Severalcoursesincludeassignmentsfocusingonlocationandunderstandingofchemistryliterature.Thesewillbethefoundationofourassessmentprocess.InFall2016,Chem1101labstudentsareaskedinExperiment5tolocate,understand,andrespondtochemistryliteraturefromtheGreenChemistryInstituteoftheACSandaC&ENarticleregardingpolymersanddrugdelivery.ThegradingkeyfortheExperiment5Reportgivesanumericalrubrictogageifstudentshavedonethisandhowwell.ResultsforthesequestionscanberecordedontheMoodlesiteforthecoursebylabTA’stoprovideinitialdata.ChemistrySeminarcourses,Chem3901and4901,includesubstantialworklocating,understanding,andpresenting,primaryliteratureinchemistry.InstructorsforthesecoursescandevisearubricforevaluationofstudentsonthisPSLOastheyapproachgraduation.

Severalcourseshavesubstantialcommunicationskillsalreadyincorporatedintothecourse.Thesewillbethefoundationofourassessmentprocess.InSpring2014,Chem1102introducedawrittenlabreportwhichisgradedbypeerreviewusingaCPR(CalibratedPeerReview)programdevelopedatUCLA.Theintentwastobetterpreparestudentsfortheformalwrite-upsforChem2311lab.Fall2014Chem2311labreportscoreswillbecomparedtopreviousyears.Chem2321and2322havebothwrittenandoralskillswithwell-developedrubrics.WeplantoevaluatethepossibleuseofthosesamerubricsinChem3901and4901whichalsohavewrittenandoralskillcomponents.
