Theassessment strategy for the academic
components ofthe BDSprogrammes adopts
a varied approach including:EMI (Extended
Matching Items);SBA (SingleBest Answer);
ShortAnswer; CriticalReasoning long answer;
OSCE (ObservedStructuredClinical
Examination); and1st,2nd and3rd BDSin-
programme component essaysto assess
criticalwriting skills.As theBDS programme
progresses, the assessments are carefullydesigned andappraised sothat they assess
application and understandingof knowledge
asappliedto theclinical situation,so asto link
withtheessentialclinical skills ethos.All
summative assessments are precededby
formative assessments, after whichthe
students receivedetailed feedback.
Withregardsto clinicalactivity, BDSstudents
must passan assessmentof basic clinical
competencebefore being allowedto usethese
newly acquiredskillson a patient. Thereafter
theassessment ofclinical activity is undertaken
usingcase reports,outreachreports and
purposedesigned clinicalmonitoring. Theseclinicalmonitoring proceduresare based onthe
work-based assessment toolsthat have been
validated foruse in postgraduate Dentistry
andMedicine.An important aspectof these
assessments is their integrated nature, and
their usein multipleclinics. This latter point is
crucialto thefairness androbustness of the
assessments.
Furthermore, thesystem ensuresthatall
Liverpoolgraduates are in the advantageous
positionof being ableto take their activity
portfolio intothework place toaid their
foundation training.
Central location. Mostof theteachingiscarriedout atthe Liverpool University Dental
Hospital(LUDH), which is housedin a modern
buildingwithintheUniversityprecincta few
minutes'walkfrom theStudents' Union,
librariesand citycentre.The hospital has
over 60,000patient attendancesannually
and contains the mostup-to-date equipment
and facilities.
Personalresponsibility for learning.Appropriately supportedby the School of
Dentistry, students willtakea veryhighlevel of
responsibility fortheirpersonal learningand
progress,and forthe managementof their
patients' care.
HOWYOU LEARNThe early years of the BDS coursesare
predominantly studentcentred learningwith
Problem-Based Learning(PBL) supported by
lectures. Whilstclinical trainingin subsequent
years continuesthis methodof learning,there
is,in addition, small groupteachingand
lectures throughout thethird, fourthand fifthyears.Much ofthe clinicalexperience is gained
withstudentstreatingpatients inthe different
clinicsin theDental Hospitalunderclose
supervisionof thestaff.
HOWYOU ARE ASSESSEDThe Schools assessment strategyis based
aroundassessing the learningoutcomes that
underpinthe development of each students
essential clinicalskills.Toprogress fromone
yearto another,studentsmustsatisfythe
academic ANDclinical learningoutcomes at
therequired level as statedin theassessment

ResearchincontextThe University of Liverpool is a research-intensiveuniversity, and academic staff in Dentistry are leadingresearchers in their fields. What this means for you asa student is that your learning will be informed by thevery latest developments in the area. An example of acurrent area of research in Dentistry is Dr. Smalleysresearch on the bacteria which cause periodontal(gum) disease.
Plaquecontains aggregatesof bacteria
that grow asbiofilmson thetoothsurfaces.
Periodontitis is a gumdisease that destroys
the structures supporting the teeth, includingbone, andis causedprimarily by Gram-
negativeoral anaerobicplaquebacteriawhich
break downproteinsfrombloodand gum
tissuesto gainnutrientsand topromote
growth. Chronicperiodontitisaccountsfor
upto 60% oftoothlossintheUK, and the
annualcostof NHSperiodontal therapy
in 2001/2002was 174 million.
This is of seriousconcern, as recentstudies
provideincreasingevidence thatperiodontitis
maybe a riskfactor forserious diseasessuch
as:myocardial infarctionand stroke;higher riskforpreterm, lowbirth weightbabies andpose
threats to thosewith chronic diseases like:
diabetes,respiratory diseases and osteoporosis.
Two black-pigmentinganaerobic bacteria
(BPAs),Porphyromonasgingivalis, and
Prevotellaintermedia, act askeyagentsin
periodontal diseaseand requirehaem for
growth. Haemenhancesvirulencein these
organisms andis usedto formtheblack
pigmentwhichprotectsthe cells from attack
by neutrophilsin theimmunesystem.
Importantly, BPAs are associated with active
periodontal destruction,and playa pivotal
ecologicalrole in degrading host proteinsto
provideaminoacidsas energysources forothersub-gingivalbacteria. Dr.Smalleys
research revolvesaround understanding
thechemicalstepsinvolved in generationof
protectivehaempigmentsof theBPAs, and
theroletheseorganismsplay ininitiationand
progression ofperiodontal disease.It hasalso
resulted in thediscoverythatpathogensother
than theBPAs have theabilityto producethese
defensive, haem-containinglayers. In addition,
theworkhas focussed onprotease (gingipain
and interpain)interactionswith haemoglobin
and otherhaem-containing proteinsfor the
purposesof establishing the molecular
mechanisms of haem release.
Thesestudies are aimed at determining which
componentsare involvedin thebinding of
haem anddepositionof thepigment onthe cell
surface.Researchinterests also includetheroles ofBPAsin rapidly progressing periodontal
diseasein diabeticpatients, in atherosclerosis
andin lunginfections in cystic fibrosispatients.
Aspectsof this originalresearch are delivered
to undergraduatestudents to underpintheir
understandingof periodontal diseaseand
its treatment.
