Strategic partnership between University of York; City of York; Yorkshire Forward (Regional

Development Agency); business Endorsed by UK Government – five further Science Cities

named to develop and exploit the model elsewhere Aims to maximise economic impact of University through

aligning University, government and business activities to support the development of the knowledge economy around the University – the “Triple Helix” model

Created 100 new companies and 3,000 new jobs in initial phase

Current activities include: Cluster development (Bioscience; IT & digital; Creative;

Business Services; Environmental) Draw-down of regional, national and EU funds for development

of innovation infrastructure (eg £25+m of ERDF funding) Re-development of mining site with UK Coal for biorenewables

investors; local, regional and national government 8.4 hectare site adjacent to University Anchor tenant: Smith & Nephew Global R&D HQ 3 incubator buildings: Innovation Centre;

Biocentre; IT Centre – total 10,000 sq metres Now built-out

Total of 27,000 sq metres of office and lab space 96 companies and 1,490 employees
