Dr. Michelle Friend Assistant Professor

University of Nebraska Omaha

Michelle Friend is an Assistant Professor in the Teacher Education Department at the University of Nebraska Omaha. Her research focuses on equity in computer science, particularly young women’s interest in computing careers from middle school through adulthood, and on interdisciplinary connections between computer science and other disciplines to enhance learning in each. She received her Ph.D. from Stanford University Graduate School of Education in Learning Science

and Technology Design, and holds a Master of Information Science and Bachelors of Biochemistry and Science Education degrees from Indiana University. She previously taught computer science at The Girls’ Middle School in Mountain View, CA, and was the first female president of the Computer Science Teachers Association.

Step away from the Star Trek poster and other advice from education research

Education research often seems far removed from classroom practice and is written in academic language that further complicates understanding how to use it. This presentation will walk through “A Day in the Classroom” and how to support student learning and engagement from the moment students enter until they leave, all based on high-quality research. Although most examples will be based in computing classrooms, most of the ideas apply across all subject areas and grade levels.

Risingtothischallengeisaworthygoalbecausedoingsofulfillsourmissiontopersonalizeinstructionandhelpeachchildexperiencesuccess.However,whenthetheoryofprovidingasystemofinterventionsisputintopractice,logisticalgapsandbarrierspreventprogressintheseareas:1)conductingefficientmeetingswithmeasurablegoals2)communicatingamong(elementary)staffbetweengradeleveltransitions,3)communicatingamong(secondary)staffbetweendepartments,4)organizingandsharingawidevarietyofformsanddata,and5)communicatingamongfederally-fundedprogramsregardingeligibility(i.e.TitleIandSpecialServices).ThesepitfallsareaddressedandavoidedintheInterventionWorksweb-basedapplication,whichwascreatedbyacurrentNebraskaSchoolPrincipal,BenKreifels.
