Introduction –

The Faculty of Science and Mathematical Sciences of Delhi University has a capacity of around

11000 undergraduate seats in its 41 colleges. It includes top-ranking Science colleges like St.

Stephen’s College, Miranda House, Hansraj College, Hindu College etc, known for their

academic quality, reputed faculty members and co-curricular activities apart from the state of

the art infrastructure.

Faculties of Science and Mathematical Sciences have fourteen departments functioning under

Most of the ranking surveys place many of the DU’s Colleges offering Science Programme in the

list of Top 20 Science Colleges in India.

St. Stephen’s College with an intake of 170 seats tops the chart as it is one of the most sought

after colleges in DU for Science programmes. However the college doesn’t report highest

admission cut-off as per the previous few years’ data. The cut-off for admission to the DU

colleges offering B.Sc programme is reported within the range of 98% and 65%. In 2013, the

first cut-off for the B.Sc Statistics (Hons.) programme was as high as 97.5% for the top DU

colleges, which offer undergraduate degree in Science.

What is the admission fee for pursuing B.Sc (Hons.) from Delhi University?

Every constituent college of Delhi University has its own fee structure. The fees for pursuing

B.Sc (Hons.) in Delhi University colleges range between INR 6500 and INR 14,000. If you wish

to apply for top colleges in DU like St. Stephen’s, you need to pay Rs. 13485/- as admission

fee. While applying for B.Sc (Hons.) programme in colleges like Kirori Mal, you need to remit an

admission fee of Rs. 9350/-, on the other hand if applying in Bhaskaracharya College of

Applied Sciences, you need to deposit Rs. 6105/-. Whereas opting for any of the science

departments in Keshav Mahavidyalaya, you need to pay Rs. 7561/-.

University of Delhi: Interesting Facts

When the university was founded, dating back to 1922; there were only three

colleges in Delhi, St. Stephen’s College, which was founded in 1881,

Hindu College founded in 1899 and Ramjas College in 1917, which

subsequently got affiliated to it. The university had modest

beginnings with only three colleges, two faculties (Science and

Science) and about 750 students.

Today Delhi University has grown into one of the largest

universities in India. At present, there are 16 faculties, 86 academic

departments, 77 colleges and 5 other recognized institutes spread around Delhi , with nearly

1,32,435 regular students (UG-1,14,494 and PG-17,941) and 2,61,169 students (UG-2,58,831

and PG-2,338) in School of Open Learning education programme.

While University of Delhi received 1,53,680 admission applications in 2012 for its three-year

programme, the number increased to an overwhelming 2,56,024 in 2013 when DU introduced

the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme. University of Delhi currently offers 54,000 seats

under various disciplines.

Campus

As many as 65 colleges are affiliated to the University of Delhi, spread across the national

capital. Interestingly, the Sherubtse College in Kanglung, Bhutan is also an affiliated

institution of the University. There are two main campuses of the University- North Campus

and South Campus.

North Campus

The North Campus houses 16 faculties and 84

departments. It hosts the three colleges- St.

Stephen's College, Hindu College and Ramjas

College, which originally constituted the

University of Delhi when it was founded. Some

of the popular colleges under North campus

The South Campus started offering postgraduate

programmes in a rented building in 1973 with

Sciences. Later on, land was allotted near

Dhaula Kuan and, henceforth, the offices and

teaching activities were shifted to this campus in

1983. The South Campus colleges are more

scattered compared the ones in North

College, Gargi College, Acharya Narendra Dev College and Deshbandhu College are some of the

colleges that beautify the south campus of Delhi University. This campus is known for

excellence in life sciences with departments like Plant Molecular Biology, Genetics,

Microbiology, and Biochemistry and some other professional programmes in departments like

Business Economics and Financial Studies.

Four-Year Undergraduate Programme –

In 2013, Delhi University introduced four- year degree programme for its undergraduate

courses and replacing the earlier 3-year programme. As the University launched the 4-year

programme, it also brought many structural changes in teaching methodology and made the

programmes more flexible suiting to the different needs of students, parents and industry. The

University now offers the following degrees for its undergraduate programmes:

Bachelor with Honours (4 Academic Years)

Bachelor (3 Academic Years)

Diploma (2 Academic Years)

DU, through its all-new 4-year undergraduate programme across disciplines aims to

encapsulate the changes in the present Indian education system. According to University

officials, the thought process behind introduction of the 4-YUP is to restrain the overburdening

of the classical mode of theory-based dissemination of knowledge within the closed lecture

halls and thus redefining the knowledge process.

If you are taking admission in University of Delhi the current academic session, you will be

ensured with a multiple degree option.

Multiple Degree Options under 4-YUP: What does it mean?

As per the guidelines of the 4-Year Undergraduate Degree Programme (4-YUP), if you wish or

have to leave college after two years, DU shall acknowledge your education and award you a

Diploma.

Not only this, you can return to DU in the future to complete your education. Similarly, if you

wish or have to leave after three years, DU shall give you a Bachelor’s degree with a Major Subject.

However, if you successfully complete your course in DU after 4 years, you will be awarded a

Bachelor with Honours Degree.

The university has divided the course curriculum in bi-semesters, so that you can excel in your

academics with more attention towards practical learning.

Ramjas College On applying for the DU 4-YUP; you will be given the following course curriculum –

First Year –

33% Weightage – Choose your Main/Major Subject – You need to choose and study your

main subject for your Honours Degree. This main subject is called Discipline Course – I.

67% Weightage - In addition to the above main major subject, you will be offered to pursue

Foundation Courses (FC). These courses will help you to understand the challenges of India.

You will work in a hands-on manner. This proggrame will help to enhance your

communication, IT and data analysis skills and you will learn in an inter-disciplinary mode.

Second Year –

34% Weightage – Main/Major Subject – You will be continuing with your Major subject, that

you chose in the first year as Discipline Course – I.

33% Weightage – Foundation Course – You will be further exposed to a small number of

Foundation Courses that will enhance your broad knowledge in a hands-on project mode for

wide ranging benefits.

16% Weightage – Minor Subject –From a wide variety of subjects, you will have to choose a

maximum of two subjects of your liking for additional knowledge outside your major area of

study. These courses will be called DC-II courses.

16% Weightage – Applied Courses – You will choose two courses from a vast choice of

knowledge based skills courses that will help increase your employability or help make you an

entrepreneur.

Third Year –

60% Weightage – Main/Major Subject – You will now be given a greater depth in your major

subject.

20% Weightage – Minor Subject – You will continue to study your choice of Discipline – II

subjects to enhance your knowledge outside your major area of study.

20% Weightage – Applied Courses – You will once again choose two courses from a vast

choice of knowledge based skills courses that will help increase your employability or help

make you an entrepreneur.

Fourth Year –

75% Weightage – Main/Major Subject – You will now study at a deep level your main/major

subject in DC – I. you will also be exposed to research.

25% Weightage – Minor Subject – You will continue to study your choice of Discipline – II

subjects to enhance your knowledge outside your major area of study.

Courses and Papers under 4YUP

Foundation Courses: The first two years of the curriculum emphasizes on several foundation

building (core) courses (FC) that include language, Science, science and life, building

mathematical ability, culture and civilization; governance and

citizenship. These courses would help you in enhancing your

communication and analytical skills. You will also be having

one value-based course (IMBH– Integrating Mind Body &

Heart /CA-Cultural Activities Including NCC, Sports, NSS

etc.) per semester throughout the curriculum, which shall

further help you to reflect upon values and culture.

Discipline Courses: Moreover, the discipline courses (DC-I)

will further train you with the basic concepts of a particular

discipline. All students pursuing the Bachelor with Honours

degree shall study 20 discipline papers. However, if any

candidate exits earlier the number of courses will accordingly

be fewer. Another set of discipline papers (DC-II), for which

you will be allowed to choose at the commencement of the second year, will permit you all to

augment and satiate your quest for knowledge by opting for papers that complement your

learning in the principal discipline course (DC-I). An important point and a special feature to

note that is passing all six DC-II courses in one discipline would have an alternate choice for

post-graduation in that discipline in addition to their first discipline.

Applied Courses: You will be offered the applied courses (AC) in your concerned discipline

aimed to help you in applying the knowledge as a means for capability building. You will be

studying five application papers, which will be introduced in the second semester with a course

each in second to sixth semester.

If you will be interested in pursuing the four-year Honours programme, you will have to study

six papers in the second discipline. In the fourth year of the course, students will pursue

research-based papers and innovative projects, which will provide them with requisite skills

and prepare them for higher studies, teaching or reaching assignments across the globe.

How to get admissions in these colleges?

Delhi University has always been the first choice for the students who wish to pursue the

conventional courses after their high school. The University offers various undergraduate

courses in Faculty of Science awarding Honours Degree.

DU Admission-cum-Application Form

– University of Delhi invites both online

as well as offline applications for the

four-year undergraduate programmes

tentatively in the first week of June

every year. The issue and receipt of

registrations can be made through the

single (common pre-admission OMR)

application form for various courses in

the recognized colleges of the University.

merit list prepared according to the Class XII marks of applicants.

DU Online Admission Form – If you choose to apply Online for DU Admission Form, you must

follow the special instructions for filling in the Online Admission Form below –

The Online Pre-Admission Form is applicable to all the candidates including

General/OBC/SC/ST/PWD.

The Online Pre-admission form is common for all the courses listed in the form and

valid for all colleges except Stephen’s College and Jesus & Mary College. The candidates are advised to fill application forms for the respective courses that are

meant for their category only.

Any incomplete application will be summarily rejected.

No student will be allowed to take admission in two courses/colleges simultaneously.

DU Admission Eligibility – You need

to pass in 10+2 of the Central Board

of Secondary Education (CBSE) or

equivalent examination to be eligible

for admission. The admission will

however, depend on your marks and

cut-off announced by the colleges for

the various programmes in the

university. There is no minimum age

bar required for admissions to the

undergraduate courses offered in the

university.

DU Admission Cut-off – You will

have to remain present on the scheduled tentative date in the last week of June at the venue

along with the list of required documents, which include Class 10th and 12th mark sheets,

Class 12th Original Certificate, Character Certificate, Photographs, etc. The counselling

procedure may be carried in 3 or more phases as per the need.
