2018 North Alabama Stats of NoteCHRISTIAN LOPEZ . . . * In his first game at North Alabama, junior quarterback Christian Lopez threw for 350 yards (24-of-43) and three touchdowns and rushed for 105 yards (15 carries) and a touchdown to lead the Lions to a 34-30 road win over defending Big Sky Champion Southern Utah.* The 350 yards that Lopez threw for in the 2018 season-opener is the most yards any UNA quarterback has thrown for in a season opening game and is also the most yards by any Lion quarterback in their first game at North Alabama.* With the game on the line in the fourth quarter against Southern Utah and North Alabama trailing both times, Lopez led the Lions on touchdown drives of 97 and 75 yards to win the game.

CHANDLER CARRERA . . . * UNA senior kicker Chandler Carrera has made 16 of his last 18 field goal attempts after going 0-for-3 in the Lions’ 2017 season-open-er. He made two of three attempts in the 2018 season-opener and the other hit the left upright on a 45-yard attempt. He also made his only attempta at Alabama A&M. His career long kick is 39 yards.

OFFENSE . . . * Against Southern Utah in the season-opener, North Alabama scored on three of its first four offensive possessions of the season with two field goals and a touchdown. The Lions did not punt in the first half of that game and punted only four times on 13 possessions. * North Alabama is perfect in the Red Zone this season with four scores in four attempts. * North Alabama scored on its first offensive possession of the season with a seven-play, 62-yard drive for a field goal.

REDSHIRT RECEPTIONS . . . * North Alabama had 24 pass completions in its season-opener at Southern Utah and 19 of those receptions were by players who were redshirted at UNA in 2017. Dexter Boykin led the way with eight for 135 yards, followed by Jakobi Byrd with six for 95, Andre Little with three for 59 and Cortez Hall with two for 14. The redshirts accounted for 303 of UNA’s 350 receiving yards. * At Alabama A&M, the redshirts combined for 12 catches for 116 yards and two TDs.

EVERYTHING IS A FIRST . . . * As North Alabama proceeds through the 2018 season, all of the Lions team and individual accomplishments will be firsts in the pro-gram’s FCS era. That makes Christian Lopez the first 100-yard rusher for UNA in the FCS (105 yards on 15 carries) and Dexter Boykin the first 100-yard receiver (8 catches for 135 yards). Chandler Carrera’s field goal against Southern Utah was UNA’s first score of the new era and the two-yard TD run by Lopez was the Lions’ first TD, etc.

NO TAKE-AWAYS FOR UNA DEFENSE IN THE OPENER . . . * North Alabama’s defense has annually ranked among the best team’s in the nation in generating turnovers but the Lions could not cre-ate a take-away in the season-opener at Southern Utah. From 2007-2017, UNA ranked in the Top 20 schools in Division II in intercep-tions, three times in fumbles recovered and six times in turnover margin. * The UNA defense got its first take-away of 2018 in the closing seconds of the Alabama A&M game when K.J. Smith picked off a Bull-dog pass to preserve a 25-20 UNA win. * UNA’s defense generated 25 turnovers in 10 games last season and 36 in 13 games in 2016.

HIGH ALTITUDE PUNTING . . . * UNA sophomore punter Joe Gurley obviously enjoyed the high altitude (5,846 feet) of Eccles Coliseum as he punted foru times for 47.5 average with a long punt of 54 yards. He was also consistent with punts of 44, 54, 49 and 43 yards.

UNA 25, Alabama A&M 20September 8, 2018 - Louis Crews Stadium, Huntsville, Alabama

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Holding a slim 18-17 lead at halftime, the University of North Alabama defense held Alabama A&M to just three points in the second half and the Lions held on for a dramat-ic 25-20 win at Louis Crews Stadium in the first meeting between the two schools since 1997. North Alabama scored a touchdown on its first possession and led until there were just over three minutes left in the third quarter when the Bulldogs went on top 20-18. The Lions regained the lead after a fumble recovery led to a 30-yard touchdown pass from Christian Lopez to Jakobi Byrd with 13:46 left in the game. A&M had three possessions late in the fourth quarter but UNA’s defense responded each time. UNA defensive back K.J. Smith intercepted A&M’s Trevon Walters on the final possession and returned it 48 yards. The Lions then took a knee to run out the clock. The game was played in front of a crowd of 15,100. Jeron Jones pulled in a four-yard pass from Ageel Glass and Spencer Corey’s PAT closed the gap to 8-7 at 3:04 of the first quarter. The Lions went the length of the field on their second pos-session as well with Lopez scoring on a one-yard run. Chandler Carrera’s PAT pushed UNA’s lead to 15-7 with 14:19 remaining in the half. Alabama A&M again responded with a 10-play, 65-yard drive with Isaiah Bailey scoring from two yards out on a pass from Glass. Corey’s kick made it 15-14 with 10:44 left in the half. North Alabama scored on its third straight possession but this time it was directed by freshman Rett Files. The drive ended on a 24-yard Carrera field goal that made it 18-14 at 6:15 of the second quarter. A&M got a 25-yard field goal from Corey with just 28 seconds left in the half to make it 18-17 at the half. The Bulldogs took their first lead of the game on their first possession of the second half, marching from their own 13 yard line to the UNA two before having to settle for a field goal. Corey booted a 19-yard field goal that put A&M on top 20-18 with 3:25 left in the third quarter. The North Alabama defense came up with a key play early in the fourth quarter when Maurice Burton forced a fumble and UNA’s Brady Owensby recovered at the Lions’ 49 yard line. UNA Head Coach Chris Willis

CHRIS WILLISHead Coach

After helping lead the University of North Alabama to 12 playoff appearances and seven conference championships in his 15 seasons on the coaching staff, Chris Willis was named as the 10th head football coach in UNA history on December 22, 2016. In his first season leading the UNA program, Willis and the Lions faced Division II's toughest schedule and overcame a rash of key injuries to emerge with a 5-5 overall record and a 5-3 Gulf South Conference mark. Despite playing six NCAA playoff teams on its 10-game schedule, UNA boasted one of the nation's premier defensive units in 2017. An assistant coach at North Alabama under Mark Hudspeth, Terry Bowden and Bobby Wallace, Willis served the Lions as defensive coordinator from 2012-16 and directed defensive efforts that helped UNA become the first school in Gulf South Conference history to win four straight league championships. In 2016 the Lions were No. 1 in Division II in passing efficiency defense, third in scoring defense, fourth in interceptions and 20th in total defense as UNA went 11-2 and reached the national championship game. A 1998 graduate of Delta State University, Willis initially joined the UNA staff in 2002 under Mark Hudspeth and coached tight ends. He then coached running backs in 2003 before moving to the defensive secondary from 2004-11. Wallace elevated Willis to defensive coordinator in 2012 and also assistant head coach. Willis also served as UNA's recruiting coordinator

from 2002 to 2005. As a student-athlete, Willis spent two years at Itawamba Community College on a football/baseball scholarship. He was a pitcher on the baseball team that claimed the school's first state championship in 1993. He was quarterback at Aberdeen (Miss.) High School where, in 1990, he led his team to the third round of the playoffs as the team posted a school best 12-1 record. In his last two seasons at Aberdeen, he quarterbacked the Bulldogs to a 20-2 record before his graduation in 1992. Willis received his Bachelor's Degree in Education in 1998 from Delta State and his Master's Degree in Education in 1999 from Delta State. While at DSU, he also taught in the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department. Born on born February 2, 1974, Willis is married to the former Tara Beausoliel of Greenville, Miss. They have three sons, Beau (11), Cody (9) and Drew (5).
