Drs. Saeed Chowdry and Sean Keli-shadi recently returned to Louisville to spend some time in the Acland fresh tissue lab. Both have been researching safer methods for fat transfer to the gluteal re-gion, which has been a hot topic in plastic surgery recently due to potentially life threatening vascular injury and embolism. Their visit was intended “to evaluate novel techniques and technologies to help im-prove the safety profile of these proce-dures. The fresh tissue lab at UL allowed us to further understand the anatomy of the area and define safer methods to prac-tice plastic surgery.”

While they were in town, they also “had some time to catch up with old friends and mentors as well as relive some great times we had as a team at the University. We may have overeaten at some of our favorite restaurants as the food scene in Louisville is strong-er than ever. We are truly grateful for the continued support from the University of Louisville.” And we are so grateful you stay in touch!

In November, our fellows had the exciting opportunity to participate in a nerve repair workshop along-side the Kleinert Hand Fellows. Dr. Kyle Eberlin came from Har-vard to teach the course, which covered sensory, motor, and mixed nerve repair. As always, we are in-debted to the Acland Fresh Tissue Laboratory for the facilities and support needed for this type of ed-ucation. And many thanks go to Dr. Palazzo for including us!

Every year, the Division of Plastic Surgery at the University of Louisville hosts several visiting professors to enrich the edu-cation we provide. Please contact us as [email protected] to be added to our invitation list!

In September, Steven Buchman, MD, FACS, joined us as the AAPS visiting professor. Dr. Buchman holds

joint appointments as professor in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery as well as Neurosurgery at the University

of Michigan Medical School. We were thrilled to have him present on “A Modern View of Wolff’s Law”, “Surgical

Approaches to CMF Fractures”, and “Utilization of the Buccal Fat Pad for Cleft Palate Repair” then took to the Acland

fresh tissue lab to demonstrate CMF techniques for our fellows. We were also lucky enough to have him mod-

erate a journal club on “Understanding the Functional Matrix to Gain Better Results in Craniofacial Surgery”. Thank

you, Dr. Buchman!

The Morton and Ann Kasdan Plastic Surgery Endowed Scholarship

rewards a promising medical student with a

cash award as a fare-well gift for their next

step into Plastics!

At the KSPS annual meeting this year, Dr. Gordon Tobin drew attention to hidden risks in Under the Radar— an examination of electronic cigarettes and their impact on plastic surgery specifically, and health more generally. His research has drawn attention beyond this initial audience though, as legislators and medical students have engaged in conversations on the public health risk and possible solutions. In Janu-ary, Dr. Tobin will present to the Student AMA Interest Group here in Louisville to help prepare them as they take this topic to Frankfort to help build related legislation for the Commonwealth.

Making a splash

Dr. Sean Kelishadi was recently interviewed by Playboy Australia after his client Shantal Monique was chosen as 2019 Playmate of the Year. The two talk about the role of plastic surgery in Shantal’s modeling career, and the role of Playboy magazine in Sean’s surgical career.
