University of Siena

The University of Siena is one of Europe’s oldest Universities.

Since its foundation on December 26 1240, the year when the Podestà of Siena signed the first document testifying the existence of a Studium financed by the local authority, its history has been closely linked to that of the town, which has always shared a strong international vocation, promoting international agreements and cooperation.

THE HISTORY

Today, with over 760 years of history, the

University of Siena is a vanguard in the national and international scene

with a vast choice of degree courses in Siena

and in the other University centres of Arezzo and Grosseto.

From the 13th century Siena was an important

international economic and artistic centre: its merchants and bankers kept close ties

with the most important European commercial centres.

Siena is a city with a population of approximately 60,000.

It is located in the centre of Tuscany, and it is one of the Italian cities which has best preserved its artistic, historical, architectural and cultural heritages.

For its particular layout and the way it is inserted into the town, the University of Siena has often been compared to a campus.

In Siena, the campus is the town itself: the University lives within the urban fabric, is an integral part of it, shares its being in a temporal and spatial sense.

This is testified by the vast calendar of entertainment, theatre and self managed

activities (PAROLE&Musica) and by the presence of the University chorus, the

theatrical company, and Facoltà di Frequenza, the University radio station.
