The PlaceThe University of Houston campus is located on 667 park-like acres, lush with mature

trees, gardens and lawns winding through one of the best public art collections

outside of downtown Houston. We take our green commitment beyond the physical

beauty of the campus, and that’s why The Princeton Review named us one of the most

environmentally responsible universities in the nation. Step inside our buildings, and

you’ll discover world-class facilities, high-tech laboratories and expansive libraries.

Houston, the nation’s fourth largest city, is known for its oil and gas industry, but

there is so much more. A vibrant arts scene, from the symphony and live concerts

to art museums and award-winning outdoor murals, swirls throughout the city.

Restaurants offer every cuisine imaginable. Best of all, this global business hub

offers opportunities for internships and fieldwork in every area. Our students

politics or world religions from textbooks. You’ll be exposed to different cultures,

languages and ideologies every day with the people around you — your friends,

Live on Campus. Achieve Success. Create Memories. Living on campus will be one of the most rewarding experiences of your college life.

You’ll nurture your academic success, build lifelong friendships and create lasting

memories. You will have the opportunity to create these memories with familiar

faces — people that will be your support system, your inner circle and ultimately

your lifelong friends.

Your Resources Our residential communities are located in the middle of the action with convenient

access to classes, advisors, dining, events, recreation, parks, theaters, libraries and

much more. Within the residence halls, you have full access to tutoring centers,

computer labs, study lounges and other academic support resources. You also will

be able to connect with professors outside of the classroom through our Faculty-in-

Residence program and get immediate assistance from resident advisors, residential

life coordinators and desk assistants.

Your SuccessWith all of these advantages, it is no surprise that students who live on campus take

more credit hours each semester, achieve higher grade point averages, are more

likely to graduate in four years and are more engaged in campus life than those who

choose to live elsewhere. We strongly encourage you to CHOOSE HOUSTON, and

Our HistoryFirst founded in 1927, our school officially became the University of Houston in 1934. Two years later, the institution acquired the land for a permanent campus, and

by 1939 opened its first building. Since then, UH has developed a series of deep-rooted traditions that continue to thrive today.

Our Traditions

ShastaShasta is the official mascot of the Houston Cougars. Between 1947 and 1989, five live cougars served as mascots and lived on campus. Since 1989, the tradition has continued with a student-Shasta mascot (above) and Sasha, the female cougar mascot, both are best known for their traditional push-ups performed after every football touchdown. In 2012, another live cougar, Shasta VI, was adopted in partnership with the Houston Zoo — making appearances during UH events via webcam from his home at the zoo, where he also blesses all of the UH class rings before graduation.

The Cougar SignMade by folding the ring finger of the right hand toward the palm and covering it with the thumb, the Cougar Sign dates back to 1953, when Shasta I lost a toe in a cage door on her way to a game. The opposing team mocked UH by imitating the cougar’s injury. After a staggering victory against the same team a few years later, the Cougars adopted that gesture as a symbol of school pride.

Scarlet Red and Albino WhiteThe colors of Sam Houston’s ancestor, Sir Hugh, serve as UH’s official colors. The red stands for courage and inner strength to face the unknown, while the white stands for the good of helping one’s fellow man.

HomecomingEach year, students, faculty, staff and alumni pack TDECU Stadium and flow through the streets of campus for a weekend of football and festivities in celebration of the University of Houston’s Homecoming. At UH there also is a full week of activities preceding the actual Homecoming weekend, which includes pep rallies, Homecoming court announcements and concerts — not to mention the tailgating, the Homecoming parade and a live cougar on game day.uh.edu/homecoming

Frontier FiestaFrontier Fiesta is an annual student-run, student-led festival hosted by UH, featuring concerts, carnival booths, multicultural events and cook-offs. After its debut in 1940, LIFE magazine, a national publication, dubbed it “The Greatest College Show on Earth.” It still is. Come for the fun of it and support scholarship and community. uh.edu/fiesta
