Please enjoy the new edition of the UC Department of Athletics Annual Report. This publication
is designed to embody the program’s progress, future and vision for the team that comprises the
support base for intercollegiate athletics on our wonderful campus. Teamwork is the key element
that truly is creating a positive climate in the department, on campus, and in the community.
Additionally, teamwork will be integral to the long-term success of this department and university.
Winning programs do not happen by accident. Alumni, friends, donors, sponsors, faculty/staff,
the student body, and volunteers who share the department’s vision to be the class of the BIG EAST
Conference are vital to our success. Together we form a powerful team, a team that allows the athletics
department to grow and achieve, to support our student-athletes on and off the playing field, to
generate enthusiasm for the university, to nurture excitement both on campus and off, and to build
a sense of spirit that will benefit virtually every constituent group associated with the university.
The Bearcats have made significant progress during the past year and we continue to work hard to
meet our CATAPULT goals to succeed athletically (Championships), in the classroom (Academics),
and throughout the community (Together). Our future is bright and with continued teamwork we
will produce a program of which we can all be proud.

At the 2007 Indoor Championships, Hein cleared 5’10-3/4” to earn the 16th finishing position.
Women’s outdoor track and Field – Ashley Wilhelm and renee hein, ncAA championshipsSeniors Renee Hein and Ashley Wilhelm closed out their stellar careers competing in the 2007 Outdoor Track and Field Champion-ships, June 6-9. Hein participated in the high jump for the fourth time in her career, while Wilhelm made her first career NCAA appear-ance, competing in the heptathlon. Ashley Wilhelm

men’s soccer (11-6-2, 7-3-1) – ncAA First roundThe men’s soccer team became the first UC team to win a BIG EAST team championship, capturing the Red Division title. After earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, the Bearcats dropped a 3-0 decision in the first round at Northwestern.
Football (8-5, 4-3) – international Bowl championsCincinnati finished fourth in the BIG EAST during the regular season, earning a berth in the inaugural International Bowl. While in Toronto, the Bearcats sprinted to a 24-0 lead over Western Michigan, holding on for a 27-24 victory. The tri-umph was UC’s second bowl win in the last three seasons.

• FreshmanDan Osterbrock evolved into one of the BIG EAST’s best hurlers, ranking among the league’s leaders in wins (T-3rd, 9), opponents batting average (4th, .223), strike-outs (T-7th, 82) and innings (10th, 94.1). For his efforts during the year, the Cincinnati native was tabbed a first team ABCA all-region and all-BIG EAST selection.
• CenterfielderTony Campana set a UC single-season record stealing 60 bases while hitting .329 with a career-best 18-game hit streak.
• Josh Harrison had another outstanding season hitting .327 and ranking among the BIG EAST leaders in runs (T-6th, 59), doubles (T-9th, 17), home runs (T-12th, 9), RBI (10th, 56), slug-ging percentage (9th, .545), sacrifice flies (1st, 9) and stolen bases (T-7th, 21).
• Head Coach Brian Cleary got his 250th victory with a win over Chicago State on March 18. Cleary ranks second in school history in coaching wins with 258, trailing only the legendary Glenn Sample.
BAsketBAll (Men)(11-19,2-14BIGEAST)
• Head Coach Mick Cronin introduced seven new faces to a roster that returned four Bearcats with playing experience during his first year as bench boss.
• The newcomers accounted for 77 percent of the minutes played and 84 percent of the scoring production during the 2006-07 season.
• Deonta Vaughn was the second-leading scorer among BIG EAST freshman this season, averaging 14.5 points per game. He also concluded the season as the second-highest scoring freshman in Cincinnati history, behind only Dontonio Wing-field.
• Bearcats’forwardJohn Williamson finished his first season at UC fourth in the BIG EAST in offensive rebounds (3.4) and 11th in total rebounds (7.3).
• Cincinnati closed the season having won five if its last six overtime contests, extending back to the 2003-04 season.
BAsketBAll (woMen)(15-14,6-10BIGEAST)
• The big news from the 2006-07 season was, after 21 years at the helm and 393 career wins, Head Coach Laurie Pirtle retired on March 17, 2007.
• January 17, 2007, made Fifth Third Arena history when women’s basketball had its first sell out crowd with an official attendance of 13,176, which was the largest crowd to ever see a regular season women’s basketball game in the city of Cincinnati.
• Treasure Humphries became the 21st UC women’s basket-ball player to reach the 1,000 point mark.
• The Bearcats posted a +8.9 rebounding margin, which was second in the BIG EAST (behind only Connecticut) and 10th in the nation.
CRoss CountRy (Men/woMen)(Men–9thBIGEAST,Women-11thBIGEAST)
• Sophomore Megan Knapp, and junior John Dixon took the Bearcats’ top finishing places once again at the BIG EAST Championships. Dixon finished 39th in a time of 24:40 and Knapp finished in 58th place with a time of 22:47.
• October 6, 2006, the UC men finished second in a very com-petitive All-Ohio Championships.
• The teams finished out the season with a strong finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship in Bowling Green, Ohio. For UC, the men’s team took a 10th-place finish out of 31 teams and the women finished 11th out of 30 teams.

• Playing the third-most difficult schedule in the country, the Bearcats faced five top-10 teams and six bowl participants on their 12-game slate.
• UC finished their home schedule with a huge win over then-No. 7 Rutgers, the highest ranked foe ever to fall at Nippert Stadium.
• With the abrupt departure of third-year coach Mark Danto-nio prior to the bowl game, UC quickly hired Brian Kelly to lead the Bearcats. With only 34 days to prepare, Kelly used the 2006 system to take home a season ending victory in the inaugural International Bowl over Western Michigan 27-24.
• First team all-BIG EAST performers Terrill Byrd (DT), Kevin McCullough (LB), and Dominic Ross (SS) helped lead the way for an experienced UC defense.

Golf (Men/woMen)(Men–Tied4thBIGEAST,Women–5thBIGEAST)
• Janet Carl was presented the Ladies Professional Golf Asso-ciation (LPGA) National Coach of the Year, in September 2006.
• The women’s golf team scored one of its biggest victories ever when it captured the team title at the Lady Irish Invitational, Sept. 23-24, 2006. The tournament field was a strong one, con-sisting of six teams ranked between 25th and 100th nationally.
• The unquestioned leader and top player for the men’s team was senior Geoff Newman. In 13 tournaments, Newman fin-ished in the top-20 seven times, with a pair of top-five tallies to his credit.
• At the Rio Verde Invitational (March 9-11), junior Hillery Wilson broke her own school record and established a new tournament best with a round of 68. With four wins and five other top-10 finishes, Wilson was ranked 182nd nationally by Golfweek at the end of the season.
RowinG(4thBIGEAST)
• At the SIRA Championships for the first time in school history all of the varsity boats were able to compete in the ‘A’ Grand finals.
• At the Central/South Regionals where the Bearcats were up against more than 20 top-ranked teams, they were able to take home first and second places in the ‘C’ and ‘D’ finals.
• In the BIG EAST Championship the varsity eight team took home fifth place in the Grand finals with a time of 6:53.32 as well as the second varsity four placing fourth in 8:02.75. The second varsity eight was able to take a second place finish with a time of 6:52.5, along side the varsity four team making their best time of the season, placing second in 7:32.1.
• The Bearcats also enjoyed two top-notch regattas in the fall, the Head of the Iowa Regatta and the Head of the Hooch Re-gatta. In Iowa, the women earned numerous top-20 finishes and followed that up with top-25 marks at the Hooch.
soCCeR (Men)(11-6-2,7-3-1BIGEASTRedDivisionChampions,NCAATournament)
• The Bearcats won the first team BIG EAST Championship by capturing the league’s Red Division crown and made its third appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
• After a big win at St. John’s, the Bearcats made a splash in the national polls, being ranked as high as No. 15 by Soccer America.
• Head Coach Hylton Dayes, in his sixth season at UC, reached a coaching milestone by picking up his 150th career victory.
• Omar Cummings received first team all-BIG EAST Confer-ence honors as well as being selected to the NSCAA/adidas all-American team.
soCCeR (woMen)(7-9-2,3-7-1BIGEAST)
• The Bearcats posted a four-win improvement and were just one goal away from a spot in the BIG EAST Championships with a starting lineup that consistently featured seven fresh-men or sophomores.
• Head Coach Meridy Glenn finished the year just one victory shy of reaching 250 for her career. Glenn is already the second-winningest female coach in Division I women’s soccer history.
• Freshman keeper Andrea Kaminski was fourth in the BIG EAST with 97 saves and seventh with six shutouts.
• UC was awarded the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the 2005-06 school year at the organizations national conven-tion. The Bearcats held a 3.26 GPA to qualify for the honor.
swiMMinG AnD DivinG (Men/woMen)(Men5-7,1-2BIGEAST,Women2-10,0-3BIGEAST)
• Three UC records were broken. The men’s 200 back and 200 medley relay and the women’s 400 free relay. The 200 back and 400 free relay were both broken on the final day of the BIG EAST Tournament.
• In 11 meets this season, Marcel Kleiner won the 100 free five times, the 50 free four times and the 200 free twice. Bjorn Mates won the 200 back six times, while also posting wins in the 100 back, 100 fly, 200 free, and 200 IM.
• On the women’s side, Randi Vogel won seven races in five events, Gerdien de Jong won four 100 free titles and two in the 50 free and Annelie Jonsson won four 200 breast races.
• Senior Gerdien de Jong also reached the NCAA ‘B’ standard in the 100 free at the Miami Invitational with a time of 50.87 seconds to win the event.
tennis (woMen)(12-10,6-4BIGEAST)
• One year after posting a single victory, the Cincinnati netters tallied a 12-10 record and advanced to the BIG EAST Confer-ence Tournament for the first time in the program’s history.
• The Bearcats won 96 singles matches this year exceeding last year’s total of 44 and 59 dual match single wins is 44 greater than last year’s total of 15.
• UC made a point to win against their region rivals Miami (OH) and Xavier. On Jan. 26 UC looked dominant against Miami (OH) taking a 5-2 victory and then on Feb. 21, the Bearcats out-dueled Xavier by a count of 4-3.
• After missing most of the past two seasons, senior Hannah Hinton returned in the fall and carded a 17-13 mark that included a 16-9 finish as the top singles player.
tRACk AnD fielD (Men/woMen)
• Ashley Wilhelm set three school records and became just the second female track and field athlete in school history to earn all-America honors and the first to be named an out-door all-American. She set school marks in the heptathlon (5,515), long jump (20’2”) and javelin (139’2”) and also owns the school record in the pentathlon (3,788).
• Renee Hein, Tara Meier and Brittany Klima brought home BIG EAST Championships in 2007. Meier was the indoor pole vault champ, while Klima completed the pole vault indoor-outdoor sweep with an outdoor pole vault title. Hein won a pair of titles, capturing the indoor and outdoor high jump titles and made her fourth appearance at the NCAA Championships, the most ever by a UC female track and field athlete.
• Andrew Smith and Ashley Wilhelm were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic all-district first and second teams, respectively. Smith carried a 3.82 GPA in industrial management, while Wilhelm held a 4.0 GPA in the secondary education graduate program.
• Dominique Davis was named an Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar, which recognizes minority student-athletes that ex-cel not only in their sport, but in the classroom as well, while also being a positive figure in the community.
volleyBAll(22-7,10-4BIGEAST)
• Head Coach Reed Sunahara guided the Bearcats to the program’s 12th consecutive 20-win season. With another strong recruiting class to join five returning starters the 2007 season should bring continued success to UC Volleyball.
• Led by Jessie Nevitt’s first team selection, a trio of Cincin-nati players were named to the all-BIG EAST squads. Nevitt was joined by seniors Myanna Hellsten and Noel Olson, who were both second team selections.
• Nevitt finished the season ranked first in the conference in blocks per game (1.68) and second in hitting percentage (.397).
• Freshman Jaime Frey recorded at least 20 digs in eight of 14 BIG EAST matches to set a league record for most 20+ dig performances in league play.

wARMinG heARts As winteR Chills
The University of Cincinnati Department of Athletics and the Hamilton County Special Olympics teamed up to bring “Fast Friday: Hamilton County Athletes Unite” to UC’s campus on Friday, April 20. Sponsored by CPAWS and Rally Cats, the outreach presented the opportunity for over 100 special needs children and adults to interact with UC students and student-athletes on the Cincinnati campus.
“I think this was a great opportunity to blend our student-athletes in with the regular student population through community outreach right here on campus,” says UC Director of Compliance and CPAWS advi-sor Maggie McKinley. “We were thrilled to have the Hamilton County Special Olympics visit our campus and interact with our student-athletes. This was a great event for everyone involved.”
Throughout the day, participants got the chance to mingle with and get autographs from the Bearcats’ student-athletes in attendance. The event also
included track and field activities in Armory Fieldhouse, followed by lunch and games on Sheakley Lawn at the Richard E. Lindner Center Varsity Village. The
participants were treated with a surprise visit from Bearcat. The day helped build the relationship between Hamilton County Special Olympics and the University of
Cincinnati.
A speCiAl DAy foR speCiAl Guests
The University of Cincinnati men’s soccer team spread warmth during the chilly winter season, providing the homeless of Cincinnati with care packages through Operation Warm-Up.
The Hillel Jewish Student Center organized the project, which assembled and delivered over 8,000 packages that included food, toiletries, blankets, clothing and medicine to those in need.
Over 200 volunteers, mostly students from UC, Xavier and Northern Kentucky, donated their time and effort for the project. Packages were delivered to areas such as Over the Rhine, English Woods, Avondale, West End, and Walnut Hills as well as area drop-in centers, Hughes High School in Clifton and Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen.
“This was a great opportunity for our program to give back to the community in a meaningful way,” said assis-tant coach Dan Ensley. “We are very blessed and fortunate for everything that we have and do on a daily basis. It really puts
our soccer and college careers in perspective when we get a chance to see what those less fortunate deal with in their day-to-day lives.”
The University of Cincinnati Athletics’ CATAPULT plan, unveiled prior to the 2006-07 school year by Director of Athletics Mike Thomas, challenges each program throughout the department to become a leading member of the Cincinnati community.
“It was wonderful to have the UC men’s soccer team with us,” said project coordinator Jessica Segal, a program assistant with the Hil-lel Student Center. “They worked very hard and had a genuine interest in helping out. Even the coaches pitched in. It was really great to have them here.”
