YOUR FIRST YEAR | KINESIOLOGY

| 1

We understand that the

best way to learn anatomy

is through hands-on

examination of the human

body, using real human

specimens. We’re one

of the first non-medical

schools in Canada to house

a School of Anatomy, and

as a first-year student,

you’ll get the unique

opportunity to investigate

the musculoskeletal

system in our human

anatomy laboratory.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE COURSES YOU’LL TAKE IN YOUR FIRST YEAR:

FUNDAMENTALS OF KINESIOLOGY LAB

Develop a solid foundation and practical measurement skills in the tests that measure cardiovascular function, neuromuscular function, and body composition.

HUMAN ANATOMY LAB

Using pre-dissected human cadavers, examine anatomy of the limbs, back, and central nervous and cardiovascular systems. Learn how muscles, nerves, and bones are involved in movement at the joints.

SAMPLE FALL-TERM SCHEDULEYour class schedule will be unique to you, but this sample can give you a sense of what your week could look like.

> Attend social events organized by the Applied Health Sciences Undergraduate Members (AHSUM) – the AHS student society.

> Meet an upper-year mentor through the weCONNECTu mentorship program.

> Get to know your professors by volunteering in their labs.

> Help with UW WELL-FIT – a group exercise program for individuals undergoing cancer treatment.

> Join a student club or campus recreation team.

> Visit the Centre for Career Action – their advisors can help you develop your résumé, find summer job opportunities, and prepare for a career after graduation.

MACK

In high school, Mack enjoyed both science and sports, so our strong

focus on science and human movement was the perfect fit. The

hands-on assessment experience he gained in labs and classes helped

him secure early acceptance to a Doctor of Chiropractic program,

and has set him up for his dream career as a chiropractor.

WHAT IS A LAB, ANYWAY?At Waterloo, a lab is the experiential component

of a course. It’s your opportunity to apply the

knowledge you’re learning in the classroom.

In Kinesiology, our lab class size is typically 15 to 20 students. The room is often divided into workstations, with smaller groups of 4 or 5 students at each station. Our labs are taught by full-time lab instructors and may also include teaching assistance from upper-year undergraduate students and graduate students.

You’ll learn how to use state-of-the art equipment and graduate with experience administering the physical tests that are used in clinical settings. Some of the labs you’ll take include:

FUNDAMENTALS OF KINESIOLOGY LAB

Gain experience with administering physical analysis and assessment techniques in the human components of movement, flexibility, muscular strength and endurance, and the cardiovascular system.

FUNDAMENTALS OF NEUROSCIENCE

Learn the basic structure and function of the nervous system as it relates to the control of movement and behaviour. Assessments include balance control, reaction times, motor learning, and electromyography (EMG), the measurement of electrical activity produced by skeletal muscles.

BIOMECHANICS OF HUMAN ACTIVITY

Understand human activity from a biomechanical perspective. Analyses include rigid link segment models, centre of mass measurement, and the effects of forces on human motion.

PHYSIOLOGICAL AND METABOLIC RESPONSES AND ADAPTATIONS TO EXERCISE

Use physical assessment and measurement to understand the physiological and metabolic responses of the body to exercise and how the body adapts to exercise training. Gain experience in the administration of common assessment techniques such as VO2 max and Wingate testing.

You’ll be learning in

a new anatomy lab

and state-of-the art

teaching labs in our

56,000 square-foot

Applied Health Sciences

expansion building.

Hands-on experience

is an important part of

our Kinesiology program.

It’s what sets us apart.
