Course Description: Thiscourseexploresthetheoreticalandpracticalfoundationsofconflicttransformationandpeacebuilding.Attentionwillbegiventoarangeofmethods,skills,andframeworksforworkingwithconflicttoadvancepositivegoalssuchassocialequity,nonviolentchange,restorativejustice,andreconciliation,bothincommunitysettingsandinlarger-scaleconflictsituations.
Course Objectives/Expectations/Requirements: UponcompletingPACS605studentsshouldbeableto:

• discusskeygoalsandvaluesofconflicttransformation,withparticularattentiontosocialequity,nonviolentchange,andreconciliation;

• describethenatureandscopeofpeacebuildingpractice;
• discussapplicationsofconflicttransformationandpeacebuildingatvariouslevelsofhumaninteraction,frominterpersonalandintergrouptointernationalandglobal;

20%ClassDiscussionLeadership(10%foreachoftwoclasses):Eachofyouwillbeassignedtoagroupof3or4.Fortwospecifiedclasses,yourgroupwillberesponsibletoleadtheclassdiscussionontheassignedreadingsforthoseweeks.Eachofyouwillsynthesizeandhighlightimportantpointsfromthereadings,providingsomeintellectualanalysisandpersonalcommentaryorinterpretationofthem.Asagroup,youwillprovideashortlistofquestions(2-4)forfurtherdiscussion.Handoutssummarizingbothkeypointsanddiscussionquestionsareexpected.Inthisway,yourgroupwill“re-introduce”otherstudentstothereadingsearlyintheclasssessionandsetthestageforfurtherdiscussion.Eachpresenterwilltakeabout5minutesfortheirinitial“re-introduction”section(20minutestotal).Presentersshouldconsultcarefullytoensurethatthegroupasawholefullycoverstheassignedmaterial.Prof.Ballmaythenexplorekeytopicsinfurtherdetail,afterwhich,timewillbesetasideforclassdiscussion,basedasmuchaspossibleonsomeofthequestionsyourgrouphasprepared.Inthesecondhalfoftheterm,yourgroupwillberesponsiblefortheOpeningandClosingoftheCircle,aswellasthecheck-inround.Yourgroupwillbeevaluatedonthefollowingcriteria:clarityofdelivery,coverageofreadings,valuefordiscussion,originalinsightorcreativity,valueofhandout,timemanagement.30%WeeklyReflectiveResponse:Asignificantaspectoflearninginthiscoursewilltakeplacethroughclassdiscussions,manyofwhichwillhappeninaCircleformat.Asameansofevaluatingbothyourparticipationinthecourse,yourunderstandingsofthereadings,andyourlearningprocess,youwillwriteaweeklyreflectiveresponse.Followingeachclass,submita200-300wordresponsetothequestion,“Howhavetheclassdiscussionschangedyourinitialunderstandingofthereadings?Makedirectreferencestothereadings.”ThistemplateispostedonLEARNandshouldbesubmittedtotheappropriatedropboxeachweekbymidnightonSaturday.30%PeacebuildingStrategyProject(25%forapaper+5%forapresentation):Thisprojectincludesa2500-3000wordpaper(doublespaced,11or12ptfont)andashort,5-minutepresentation.Asapeacebuildingstrategyproject,itwillinvolve“prospectivethinking”toformulateanintegrativestrategyforsustainableconflicttransformationefforts,tailoredtofitaparticularcontextandmakeuseofavailableresourcesaseffectivelyaspossible.Thisstrategyshoulddrawuponapplicableconceptsfromthroughouttheterm(weeks1through11),andshouldproposeactivitiesthat1)areresponsivetothedeeperrootsofconflict,and2)contributetowardsacoherentvisionforchange.Studentsmaychoosefromawiderangeofconflictscenarios.
Eachstudentwillsubmittheirpaper(viadropboxonLEARN),dueatthebeginningofclassonApril4th(Week12),andgivethepresentationtotheclassonthesamedate.
