THERE IS A PROBLEM, WHAT SHOULD I DO??

Every 4-H club has a Community Club Leader, every project has a Project Leader, and every 4-H event has designated chairperson. If a problem occurs at club level, the first person you should contact is the club leader. Likewise, contact the project leader if something comes up at the project level. What about at events? If something comes up at a 4-H event, first talk to the 4-H volunteer leader who is chairing/organizing the event. In each of these cases, the volunteer may choose to handle the problem on their own, or contact Donna Wice, 4-H Coordinator, to help resolve the issue. What if something comes up at the fair? If your project leader is there, first talk to him/her. If it is a 4-H issue, you want to discuss it with Donna Wice. If it is a livestock issue, you can go to the Livestock Superintendent. If it is a Jr. Livestock Auction issue, contact the Auction committee’s President. The sooner a problem is discussed with the people in charge, the sooner is can be resolved. These people are all working together with 4-H leaders, and other volunteers to make 4-H events/activities a positive experience. They also appreci-ate positive comments and suggestions for change.

I AM 4-H

Author Unknown

Symbolic of the quiet valleys and gentle meadows in which I was born, I am a four leaf clover, in a verdant green, on a pure white field.

I drew my first breath in the resolve of responsible men And women to help American youth

Nurtured on the land. I now embrace the busy town.

My goal is to learn And my testament— to learn by doing

I am 4-H.

Over two million boys and girls are under my wings Twenty million others walked my ways in bygone years

My voice is heard in the halls of Congress And the President of the United States know my name.

I am a Citizen in the making. I am 4-H.

I’m old yet I’m forever young.

I’m local. I’m state—yet my philosophy has gone around the world. I am the International Farm Youth Exchange, a worker in the Peace Corps,

An explorer of careers and a student of public affairs. I am hand in hand with United States Department of Agriculture,

The Land-Grant University, my county government, my unselfish local Volunteer leader and the great industries of our nation.

I am 4-H.

I’m an Eskimo on the tundra by the Bering Sea, A boy on a tractor on the Great Plains, A girl with a lamb, a boy with a calf, A youngster with a seeing eye puppy,

A knock at your door to get out the vote, A future scientist,

Or a little girl’s first cake.

In quest of the pattern of life I bow my head in church

And with confidence look to the days that lie ahead of me, To this end, I have pledged my Head, Heart, Hand, and Health.

To greater loyalty, larger service, clearer thinking and better living. I am 4-H.

And with God’s help I will be a finer woman, or better man.

More Club News- Bootjack 49er’s by Elseana Skowronski On October 31, 2007 the Bootjack 49er’s 4-H club sponsored a booth for the Halloween carnival at the Mari-posa fairgrounds. Many different organizations had booths with games for children to play. There were lots of fun activities to do including a contest for the best jack-o-lantern and another for the best decorated booth. Our club won second place for the best booth, which awarded us $30 of the $126 we earned. We earned the rest of the money from the tickets we got from kids who played our games. Many of us came in the afternoon to help set-up our booth with decorations and games until it was time for the carnival to begin. Then we helped out with the games that we set up. The games people could play at our booth were a bean bag toss and a coffin dig. Every year Mariposa Safe Families sponsors this carnival to give kids a choice of a fun and safe environment to spend their Halloween. FOOD SAFETY TRAINING SLATED FOR JANUARY Margaret Collins, UC Nutrition & Consumer Science Advisor, will be having two trainings for “Make It Safe, Keep It Safe”. The first one will be held Saturday, January 12 at 10a and the other Wednesday, January 16 at 6p. Both trainings will be held at the office. We are requesting that two leaders and older youth from each club attend one of these trainings. IT IS FREE! If you have gone through the former training, you will need to attend this training to receive current informa-tion on food safety. Please let Donna know which training you will be attending by January 7th, so we can have enough copies printed. Evergreen's End of the Year Trip By S. Avaline R. McCord Evergreen 4-H traveled to Marine World for its end-of-year trip. Ninety percent of the members attended partly because it was so inexpensive. The normal cost just to get into Marine World is $48 plus food and gas money. Evergreen members went for $15 which included park entrance, a sub sandwich and chips from Vons and a train ride from Merced to Vallejo. Evergreen members met at 7a on October 6 in Merced. They rode Amtrak to the park where they then split into groups until five o'clock. Everyone enjoyed the animal shows and roller coasters, but the most popular thing was the train ride there and back. Although the trip was long, everyone thought it was worth whiled and would go again should the opportunity arise.

Use them often. ♦ Think Ahead– Know 4-H member’s opinions and be ready to meet changing situations. ♦ Set Goals– Make them high, but be sure to reach them. ♦ Take Advice– But do your own thinking. ♦ Get the Facts– Analyze them before you draw conclusions. ♦ Do Your Best– At all times. Record Keeping

Record keeping is important if you want credit for your 4-H activities. Record books are easier to complete if you keep track of all your activi-ties during the year in a notebook or on a calen-dar. Projects: Be sure to list meetings attended, what you did and learned at the meetings, livestock/poultry management records, and what you did on your own between meetings. You can write in a notebook, on a calendar or on a project form. You can photocopy the form for a scratch copy. Remember to list project expenses and income. Keep receipts in date order in an envelope so it will be easier to transfer to your report form. Watch each month for the PDR corner in the Spirit for where to put the various activities on the form if you plan to go for county record book awards.

Presentation/Favorite Foods Day Scheduled for March 8

Mark your calendar for March 8 for County Presentation/Favorite Foods Day. Start preparing your presentation, demonstration, or educational display for this fun day. Remember there are new categories such as share the fun, cultural arts, audio-visual, and of course, impromptu speeches. Public speaking has been a cornerstone of the 4-H program since its inception in the 20th century. 4-H Presentations are a special sharing time when members show the skills they’ve acquired to others. This day gives 4-H members the opportunity to show others what they have learned in their current 4-H projects and share their favorite food. More information will be available at club meetings along with entry forms and in the next 4-H Spirit. To get the 4-H Presentation Manual click on the http://ca4h.org website then to resources.
