This is the final newsletter of the academic year, and for faculty, administrators and staff, April is indeed bittersweet. Students we have come to know and cherish will be leaving very soon to pursue their dreams. Each senior has made her/his mark on this institution, and this program. They will be missed, as thinkers, leaders, collaborators, classmates, peers, and friends. For those of you that are graduating, we wish you every success – sail high as proud alumni of Indiana State University. Congratulations to Keri Berg, selected by the students as the Honors Faculty of the Year. Her Coming of Age class in the Fall 2009 semester was a wonderful blend of perspectives, cultures, and disciplines, focused upon a common theme through literature. Her work is a highlight among the many intriguing classes that the Honors Program is privileged to feature. In these pages, you will read of scholarship awardees, honors society inductees, student leaders and students abroad. The new executive committees of the University Honors Student Association and President’s Scholars have been elected, an excellent cohort of peer advisors has been chosen, and the slate of stimulating Fall 2009 Honors classes is set. The next academic year for Honors at ISU is very bright. Exciting academic experiences await the incoming freshman class of scholars. As this academic year draws to a close, I would like to personally thank the many offices on this campus with which the Honors Program intersects – academic and administrative. Any successes enjoyed by this program and its students are truly shared by members of the full University community, many of whom have given thriftily of their time, energy, resources and patience for the benefit of a very special core of students (you know who you are and what you have given). Finally, I am personally indebted to the Honors staff, each of whom contributes a special dimension to the programs and services we provide students. I look forward to working with each of you in the coming year. 165 ALPHA LAMBDA DELTA INITIATES

HONORS SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS The University Honors Program annually awards several scholarships to help Honors students fund their academic endeavors. The 2009-2010 scholarship recipients were announced at the Honors Banquet on April 19, 2009. They are: Mileah Davis, awarded the Rebecca A. Johnson Honors Program Award for Nursing Students; Elizabeth Neely, awarded the Anne Bauer Jackson M.D. Honors Book Scholarship; Anna Smith, awarded the Richard J. Brett Memorial Scholarship for Study Abroad; and Nicole Smith, awarded the Richard J. Brett Memorial Scholarship for Study Abroad. Congratulations to the 2009-2010 Honors scholarship recipients! •

On April 5, 2009, the Indiana State University chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta hosted a ceremony initiating a record 165 freshmen into the organization (pictured above). Alpha Lambda Delta is a national honor society that recognizes students who excel academically during their first semester of college. To be eligible, students must earn a 3.5 or higher GPA, and be in the top 20 percent of their freshmen class. Initiates are recognized for their academic achievements, have leadership opportunities through the ISU chapter, and are eligible for scholarships through the national organization.

MEHA CONFERENCE: MARCH 27-29, 2009

4

Honors students and faculty from Indiana State University attended the 31st annual Mid-East Honors Association (MEHA) Conference in Kalamazoo, MI. the weekend of March 27-29, 2009. The theme of this year’s conference was "Thinking in Broad Strokes: Create Your Own Honors Masterpiece." The regional Honors conference is an opportunity for Honors students, faculty, and staff to network with individuals from other schools, gain presentation experience, and share ideas about Honors classes, programming, advising, and student organizations. Opportunities to give conference presentations as undergraduate students help make ISU’s Honors students more competitive when they later apply for employment and graduate schools.

At the MEHA Conference, ISU students gave a variety of presentations about their experiences in the University Honors Program. UHSA President Krystal Griffith and 2009-2010 President-Elect Ashley Walters talked about this year’s structural changes to increase leadership opportunities in the organization and encourage participation and attendance. Honors Peer Advisors Alison Gehring, Jenalee Cooksey, and Logan Fulford discussed the success of the Honors Peer Advisor program and the changes that are planned to further develop it for next year. Andrew Borden, Cody Hedges, Analyssa Noe, Jenalee Cooksey, Krystal Griffith, and Ashley Walters shared their research projects from the GH 301E: The Quest for Democracy course. Several individuals from ISU were also elected to MEHA leadership positions. Honors Director Greg Bierly was elected MEHA President, Honors Faculty Linda Maule will continue as Executive Secretary, Krystal Griffith was elected Student Vice President, and Ashley Walters was chosen to be a student representative. The four of them will work closely with individuals from Honors programs at other colleges and universities in the region to plan the 2010 MEHA Conference in Louisville, KY.

2009-2010 HONORS PEER ADVISORS

The 2009-2010 Honors Peer Advisors (left to right): Robert Compton, Beth Neeley, Jenalee Cooksey, Ashley Walters, Krystal Griffith, Kelli Lueken, and Justin Todd. Not pictured: Logan Fulford.

The University Honors Program has hired eight new Honors Peer Advisors for the 2009-2010 academic year. The Honors Peers Advisors are experienced Honors students who mentor new Honors students, actively recruit prospective Honors students, and promote participation in the University Honors Program. Each Honors Peer Advisor is assigned 15-20 freshmen Honors students, with whom they maintain regular email contact offering advice, answering questions, and providing information about upcoming Honors events. They also organize social activities for their individual groups, and have a presence at larger-scale Honors events. The Honors Peer Advisors are uniquely suited to be freshmen mentors, as they know first-hand what it is like to be a motivated student, take Honors classes, live on campus, participate in extra-curricular activities, utilize effective time management, etc. The 2009-2010 Honors Peer Advisors are excited to share their experiences and help other Honors students make successful transitions.

The University Honors Student Association (UHSA) participated this April in the American Cancer Society’s 2009 Relay for Life. Relay for Life is an annual event that occurs all across the country to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those lost to the disease, and raise money for cancer research. Team members take turns walking or running around a track, and try to keep at least one person on the track at all times. This year, groups from Indiana State University, Rose-Hulman Institute of Techology, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, and Ivy Tech Community College joined together on the Rose-Hulman campus to walk from 6:00pm on Friday, April 3 until 6:00am on Saturday, April 4. UHSA members raised money individually from their friends and families, and also sold purple rice krispie treats shaped like moons and stars (inspired by the Relay for Life logo) during the event. Eleven Honors students walked as a part of the UHSA team.

RELAY FOR LIFE 2009

The University Honors Student Association raised over $1200 for the American Cancer Society.

AFTER IMAGES: VOLUME 2 After Images is Indiana State University's Honors journal for the publication of student, creative works. Drawing on the notion of afterimage: a mental or visual image that is retained by the senses and produces a lasting sensation, the journal seeks to provide a forum for student expression, promoting art and creative writing at Indiana State University. The journal is run by Indiana State University Honors students and accepts submissions from all current undergraduate Indiana State University students.

The University Honors Program is proud to announce the release of the second volume of After Images, featuring creative works from Rachel McConnell, Lowell Torres, Caitlin Whittington, Danek Znika, Amber Shatto, Aubrey Uebelhor, Liz Wallace, Sarah Mihich, and Megan Porter. Copies of the journal are available for purchase in the University Honors Program Office (on the Rhoads Hall Mezzanine).

If you are interested in being a part of the After Images student staff or in contributing your creative work for the 2010 volume, please contact the Faculty Advisor, Dr. Keri Berg, via email at [email protected].
