It is a great privilege, not only to be the first Kent alumnus appointed asChancellor, but to take on the role as the University approaches its 50thanniversary year. These are truly exciting times for the University of Kent, aswe celebrate another excellent result in the National Student Survey, comingjoint third for overall student satisfaction in the 2014 survey. The GuardianUniversity Guide 2015 places us – once again – in the top 20 nationally, andall of our academic schools produce research of international and world-classstanding according to the most recent Research Assessment Exercise.

My installation as the University’s sixth Chancellor took place in RochesterCathedral on Tuesday 8 July. It was a truly inspiring occasion and I wasdelighted to award degrees during ceremonies in both Rochester andCanterbury. These occasions remind us all of the main focus of our work, ourstudents, and enabling them all to have the opportunity to excel in whicheverfield they choose.

The coming year will be a chance to celebrate the many individuals andorganisations whose contributions to academic and social life of the Universityhave developed Kent into the inclusive, international and inspiring communitythat we see today. My continued association with the University is a source ofgreat pride, and in my first few months as Chancellor I have been privileged tomeet a great many individuals who contribute to its continued success. I lookforward to meeting many more of you over the coming year.

We are all most grateful for your continued generosity towards Kent and I lookforward to working with you to ensure that our University continues to gofrom strength to strength.

My connection with the University of Kentbegan in 2000, when I commenced myundergraduate degree in Classical andArchaeological Studies with Drama andTheatre Studies; this qualification enabled meto pursue a career in museums which I foundrewarding and exciting. When I firstconsidered returning to university to pursue aresearch degree, I was especially drawnto the strong sense of community at theUniversity of Kent. It’s not something that alluniversities are lucky enough to have. Thecampus here at Canterbury has a genuinelyfriendly and supportive atmosphere, andI know that studying here will enable meto produce the best possible work.

Through the Centre for Medieval and EarlyModern Studies, I've had the opportunity towork with academics in different departmentsand hear papers from leading scholars. I’vebeen encouraged to present my work atdiscussion groups and talk over ideas withmy peers. These activities are the foundationof a successful research career.

Scholarships, hardship bursaries and otherawards offered to students provide a financial

I was awarded the AlumniPostgraduate ResearchScholarship in 2013 and at thetime of writing I am startingmy second year of PhDresearch into everyday life inlate 16th century London andEngland. Being awarded theAlumni Postgraduate ResearchScholarship was a great honourand I am delighted to have theopportunity to thank those whoare so generously supportingthe work of the University. It is especially wonderful thatthe University is enablinghistorical research on everydaylife; a subject which is becomingincreasingly important andrelevant in the field of socialand cultural history.

stability which is hugely important; withoutfunding, many students, including myself, would simply be unable to start their research,or they would find activities such as visitingarchives and attending academic conferences, beyond their means. Funding enables us toproduce more innovative, exciting and relevantresearch, whilst also developing the skills weneed for our future careers.

I’m sure that my fellow students who have alsobenefited from these awards will agree thatthis support is a great motivator, especially inthose moments when study and research areat their most challenging. I would like to thankyou for your generosity, which enables theUniversity to support individuals like me inproducing exciting academic research, andhelps Kent to further its reputation as a leadingresearch University.

Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities(IDD) and their families.

People with IDD and/or developmentaldisabilities, like autism, are disadvantaged insociety in many ways. Those with severe orprofound IDD have great difficulties incommunicating or learning new skills and, without skilled support, have very restrictedlives. Those with milder disabilities are oftenvery keen to find work but can find it difficultto get jobs and frequently live in poverty;socially isolated and excluded from much ofmainstream society.

In a joint statement the Centre’s Co-Directors, Professor Glynis Murphy andProfessor Peter McGill, said: ‘We are veryhonoured to receive such a prestigiousaward. The Prize not only acknowledges thework of both the staff and students at theCentre, it reflects the legacy of its founder, the late Professor Jim Mansell.’

Exploring culture

Many years ago, the Ken Lewis DanceOrchestra, which performed in the county ofKent from the 1930s onwards, bequeathedits entire set of performing parts to theUniversity of Kent Music department. Thisextraordinary gift was unearthed by DeputyDirector of Music Dan Harding during themove by the Music department to the Colyer-Fergusson in the summer of 2013. Yellowedwith age and still bound by the originalstring, the sheets were bursting with musicfrom the 1930s era, and required instrumentswhich suited a number of student players. These students were invited to a firstrehearsal in November 2013 to play someof the pieces, and the General Harding’sTomfoolery band (pictured above) was born.

This lively twelve-piece dance orchestra hashad amazing success, from winningKeynestock, the annual Keynes collegebattle-of-the-bands competition, andheadlining at The Ballroom in Canterbury toplaying on the main stage of the Kent UnionSummer Ball and adding energy to the

Encouraging creativity

Over the last two years, two PhD studentsstudying Digital Arts in the School ofEngineering and Digital Arts (EDA) havebeen designing a sculpture for a vacantplinth outside the Jennison Building, home toEDA. Michael Green and Sam Frewer, whowon a competition to design the sculpture, have had the opportunity to research, designand commission the sculpture, namedSynapse-Soleil, thanks to the generoussupport of John Washington. The sculpturewas unveiled on 22 October 2014 as part ofthe University’s 50th anniversarycelebrations.

Louise Naylor, Director of the Unit for theEnhancement of Learning and Teaching, said ‘John’s kind donation has helped usrealise the creative talents of two PhDstudents in EDA, through a practical projectto design a sculpture for the Jennison plinththat will not only serve to celebrate the 50thanniversary, but will provide a symbol andlegacy for EDA in the future. This would nothave been possible without John’s backing’.

Promoting research

The Centre for Philanthropy, part of theSchool of Social Policy, Sociology and SocialResearch, has recently conducted researchinto why wealthy people give, with thefindings being published in a book titledRicher Lives: Why Rich People Give, by BethBreeze (pictured above) and Theresa Lloyd. The project was supported by a £20,000donation in 2012 from Pears Foundation, theCentre’s most generous philanthropicsupporter to date.

This support has enabled the Centre to makea useful contribution to the understanding ofwhy some wealthy people in the UK chooseto give away their private resources for thepublic good.

The Centre for Philanthropy are deeplygrateful to Pears Foundation for making thisstudy possible, and thank them for all theadditional support, encouragement andinsights that they gave along with theirfinancial contribution.

Supporting internationalisation

Thanks to the generosity of alumni acrossthe United States, the UKA scholarshipprogramme has gone from strength tostrength in recent years, and now supportsthe prestigious Kent-Fulbright award, whichprovides opportunities for gifted students toundertake postgraduate study at theUniversity of Kent as part of the Fulbrightprogramme.

In 2013, the University welcomed its firstKent-Fulbright scholar, J Meade Klingensmith(pictured above), who, after a life-changingyear at the University, has now gone on tocontinue his studies at Stanford. Beforefinishing his studies, he told us: ‘Without theKent-Fulbright award, I never would have hadthe chance to study at the University of Kent. The past year of my life would have lookedvery different, as, most likely, would the next. So, my deepest thanks go out to everyonewho has contributed to the UKA scholarshipprogramme. I can honestly say you changedmy life.’

The University is very grateful to theUniversity of Kent in America for its supportof this award.

Nurturing innovation

The Big Ideas Competition, run by KentInnovation and Enterprise and sponsored bySantander, enables students to present theirbusiness ideas to a panel of judges with awealth of experience in innovation, enterprise and business. This year’s prize, which was won by Disha Bansal (picturedabove), a second-year economics student, includes a fully-funded office in KentEnterprise Hub and support from aSantander business mentor for 12 months,a cheque for £1,000 to help towards earlystart-up costs and an all-expenses paid tripto Virginia, USA, to compete in the GlobalBusiness Concept Challenge.

The Santander Small to Medium Enterprise(SME) Internship Scheme has also seenhuge success. The Scheme supportsinternships for students within smallbusinesses, whose wages are partiallyfunded by Santander and the University.SMEs have the opportunity of hiring studentinterns and improving their businessacumen. In turn, students gain vitalexperience in the workplace which willbenefit their employability and future careerprospects.

Kent was the firstUK law school toallow students toconduct casesand provide freelegal advice to thepublic as a part oftheir studies. Thispioneeringapproach provedto be enormouslysuccessful, and today, the Law Clinic hasgrown to provide a vital service tohundreds of members of the localcommunity, whilst continuing to providestudents with vitally important experiencesof legal practice. Professor JohnFitzpatrick (pictured above), Director ofthe Kent Law Clinic, tells us of theimportance of the work of the clinic, andsome recent successes:

‘Over the last year, the Law Clinic dealtwith over 1,500 queries from members ofthe public, and provided legal advice andrepresentation in many fields includingemployment, housing, consumercontract, immigration and asylum, welfarebenefits, family, public rights of way andvillage greens. Over 200 Kent Law Schoolstudents participated in the provision ofthis service; 51 of them had their work inthe Clinic assessed for their LLB degrees, the remainder contributed on a voluntary,extra-curricular basis.

The service is provided by Clinic solicitorsand students working together, aided bylocal volunteer solicitors and barristers, and three pieces of work illustrate justhow important it is to the public.

First, in January of this year the Clinicapplied to the Home Office for asylumunder the Geneva Convention on behalfof an Afghan man on the grounds that hisatheism would put him at risk ofpersecution if he were returned toAfghanistan. The case, believed to be thefirst of its kind, received widespread

media coverage across the world, andhas undoubtedly brought hope to manypeople fearing persecution for similarreasons.

Secondly, over the course of the year theClinic lodged nine appeals to the First-tier and Upper Tribunals (Social Security)on behalf of clients who were facingdemands to repay alleged‘overpayments’ of benefit or had beenrefused Employment Support Allowance.Eight of these appeals were successful, and the outcome worth a total of£218,000 to these clients: £106,000 inrespect of repayment orderssuccessfully resisted, and £112,523 interms of extra allowance gained(calculated to the next review period).

Thirdly, under the supervision of Clinicsolicitor Elaine Sherratt, three students –Alex Courtnage, Oliver Hartland andHannah Lennox – appeared at a five-dayPublic Inquiry as advocates for theresidents of an estate in Westgate-on-Sea who had applied to have a local fieldregistered as a ‘village green’ in order tosecure its continued use by theirneighbourhood. The Inspector acceptedthe case that they put forward, and inJune 2014 Kent County Council decidedto implement her recommendation forregistration. These are difficultapplications to bring especially for thosewithout expertise or representations, andthe residents were delighted.

I speak for all of us in the Law Clinic –the students, the staff and our generousvolunteer colleagues in the local legalcommunity – in saying how grateful weare to all of those who have contributedto the Kent Law Campaign. It really is atremendous boost to our efforts to knowthat we are moving steadily towards thereality of a new building which willenable us to help more people locallyand to teach more students in theprocess. Thank you!’

The Kent Law Campaign is anexciting £5 million project tobuild a new home for the KentLaw Clinic, which provides freelegal advice and representationto members of the localcommunity who need butcannot afford access to legalservices, and the University ofKent’s Mooting Programme

Throughout 2013/2014 it hasbeen a great privilege to meetso many of the generous donorswho are making this newbuilding a reality. TheUniversity would like to extendits thanks to all of its donorswhose support has helped toadvance the Kent Law Schooleven further into the ranks ofthe UK’s finest universities.

The University’s founders werecommitted to the principle ofequal opportunities for allstudents, and we aim tocontinue this tradition byensuring that all of ourstudents have the chance toexcel academically, personallyand professionally, regardlessof financial circumstances.

The Kent Opportunity Fund was establishedto support a broad range of scholarships, student projects to enhance extra-curricularactivities at Kent, and bursaries to supportstudents experiencing financial hardship.Committees of Kent staff, alumni and donorsallocate the funds raised and ensure thatthey go to the students most in need.

The Fund supports three main areas. Thefirst is the Alumni Postgraduate ResearchScholarship, which offers students theopportunity to study in a field that they feelpassionately about whilst also contributing toUniversity research. Two students who havebenefited from the Scholarship are featuredon page 12. The Kent Opportunity Fund alsosupports the Student Projects GrantScheme, which enables students to bid forfunds to run their own projects which willenhance their academic studies and developtheir personal and professional skills.Examples of some of these projects can befound on page 11. With financial pressuresrising due to the increase in tuition fees andliving costs, students who are experiencingfinancial hardship can also receive supportfrom the Kent Opportunity Fund, which offersbursaries of between £500 and £1,000, andhelps those who are struggling financially toget back on their feet and complete theirstudies. Aaron Brown has personal experience ofhow the support of a bursary can make areal difference. He received a KentHealthbursary in 2013 from the KentOpportunity Fund, which enablesoutstanding undergraduates to work onclinical research projects during thesummer vacation. Aaron took aplacement at the William Harvey Hospitalwhere he carried out research into thetreatment of ischaemic strokes. Sinceundertaking this project, Aaron has beeninvited to present his work at the 2014European Stroke Conference in Nice, andis hoping to see the paper published inthe ASA Stroke Journal in the near future. He has helped other Kent students togain similar opportunities by taking partin the spring 2014 Telephone Campaignas a student caller, which raised over£68,000 for the Kent Opportunity Fund.

What made you decideto come to the Universityof Kent?I chose to come to Kent as the coursehas a good reputation and very wellrespected lecturers. I also liked the factthat the University is in an extremely nicearea of England.

How did you find out aboutthe KentHealth bursaryscheme? While I was searching for opportunitiesto improve my application to medicalschool, my tutor emailed me about theposition at the hospital paid for by theKentHealth bursary team. Staying inCanterbury and undertaking thisresearch was something I wouldn’t havebeen able to do if not for the bursary

How has the bursarychanged your experience ofKent? It greatly improved my chances ofgaining a place to study one of the mostcompetitive degrees – Graduate EntryMedicine at Imperial College London. Ihave also managed to complete mydissertation using the research databaseI worked with during my placement andso it has completely changed my finalyear experience for the better.

available. These scholarships were awardedto second and final year undergraduatestudents, based on their academicperformance and covered tuition, travel andaccommodation expenses.

Summer School students were able todevelop their knowledge of the EuropeanUnion or study the revolutionary influences ofFrench history and culture. Over a two weekperiod, they debated with academics andinteracted with real life practitioners andthinkers on a range of themes and issues. Each programme comprised academic andcultural sessions that took place in andaround Brussels or Paris, and providedstudents with a range of transferable skillsthat will be attractive to future employers.

Healthcare Work ExperienceProjects: £4,000Working with KentHealth, this projectprovided bursaries to allow eight students to each complete an eight week workplacement during the summer vacation. Inpartnership with healthcare providers (suchas NHS trusts), our students gained valuableexperience by being exposed to the realitiesof the healthcare profession and undertakingresearch within a professional environment.

Your generosity in action Since launching in 2012, the KentOpportunity Fund has provided students withmany chances to develop their skills, confidence and career prospects. In January2014, grants of almost £40,000 were madeto 13 projects taking place around theUniversity, designed to benefit students andenhance their experience whilst studying atthe University.

These activities – often organised by studentgroups themselves – illustrate just some ofthe ways your gifts are making a difference toour students, the community and beyond! The projects outlined below highlight just asmall sample of those funded:

Kent Experiences of Workbursary scheme: £5,000

Work experience is now often seen asessential in securing that all important firstjob, but many students struggle to supportthemselves whilst undertaking it. Workinghours may be incompatible with part-timejobs designed to fit around their studies, orthe costs of transport or accommodationmay be more than they can afford.

In 2013, the Careers and EmployabilityService launched the ‘Kent Experiences ofWork’ scheme to help students obtain workexperience whilst studying at the University. This included a bursary scheme set up tosupport students undertaking otherwiseunpaid work experience.

The scheme covers out-of-pocket expensesincurred when undertaking these activities –not only covering direct expenses like travelcosts, but extending other costs, likechildcare or the purchase of appropriatework clothing. During the 2013/14 academicyear, 55 students benefited from bursariessupported by this project.

European Summer Schoolscholarships – Brussels andParis: £10,000European Summer Schools took place at ourParis and Brussels centres in the summer of2014. The project was highly successful, withover 500 applications made for the 40 places

This work benefits both the partnerorganisation, by providing a capable student, keen to learn and develop, and buildsrelationships between the University andlocal healthcare organisations, potentiallybenefiting both through future collaborations. This project is jointly funded by KentHealth, the Kent Opportunity Fund and East KentHospitals University Foundation Trust.

Dr Samuel Godfrey – 2007ScholarSam Godfrey was awarded the AlumniPostgraduate Research Scholarship tosupport his PhD in Biochemistry, developinga new targeted therapy for use in cancertreatment. Sam worked with a team ofresearchers to develop an antibody whichwould specifically target cancerous cells, counteracting the harmful side-effects ofradiation and chemotherapy.

Several laboratories in the UK are nowworking with the antibody that theyproduced, researching new therapies forleukaemia, bone-marrow transplants andgene therapy.

Following the award of his PhD, Sam wasappointed as a Postdoctoral ResearchAssociate at Imperial College London.

“I am hugely grateful to everyone whosupported my scholarship, because withoutthose donations I could not have afforded towork towards my doctorate on a subject thatI feel so passionately about. Without thefunding from alumni I could not haveprogressed to this exciting point in my careerand I cannot express eloquently enough howthankful I am”

Dr Kirsten Haack – 2001 ScholarKirsten commenced her PhD in InternationalRelations at Kent in 2001. Her researchexplored the role that democracy has playedand continues to play in the United Nationsagenda.

It was only by being selected for theprestigious Alumni Postgraduate ResearchScholarship that Kirsten was able to fulfil herresearch ambitions at Kent.

With the funding, Kirsten was able to studyfull-time and also work as a seminar teacher. This opportunity helped her to secure herfirst post as an Associate Lecturer at theOpen University. Kirsten’s academic careerhas gone from strength to strength and in2010 she was appointed Senior Lecturer inInternational Politics at NorthumbriaUniversity. She published her first book in2011.

Kirsten told us: ‘I cannot emphasise enoughhow valuable the alumni scholarship was inaffording me the kind of career and life Ihoped for. I am now proud to support thisaward myself, and look forward to seeingmany more students benefiting from it in thefuture’.

Since 1995, the AlumniPostgraduate ResearchScholarship has providedfunding to allow talented Kentgraduates from around theglobe to undertake world-leading research at theUniversity. Over the years, their work has spanned a hugerange of subjects includingbiochemistry, conservation andgang culture.

As we approach the 20thanniversary of the award –which is generously supportedby alumni and friends of theUniversity through the KentOpportunity Fund – we caughtup with two former recipientsand current donors, Dr KirstenHaack and Dr Samuel Godfrey,to reflect on the impact it hashad on their lives.

DONOR REPORT 2013/2014

Dear friends,As the University of Kent’s fifth Vice-Chancellor, I am privileged to be part of aninstitution which has a long history of beingable to say “thank you” to the donors andsupporters who make our work possible. Aswe look forward to our 50th anniversary year,it is fitting to reflect on the great many peoplewho, from the very beginning, have sharedour ambitions and supported our manyachievements.

Without the founding donors who raised theinitial funds to bring the idea of a university inKent to reality; without the early donation fromthe Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation whichenabled the construction of the GulbenkianTheatre; and without the many thousands ofindividuals who have supported us over thepast 50 years, our University would be a verydifferent place.

It is a privilege to thank the donors andsupporters of the University at the manyevents we host, including our annualBenefactors' Garden Party, which took placein June this year. It was wonderful to see somany of you and to hear from some of thevery many students who benefit so muchfrom your generosity.

Other events taking place this year includedour new Donor Appreciation Day on 14February and an event for supporters of ourextraordinarily successful Kent LawCampaign, at Fortnum & Mason in London. Our student community in particular haverisen to the ambitious challenge of creating anew building for our award-winning Kent LawClinic with tenacity and enthusiasm, and ahuge range of fundraising events andactivities have inspired many others tosupport this vital project.

I was also privileged to meet many of ourinternational supporters again this year.During visits to Hong Kong and Malaysia Iwas able to thank our alumni committeesthere for their continued support and for theirtireless efforts on behalf of the University intheir part of the world. Events in Paris,Brussels, and Athens reinforced ourEuropean connections and enabled us to say

a personal thank you to our many alumni andfriends who have supported the developmentof our European centres since the first wasestablished in Brussels 15 years ago.

It was a real pleasure to be able to say thankyou in person to so many of you. In this, our50th anniversary year, I hope to have theopportunity to meet many more. The range ofevents, projects and activities taking placeacross the University, within the UK andinternationally, is extraordinary, and a realtestament to the dedication of our staff andstudents and their determination to celebratethis very important anniversary.

We take huge pride in our past and the manyindividuals who have shaped the University ofKent over the past 50 years, and we will berecognising our generous supporters overthe next few pages. I look forward to workingwith you all as we 'inspire the future' and lookforward to to the next 50.

With sincere thanks for your support,

The launching of the University remindsme in many ways of the launching of aship: romance, high hopes and soundcraftsmanship. She is to be the home and workplace of a company of men and women of varying views and skills, bonded together for a chain of voyagesinto the seas of knowledge.Lord Grimond Chancellor of the University of Kent 1970-1990
