Research expertiseOur degree courses draw upon the latest research in the field. Many of our staff have particular expertise in the field of innovation and change management, and specialist courses have been developed to engage with our cutting-edge research in this field.

Professional accreditationWherever possible, our courses lead to University awards backed by professional accreditation, thus making our graduates more employable and reducing the training cost for their employers.

Supporting businessBrighton Business School provides a range of courses to support local business and public sector organisations to develop their staff whether they are aspiring managers or specialists such as accountants or HR managers. In addition, the School offers bespoke courses for management development with a particular emphasis on change management and innovation management. It draws upon its research expertise to support the growth of the local economy through the application of research and management tools.

Tailored business coursesThe School has worked with external organisations to provide courses to meet the specific needs of the business. In some cases these include a specific award as an outcome, for example we worked with The Pension Regulator to design a bespoke award leading to a Graduate Certificate in Business. We have worked with other organisations, such as Barclays International, the Ministry of Defence and London Probation, to deliver courses whereby the employer or the participants can choose to build on their learning to gain an academic award.

The University of Brighton has been delivering management, business and professional education for over 40 years. Today, Brighton Business School provides a range of world-class undergraduate, postgraduate and executive courses for around 2,300 full-time and part-time students.

Sought after skillsOur courses are designed to develop the participants’ personal skills and knowledge base and enhance their employability. Our undergraduate courses all include a module on personal and professional skills, and students have the opportunity to take a one-year work placement in industry. Our postgraduate courses are designed to impart the latest thinking and research, provide tools for analysis and problem solving and encourage reflection on problems, processes and outcomes.

The Business School offers a wide range of courses ranging from the specialist, such as accounting, finance, human resource management, law, change managment, innovation and marketing, to the more general business, management and MBA courses normally associated with Business Schools.

Keeping courses relevant and innovativeWe endeavour to expose our learners to the latest theories and models from academic research and scholarship. We also create opportunities to engage with industry through placements, projects with commercial and charitable organisations, and guest speakers drawn from our alumni and the regional business community. The Business School has an ‘entrepreneur in residence’ and around fifty ‘dragons’ who develop business ideas and awareness among our undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Accredited by professional bodiesThe Business School also provides part-time courses focused on career development in the areas of accounting, human resource management, law and general management. These courses offer a university award and are accredited by professional bodies, such as the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, and the Chartered Management Institute.

Engaging with business and the community

We will work with you to develop a learning programme tailored to your requirements, this makes it cost effective as you are only spending money on training which is essential. The majority of our staff worked in industry prior to joining the university, enabling them to provide business insights based on real world experience.

The Business School has developed relationships with professional bodies representing managers, accountants, lawyers, HR and marketing specialists, and with representative bodies, such as the Institute of Directors, the local Chambers of Commerce and the Federation of Small Business. We run bi-annual networking events co-hosted by these organisations, with between 100 and 200 business professionals attending each event.

Our students work on real business problems brought to us by our business associates and by local voluntary organisations. They are judged on their proposed solutions by academics and sponsors.

Our work placement office provides the interface between the Business School and the wider community. We have over 100 students on one year placements with a wide variety of employers ranging from international companies to small and medium size businesses eg Audi, Rolls Royce, The Body Shop, IBM, Legal & General and Lloyds Banking Group. We are increasing the range of opportunities for our students to engage with business and the community through internships and volunteering opportunities.

All of our courses include engagement with business and the community. The mechanisms we use are varied and range from guest speakers and in-company projects to pitching business plans to a selection of ‘dragons’ drawn from the local business community and our alumni.

We are also pleased to be able to offer around fifty sponsored prizes for our best students many of whom are offered jobs with the sponsoring organisation.

Brighton Business School is well placed to develop your people, your products and your services. We have a proven track record of engaging successfully with business locally and nationally, and providing consultancy and bespoke development programmes.

  • Services for industry

Management tools and techniquesSix diagnostic audits are available, including tools for auditing Innovation Capability, Readiness to Innovate, and Innovation for Competitive Advantage. Sixteen organisations have taken advantage of our tools and techniques in order to improve their competitiveness through better innovation management. Participating organisations include Danfoss, Novo Nordisk, Mars Chocolate and Beiersdorf.

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs)A KTP is a relationship formed between a company and the University to facilitate the transfer of knowledge, technology and skills. Brighton Business School has managed 15 KTPs during the last five years, with graduates working under the supervision of academics to apply our innovation, management and marketing expertise in private business and non-governmental organizations. We have developed partnerships with organisations such as Kingfisher Wood Products, Firetesting Technology, Link Romania, and Blond Mcindoe Research.

Learning NetworksIn the past five years we have been involved in the creation and delivery of 35 learning and experience-sharing networks via the ProfitNet programme devised by CENTRIM. These have been operating in South East England, Ireland and South Africa. The programme has reached more than 1,000 SMEs who enhance their learning and profitability by sharing knowledge.

Training and Education Programmes in Innovation ManagementTraining programmes run by Brighton certified trainers, such as the Innovation Intervention Development Programme and the Managing Innovation Programme, improve the management of innovations amongst managers, innovation-trainers and consultants. Programmes have been run with companies such as Abbott Laboratories, Cisco Systems, IBM, Johnson Controls and Liberty Mutual. During the census period, the programmes have been run in over 10 countries by 54 certified trainers with over 5,000 managers attending.

Management WorkshopsSpecialist workshops, such as the Innovation Strategy Workshop, aimed at senior managers, employ advanced techniques and processes that enable new ideas to be found, selected and transformed into action programmes. They have been used in companies in many different countries including Elecmetal, Crisalerias Chile, Air Tanzania, the Dar Es Salaam Port Authority, Mega Woodcraft Ltd, Katana, and Tanzania Cigarettes Company.

Action Research and Learning ProgrammesCombining organisational development techniques with action learning, these programmes facilitate strategic change across partner organisations and challenge existing practices and attitudes amongst managers. The work is client led and has the trappings of consultancy but, with an active research agenda running alongside, the interventions generate wider knowledge and facilitate change. Such programmes have been commissioned directly by Barclays Bank, the London Probation Service, the Northern Ireland Heath Authority and the Royal Air Force.

Partnership ProgrammesWe have established partnerships with a range of institutions that link research to the customised development of practice in order to address key organisational challenges. The programmes have addressed topics such as developing leadership skills, improving lines of communication, and developing training initiatives to help employers capitalise on the talent of existing employees. Partners include The Pension Regulator, London Probation, FE Sussex, Barclays International, the Ministry of Defence and the RAF.

One major output of our research has been the development of tools and approaches that can be applied to improve business and organisational efficiency. Some of our key services are:

    Research excellence

A strategic emphasis on the co-production of knowledge with users has been a feature in all of our Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) returns. During the past ten years we have deepened and broadened our interactions with users through a series of strategic decisions and actions to convert our research results into services which are grounded in the research environment of our three research centres.

Our research services have directly impacted on a broad base of users in the UK and internationally such as private corporations (Barclays Bank, American Express), public bodies (the Brazilian Development Bank, the Tanzania government, the Royal Air Force, North West Ireland Health Authorities), non-profit organisations (Fundación Chile) and professional bodies (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development). In addition over 1,500 SMEs in south east England have been direct users of products based on our research.

The types of impact arising from our research address major economic and social challenges and include:• enhanced innovation management• improved managerial capabilities for

addressing organisational disruption• changed corporate and professional

    attitudes concerning employees and customers

    • increased turnover and gross profits for small businesses

    • improved access to public debate• new education and training materials

concerning innovation for use by business managers, professionals, employees and students.

Strategic Transitions for Youth Labour in Europe (STYLE) The Centre for Research on Management and Employment (CROME) is managing a three year EU project called Strategic Transitions for Youth Labour in Europe (STYLE). STYLE is a research project that aims to examine the obstacles and opportunities affecting youth employment in Europe. The project includes 25 research partners, an international advisory network and local advisory boards of employers, unions, policy makers and NGOS from over 20 European countries.

Brighton FuseCentre for Research in Innovation Management (CENTRIM) is delivering research and expert analysis for the Brighton Fuse project. This two-year research and development project will map, measure and assist Brighton’s creative, digital and IT cluster. Over 500 SMEs in the Brighton and Sussex creative/digital industries have engaged with us to share knowledge via workshops, conferences, and social media.

Our mission over the last 25 years has been to deliver translational research that has a direct and observable impact on the performance of professional practitioners and partner organisations in industry and the public sector.
