Do you know your library vocabulary? Many people use libraries, but don’t know library jargon. Here are some common terms and acronyms we use at Mason and what they mean. Be sure to look at the “Library Lending Requests” diagram on the inside for a visual representation of CLS, ICL and ILL. Circulation – Borrowing. Circulation is the process of books moving from stacks to the hands of a willing reader and back again. This includes checking out a book, renewing a book and returning a book.

CLS – Stands for “Consortium Loan Service” for the Washington Research Library Consortium or WRLC. This is another lending program that allows the circulation of books and serials between the universities in the greater DC area.

eReserves – Reserve items that are housed online and accessed through the University Library homepage. You must have a password from your teacher to access these items.

ICL – Stands for “InterCampus Lending.” This service is InterLibrary Loan on a smaller scale where books and serials are shared between the four Mason campus libraries. You can have the books and articles you need sent to the campus where you study.

ILL – Stands for “InterLibrary Loan.” InterLibrary loan is a service available to Mason students, faculty and staff that allows them to borrow books from any library worldwide.

iMasonLibraries – An instant messaging resource for reference questions. You can use AIM, MSN Messenger, or Yahoo! Messenger to chat in real time with a Mason Librarian.

InfoGuides – A new research resource that has been compiled by Mason Subject Librarians to aid students and teachers in their course work. These guides are for research assistance and can contain recommended websites and databases, books, journals, theses and dissertations, maps, and current news on a large variety of subjects.

LC Classification System – A call number system developed by the Library of Congress and used in most higher education libraries. Books are arranged by subject assigned to a letter from A to Z followed by a series of numbers, designating the book’s location in the library stacks.

Reference – Information sources that are not circulated outside the library. Common reference sources include encyclopedias, handbooks, citation manuals and directories. Reference also refers to the friendly librarians that answer your research questions in person, on the phone, or online through iMasonLibraries chat.
