He was a well-known educator, author, lecturer, and book collector. Bizzell's primary and secondary education, directed by a private tutor, was followed by a distinguished university career. He attended Baylor University (B.S., 1898; Ph.D., 1900; LL.D., 1919), Illinois College of Law (LL.M, 1911; D.C.L., 1912), the University of Chicago (M.A., 1913), and Columbia University (Ph.D., 1921). In 1941, Dr. Bizzell received Columbia University's Medal for Excellence. In 1910, Bizzell was appointed President of the College of Industrial Arts in Texas, after teaching in various Texas schools. He became President of Texas A&M in 1914 and President of the University of Oklahoma in 1924. He retired in 1941, and was President Emeritus and Chairman of the Sociology Department until his death on May 13, 1944 in Norman, Oklahoma. During his tenure as the University of Oklahoma president, the first doctorates were granted, the size of the student body doubled, the University Press was established and many new buildings, including the library, were constructed. Bizzell's impressive collection of rare Bibles is now found in the University Library, which was named the William Bennett Bizzell Memorial Library in his honor, December 14, 1949. Collection Description: This collection contains correspondence, other manuscripts and publications, most of which dates from the late 1930's and 1940's. The correspondence is divided by decade, the bulk of which is from the years 1940-1945. Consequently, those years of correspondence have been divided into five categories.

Personal - includes correspondence relating to Bizzell's business and personal interests, Drury College board of Trustees, the Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka, New York University Hall of Fame, Bizzell's publications, Bizzell's recommendations of others, and his retirement and later death, etc.

2. Invitations 3. Official - includes correspondence dealing with his honor classes, the Department of

Sociology, etc. 4. Organizations - including churches, political parties, Greek letter societies, etc. 5. Personalities - prominent businessmen, politicians, university presidents, and military men. The other manuscripts are divided into five sections. 1. Personal - including material from the Federal Home Loan Bank System. 2. Articles, speeches, and lectures - notes and typed manuscripts of over two hundred of Dr.

Bizzell's articles, speeches and lectures, as well as book reviews and the manuscript of his book, The Changing Intellectual Climate.

3. Class notes - taken by Dr. Bizzell as a college student. 4. Official - relating to The University of Oklahoma. 5. Sociology Department materials The publications section consists of many pamphlets and a few small books, as well as printed copies of some of Dr. Bizzell's articles. The outsized boxes contain a few maps, newspapers and hundreds of clippings about Bizzell, the University of Oklahoma, including many on the State Senate's investigation of the university, as well as other subjects representative of Bizzell's wide range of interests.
