsanity.Sotoo,homosexualitywasforemostamongthoseactsseentoviolatethe"bordersofmasculinity"definedbymiddleclasssociety,andthusamongthegreatestthreatstoaproductive,efficientandhealthysocialbody.[40]
