TO: Dr. Anita Enriquez, Senior Vice President FROM: Robert M. Sajnovsky, Chair, Society of Emeritus Professors and Retired Scholars SUBJECT: The Society’s Nineteenth Annual Report (2015) Members of the Society of Emeritus Professors and Retired Scholars (SEPRS) have engaged in numerous academic, research, and service activities this past year. These professional, community, and volunteer endeavors demonstrate how emeritus faculty continue to help the University achieve its mission for our island, the region, and elsewhere throughout the world. An item of note, and only incidentally mentioned in some members’ listings under the heading, “Philanthropy”, is a scholarship fund approved by and contributed to by the SEPRS membership through the UOG Endowment Foundation, which will begin distributing an annual amount of $1000.00 to deserving UOG students in AY 2017. The Year End Financial Report details the amount currently available for the SEPRS Scholarship. In addition to the SEPRS scholarship, some of our members have established their own, individual scholarship funds with the UOG Endowment Foundation, and are now, or soon will be aiding deserving UOG students by their monetary contributions. Attached is our annual report listing the work of the Society’s members. Members submissions appear in alphabetical order, and the Financial Report for 2015 is in an appendix to the report. Thank you for your continued support and attention.

Daniel L. Robertson, Ph.D. Professor Emeritus of English and Applied Linguistics

RESEARCH, PROFESSIONAL SCHOLARSHIP AND CREATIVE ENDEAVORS

During 2015, I have continued to pursue the study of Chinese in my retirement. To that end, I have made two trips to Sias International University, with which UOG has a memorandum of agreement. I travelled to Henan Zhengzhou April 7-25 and again August 21-31. During these trips, I studied an average of 3 hours per day with a highly trained teacher of Chinese as a Second Language in the College of Chinese Language and Culture at Sias. I was happy to continue to develop the relationships I have formed at Sias, in the hope that UOG may someday realize its potential for mutual cooperation. In the past year, my focus has moved from learning Chinese to the study of Chinese linguistics. I have joined with the principal of the Chinese School of Guam in studying principles of Chinese linguistics through the use of online resources. As these resources are delivered in Chinese, they are also useful to me in learning Chinese language, especially in extending professional vocabulary. I feel that these endeavors are good for me personally and that some may eventually result in benefit for the University.

SERVICE I provide translation and interpretation services for the Chinese School of Guam. I also provide tutoring and consultation services for Chinese students at ELI and UOG. PHILANTHROPY: I have established an annual award in Applied Linguistics through the UOG Endowment Foundation; the principal will begin to produce awards in two years.
