Mr. White reported as follows for thoJudiciary Committee on Sonato bill No,2, entitled "An Act to regulate tho em-

The bill Is admirable as far as Itgoes, but unfortunately It docs not gofar enough to amount to anythingwhatever.

The bill purports to prohibit certainnets which manifestly ought to be pro-

Captain Olbbs' story of tho delay !('damage Is short. He says thai whenabout four hundred 'miles south of SapFranclBco, a whirlwind struck theOlympic nnd broke her masts, nil buttho Jlrger mast, aft like so many p!ptsterna. The blow did not last over n

minute and was terrlffic In force as Isevidenced by the way the masts worecut oft. The foremast from the mast-

head Is gone, tho mainmast from themalntopmast head Is gono and the mil-

ieu irast Is but a stump. The Jiggermast was left standing Intact but thespanker boom was smashed and had tobe repaired temporarily. When thestorm struck tho vessel several nuiiwero nloft, nnd went overboard withtho mass of rigging. One of the sailorswns not recovered but the others got

aboard again. The hull of tho vesselnnd cargo were not damaged at nil, exccpt where on tho port side, tho plank-

Moderate weather prevailed befoi!nnd nftcr tbe whirlwind struck theOlympic and finding that the essel wooable to snll with what canvas was left,Cnptuln nib Instead of putting b.ieklto San Francisco to make repairs conoldcred It best to continue to port. With lower foretopsall nnd foresail andmainsail and spanker the vessel mailotho trip In thirty-thre- e days nnd fromyesterday morning until sho was pick-

The snfe arrival of the vessel has lift-

hnvo been put to great expense andmuc'i delay by the of thobark.

Tbe good Judgment of Captain OlbbsIn coming right along Instead of put-

MONDAY MARCH 18, 1901.

When the Morning Organ lias no re-

aped for womanhood It can hardly beexpected to treat men of the Legisla-ture with nerage decency .

It Is now up to the Governor to writea message on "shape." Such a dlgnlfleddocument might attract as little atten-tion is his first message to the Legis-

lature.

The proficiency shown by the boys ofthe mllltta nt Saturday evening' compctltlve drill Is certainly not an nrgu

incut In fnor of disbanding the milltary organization of the Territory.

The lighting parson has made blaappearance nmong the negro Inborenof Spreckelsvllle. Although the par-

son committed the sin of losing histemper, the account of the affair Indi-

cates that even a parson was JustifiedIn the action.

No less an ardent supporter ofPresident McKlnley than Harper'sWeekly comes out with a request thatthe President during his second termappoint men to his Cabinet who nrcworthy ot tho important tasks imposedupon them. According to Harper's,Secretary Root Is the only man of ca-

pacity in McKlnlej's Cabinet.

The county government bill lias tak-

en Its place on the legislative racetrack. No handicaps of useless dis-

cussion should be allowed to Impedecourse. Is disfavor progress of advancing it

SUPPORTING THE GOVERNOR.

"Odell's measures made party mensurrs."

Thus reads the headlines of a dis-

patch in the New York Journal statingthat the plan of Governor Odcll n Re-

publican Governor has been taken upby Republicans In the New YorkLegislature.

Now mark you. people of Hnvvall!Have any of the measures of GovernorDole. Governor of the Territory of Ha-

waii, appointed by President McKlnley, been taken up as party measures by theRepublicans though they be n minor-ity of the Legislature? of the Teirltoryof Hawaii?

The Govcinur of this Territory so faras tin; Legislature has thus piocecdcdhas not received one Iota of support.from the Republican minority of theLegislature

Yet this minority of the Legislaturewas elected on the Republican ticket.

Sanford II. Dole was nppolnted Gov-

ernor of tho Tcrrltoiy of Hnwali by aRepublican President. Dole is supposed

to be n Republican. Certainly McKln-

ley Is. or at least ho was elected tooffice as such. What does It mean?

Simply that Governor Dole has nosupport whatever from tho Republi-

can pnrty of Hawaii nor Is his conductsuch r.s to warrant It; that his appoint-

ment was the worst blow the Americanprogress and peace of tho country everreceived. That there Is no leader of

the minority nnd not inoro than one ortwo Individuals of It who will rally tohis support. Are uny more nrgumentsneeded 1

sideration. In other words, he hasgiven the Legislature to understandthat It Is taking up matters that arenone of Its business.

The only Inference that can be drawnfrom the Governor's scant courtesy Itthat Land Commissioner Ilrown's workat Washington was that of n lobbyistpure nnd simple. This inference isfurther supported by Mr. Ilrown's pub-

lic statement; "The bill to extend Unit-

ed States land laws to Hawaii perishedIn tho committee. Land CommissionerHermann advised against Its passageAND WHEN HK DID THIS I WASREADY TO COME HOME." Further-mor- e,

the statement wns given out bfthe executive officials that Land Com-

missioner Ilrown wns to go to Washington at the behest of the "executivecouncil" that means the Governorand that his expenses would be paidout of the Territorial appropriation fofthe Public Lands department.

If this be true, and the Governor hasrefused to assert that It Is false, nngreater fraud was ever perpetratedupon n people by the most corrupt gov-

ernment that ever went down to ultl-mat- o

defeat. The only conclusions that can be

drawn from this latest activity of anappointee of Governor Dole Is that theGovernor Is utterly devoid of theknowledge of the duties of an Ameri-

can administrative official or else he Is

ready to accept any measures, honestor dishonest to accomplish his ends.Whatever horn of the dilemma is accepted, the proof of incompetence Isabsolute, the demand for his withdraw-al from office should be no lese posi-

tive.Oovcrnor Dole has taken the Initia-

tive In bringing the executive author-ity of the Territory In direct conflictwith the legislative representation ofthe people. He ran find no support forhis ndlon among the people of Hawaii, except n possible few who view with

Federal officer whether President ordepartmental clerk, that support andthe rrrty it represents will be repu-

diated by the people of Hawaii, nnd therepudiation will be entirely Justified. For be It known to the Governor, thososerving under him and those responsl-bi- o

for his being In office, that the peo-

ple of this Territory know full welltheir rights nnd privileges ns Ameri-

can citizens, and they will not allowthose rights nnd privileges to be trampl-e d upon or treated with Indifference byany official however high In the Terri-tory ot nation, who assumes tho prerogatives of dictator or king.

'StraightFronts'The last and most perfect achievement of the "Sonnctte"corset makers is the ' 'Straight Front. Corset M litant"It Is so simple in design and construction that it needs but a wordof description. The secret of it -- II lies In substituting for yores, transverse seams in graceful curves, which adapt themselves toall figures, thus securing the most comfortable and perfect fit.It is made in three or four pieces which, being cut on correct geo-

metrical principles with transverse seams running round the bodyInstead of up and down, evade all strain ; thus avoiding the ob-

jections urged against every other corset. The fit is perfect, forit Is automatic, or yielding so easily to everymovement that the wearer is unconscious of any feeling of con-

straint, an important feature in tills climate. It, as the name Implies, produces the fashionable effect upon

the figure. The wearer at once, and of necessity, assumes the"military" position. Hie bust is allowed to fall, all pres-sure is removed from the diaphragm and applied to the abdomenand the new position is far more graceful and conducive to healththan the old one.

These corsets may be sfen in our store in several qualities. We shall be glad to show them, and no one need feel obliged tobuy them because we have had the privilege of showing them.
