writings, plus comparisons to judicial responses to Lincoln’s policies.

Not Just the Facts: Telling about the American South. 100 Units.• The great jurist Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. once observed that "The main part of intellectual education is

not the acquisition of facts but learning how to make facts live." This course concerns itself with the various ways people have striven to understand the American South, past and present. We read fiction, autobiography, and history (including meditations on how to write history). Main themes of the course include the difference between historical scholarship and writing history in fictional form; the role of the author in each, and consideration of the interstitial space of autobiography; the question of authorial authenticity; and the tension between contemporary demands for truthfulness and the rejection of "truth."

Dorms• The College Houses at the University of Chicago integrate faculty, graduate

student/staff Resident Heads, upperclass resident assistants, and a cadre of 40 to 104 students who live together, learn together, laugh together, and care for one another.

• UChicago’s 11 residence halls are home to 38 Houses—communities that eat, debate, and play together. Each House consists of a group of about 70 students sharing a cluster of residential rooms and common areas within the residence halls with their own traditions, own House Council, and resident staff. College Housing is your home base for UChicago life. Housing is guaranteed all four years and students find that some of their best mentors (and friends) are found in the College Houses.

• The University of Chicago College faculty believe that the College Houses play an important role in a student’s academic and social adjustment to the University. Thus, all first-year students are required to live in College Housing for their first academic year. Entering transfer students are welcome but not required to live in the College Houses.

• Off-Off Campus is the second oldest student improvisational theater troupe in the country with the first generation dating back to 1986.

• • The University of Chicago is the undisputed birthplace of

improvisational and sketch comedy. In the 1950's, a group of University Chicago students formed the Compass Players on campus, and in 1959, the group became The Second City. In 1986, U of C alum and Second City co-founder Bernie Sahlins (A.B. '43) returned to the University campus in order to begin a south side group to rival his north side creation.

• • Sahlins trained the first Generation of Off-Off Campus in the art of

sketch and improv comedy, and his knowledge and training regiment has been passed down through 27 generations of Off Off Campus. Since 1986 Off-Off Campus has entertained thousands of Chicagoans with its unmistakable mix of improv, sketch, and musical comedy.
