SPRING DANCE CONCERT2019

We are excited to offer you another season of entertaining and challenging theatre and dance at UM-Flint - live performances that will ignite laugher, contemplation, emotions, memories, and maybe even rich conversation with friends in the car on the way home or with your family at breakfast the next morning.

Each year we craft a season of live performance to provide students - on stage, off stage, and in the audience - a rich educational environment to develop as artists, makers, thinkers, and citizens. Join us as we question what is true with a hilarious classic comedy of manners, The Liar. Lift up your spirits with the poetry of motion in our new Fall Dance Concert. Feel the passion for justice and love with our electric take on Sophocles’ classic Antigone. Remember and embrace the beauty of ordinary life moments with the musical Ordinary Days. Welcome spring and ignite hope in your heart as you experience our Spring Dance Concert.

Thank you for your ongoing support of our department, campus, and Flint. Without you, our audience, a theatre or dance performance is just ...rehearsal.

We can’t wait to see you at the show!

Janet Haley, Associate Professor and Chair, Department of Theatre & DanceLisa Borton, Managing Producer, Department of Theatre & Dance

Paris, 1643. Dorante is a charming young man in search of romance who has one major flaw… he cannot tell the truth. In quick succession, he meets Cliton, a manservant who cannot tell a lie, and falls in love with Clarice. In his efforts to woo her, he invents a tale of his amazing military feats, unleashing a web of falsehood that ensnares everyone, sparking mishaps, mistaken identities and lie upon lie. In an age when our leaders play fast and loose with the facts, David Ives’ adaptation takes one of the world’s greatest comedies by the classic French playwright Pierre Corneille and brings it forward with sidesplitting modern sensibilities.

A young woman named Antigone risks her life as she defies King Creon, and his government’s laws. In the aftermath of her brothers’ bloody war, her brother Eteocles will be honored, but her brother Polyneices will be shamed and denied funeral rites. Sophocles’s drama from 441 BC pulses with resonance today, unfolding through a contemporary lens, as we witness a passionate individual’s actions protest and defy obedience to government laws in the name of dignity, decency, and the human heart.

DIRECTED BY JANET HALEY

Set on the bustling streets of New York City, Ordinary Days tells the story of four average New Yorkers whose lives end up unexpectedly intertwined: Warren, an ever-optimistic, struggling artist who balances his own creative ambitions with cat-sitting for his jailed mentor; Deb, a frazzled and cynical grad student whose life is quickly becoming a thesis study in uncertainty; Jason, a romantic at heart, who cannot understand why his relationship with the woman he loves has stalled; and Claire, Jason’s reluctant lover, held captive by an emotional wound from her past that she shares with no one. When Deb loses the notes to her graduate thesis, which is her most precious possession, she unknowingly starts a chain of events that turns the ordinary days of these four New Yorkers into something extraordinary. As these four characters flounder through all-too-familiar everyday obstacles, they slowly edge closer to connecting with each other—and to understanding that an ordinary event can have extraordinary effects.
