News UNIVERSITY OF AUCKLAND Dr Raewyn Dalziel and Dr Margaret Lamb have been promoted to senior lectureships. Two lecturers have been appointed: Dr Richard T. Phillips, a specialist in Chinese history from Cambridge University and Dr Roderick G. Phillips, a New Zealander with a doctorate from Oxford in French history. Mrs Ruth Ross has been appointed to the Arts Faculty Senior Research Fellowship while Dr E. H. McCormick who formerly held this fellowship has become an honorary research fellow in the department. He has recently com- pleted a book on Omai. Dr M. Kalous is presently on leave in West Germany on a Humboldt Fellow- ship. Dr P. Rousseau will be on short leave from early September at Wolfson College, Oxford, engaged on research in early church history. Dr M. R. Stenson will be visiting the Australian National University in the latter half of the year, on exchange with Dr A. J. S. Reid of the Department of Southeast Asian and Pacific History. Relatives, friends and colleagues of the late Dr A. N. B. Cotton have instituted a memorial fund from which will be awarded two annual prizes in seventeenth- century British history, or a related field. UNIVERSITY OF WAIKATO Dr Jeanine Williams and Dr L. H. Barber have been given permanent appoint- ments as lecturers. Professor Jensen has returned from leave spent mainly in the United States and Romania working on Eastern European economic and social history, with particular attention to transportation and its socio-economic effects. Dr D. G. S. Simes went on leave to the United Kingdom in August to continue his work on British Toryism for the period around the First Reform Bill. In October, Dr J. O. Miller was appointed to the newly-created post of Reader and Research Fellow in New Zealand History and Literature. Professor Clyde L. Manschreck of the Chicago Theological Seminar was in the department from March to June as a Visiting Post-Doctoral Fellow. During his stay Professor Manschreck taught an honours course in Reformation history. MASSEY UNIVERSITY OF MANAWATU Mr R. D. Gwynn has been promoted to senior lecturer, and is on leave in London until October. Dr W. P. N. Tyler is on leave in London and Jerusalem until June. Dr J. J. Dr A. M. Khan, senior lecturer in Asian history, died at the beginning of November 1975. Majed Khan was born in Calcutta in 1919 and studied and subsequently taught at Calcutta University and at Dacca University. In 1967 he came to Wellington with a joint appointment in History and Asian Studies. Dr Khan was a gentle and considerate colleague and a conscientious teacher. Closest to his heart were his religion and his family. He was a founder member of the International Muslim Association of New Zealand and his courses on Islam drew on an unwavering commitment and a lifetime of scholarly study.

Dr D. L. Mackay has been awarded a Nuffield Fellowship and is on leave in London for the first half of 1976. He is continuing his research on late eighteenth-century Imperial history and the activities of Sir Joseph Banks. Professor P. Munz is also on leave for the first half of 1976 and will be visiting Europe for the latter part of that period. Mr J. C. Davis goes on leave for the second half of the year. Dr Beaglehole spent the summer vacation in India working on the Indian Civil Service and the demission of British rule.

Mrs Beryl Hughes has been promoted to senior lecturer.

Mr W. J. Gardner gave the MacMillan Brown Memorial Lectures for 1975 on the theme of Colonial Universities in Australasia.
