YEAR AT A GLANCE FOR GRAD 2016 SEPTEMBER

Ensure that you have 80 credits to meet BC Grade 12 graduation requirements (accumulation from grade 10 to 12). Ms. Romano will check this with you in October.

Confirm that the classes you are currently enrolled in meet both general and program specific admissions requirements for the post-secondary institution(s) or program(s) you are planning to apply to. If you are taking on-line courses and wish to use them in the calculation of your competitive admission average, please note: UBC: 100% completion by February 1, 2016; SFU: 100% completion by April 30, 2016. Check with your post-secondary institution(s) of choice regarding on-line course policies.

Make last minute course changes with Ms. Romano if necessary.

If you wish to apply to UBC for the Fall 2016, application open August 17, 2015 and closes January 31, 2016.

Ensure you have a professional email address for post-secondary correspondence.

Compile and document your achievements and awards to assist you in your application for post-secondary institutions and scholarships.

Ensure you have an updated resume.

If you are considering American universities, write the SAT as soon as possible. Aim for October if you are applying for programs for early decision or early action. Register online at www.collegeboard.org. Check out the SAT test centres in the Lower Mainland. Prince of Wales Secondary and York House are the closest test centres.

OCTOBER

Explore and research post-secondary options. Research application procedures, deadlines and key dates. Here are some websites to help start your research:

o U. Hill Career Services Blog: https://uhillcareercentre.wordpress.com/ o NEW! myBlueprint.ca (one of the features of this program is a post-secondary planner). Please check with Ms. Romano or Mrs. Lee for

details o Career Cruising: www.careercruising.com. See or contact Mrs. Lee if you need the username and password to log in o For BC: Education Planner: www.educationplanner.ca o For Ontario: Council of Ontario Universities - http://cou.on.ca/statistics/cudo.aspx o For Atlantic: Association of Atlantic Universities - http://www.atlanticuniversities.ca/statistics/atlantic-common-university-data-set o For U.S.: Big Future (College Board) - https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org

Peterson’s: https://www.petersons.com Univsource: http://www.univsource.com

Start applying to post-secondary institutions. Many post-secondary institutions in Canada open for registration in October. Apply to five or six post-secondary institutions including a college. For most colleges, admission and course registration are based on your application date. So apply early! Anyone who is planning to attend university, it is highly recommended that you apply to at least one college. Have a back-up plan.

Ensure you meet the deadlines for accepting offers of admission and paying acceptance deposits. APRIL

Follow-up with the institution if you have any outstanding questions (e.g. marks, course planning, fees, etc.).

If required, make arrangements to write the Language Proficiency Index Test (LPI) or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY INDEX (LPI) What is the purpose of the LPI and which institution(s) require or accept LPI scores? The purpose of the LPI is to provide information about an individual’s competency in English. Note: the LPI is not an admission requirement, but rather a means to assess which English courses you may register in your first year. For a complete list, visit https://www.lpitest.ca/about/what-groups-use-lpi-scores. What does the LPI test? It tests your functional literacy. The test is 2.5 hours and consists of four parts: Sentence Structure, English Usage, Reading Comprehension A & B and Essay Writing. For more info, visit https://www.lpitest.ca. Can I be exempted from writing the LPI?

UBC: Students must obtain a Term 2 grade in English 12 of at least 80% or final blended grade of 75% (school mark and provincial exam mark).

SFU: Students need to obtain a final grade (blended grade) in English 12 of at least 75%.

Langara: Final grade in English 12 of at least 80% required are exempted from writing the LPI or LET (Langara English Test). When should I write the LPI and how much does it cost? It is recommended that Grade 12 students write the LPI in April in order to ensure the English Language Requirements is met for the university or college to which the student has applied and prior to registering for the college/university English course in June. If you leave it too late, all of the LPI test sittings may be full. Do not take the chance of not being able to take first year English and you may delay your program completion by up to a year. Cost: $109.00 + tax. TOEFL AND IELTS Please check the institution’s website for a list of acceptable tests. The TOEFL and IELTS are the most widely recognized English Language Competency Tests. Registration is done on-line (IELTS: http://www.ielts.org; TOEFL: http://www.etscanada.ca/toefl). UBC REQUIREMENTS: Minimum score for the TOEFL and IELTS tests: - http://you.ubc.ca/admissions/elas/tests-elas TOEFL TOEFL Internet-based test Overall score: 90 (Reading: 22, Listening: 22, Writing: 21, Speaking: 21) TOEFL TOEFL Paper-based test with the TWE (Test of Written English) 55 each for Reading, Listening and Writing (4.0 on TWE) IELTS (International English Language Testing System) 6.5 with no part less than 6.0 SFU REQUIREMENT: TOEFL TOEFL IBT Overall score of 88 or better with a minimum score of 20 in each of the four components (Listening, Speaking, Writing and Reading) IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no part less than 6.0.

POST-SECONDARY INSTITUTIONS (PSI) SELECTIONS FORM Students can provide their transcript information to a number of post-secondary institutions by completing an electronic Post-Secondary Institutions Selection Form (PSI) online. Students only need to complete their PSI Selections Form once in the current school year. If you complete the PSI Selections Form by May 1, 2016, your interim and final transcript will be automatically forwarded to the post-secondary of choice. For instructions, visit the U. Hill Secondary Career Services blog. TRANSCRIPT REQUESTS (INSTRUCTIONS FROM JULIE LEE, RECORDS CLERK, UNIVERSITY HILL SECONDARY) Your University Application: 1. Universities registered on your PSI will be able to upload directly from the Ministry of Education in May and July and transcripts are not necessary. 2. Check your application status and transcript submission requirements. 3. If the university indicates you can self-report, then use the information on your report card. Please do not duplicate by also sending them a paper

copy of your transcript. 4. If the university requires you to send a certified copy to either scan and upload or an official certified sealed paper copy for you to mail:

First double check your report card and your counsellor to ensure your marks, on-line courses and credits are accurate and up-to-date. If a mark correction is or was needed, talk to your teacher and check with your counsellor to ensure the change has been updated in the computer system

Only if you have confirmed and are completely satisfied that we have all the correct marks and credits, should you complete the Blue VSB document Request (available at the office)

Filling out your VSB Document Request accurately so your transcripts can be processed quickly: 1. Fill out your student # and legal and preferred names on the blue VSB Document Request. 2. Specify whether you want a copy to scan or sealed paper copy for you to mail by each university listed. 3. Standard Transcripts will show Gr 10-12 course marks. The school does not mail or email out copies of transcripts What if I happen to be out of town or out of the country and can’t personally come into the office? Email the office your request. However because this is a legal and confidential document, we require the following: 1. Provide your full legal and preferred name. 2. Attach a scanned copy of your ID. 3. Specify whether you want a copy to scan or sealed paper copy for you to mail by each university listed.

4. Standard Transcripts will show Gr 10-12 course marks. Please specify if the university has any special requirements i.e. include grade 8 & 9 marks etc.

To check if the institution is a Common Application member, visit www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/Members.aspx.

The maximum number of U.S./International applications that Ms. Romano will complete is six (6). Any more than this means your search is too broad and needs to be narrowed. Common Applications completed online only count as one (1) application.

Only under extenuating circumstances, and with plenty of notice, will Ms. Romano be able to fill in additional U.S./International application forms.

Remember you can only attend one college or university next year, so spend your time wisely, and carefully narrow your search to your top three choices.

Give teachers a minimum of three weeks to fill in U.S. application forms and to provide letters of reference. The more time you give the teachers, the better quality your letters of reference will be.

Provide stamped, addressed envelopes and fill in as much of your personal information as possible before giving these forms to someone to fill in for you. We will NOT fill in your personal demographic information for you. Please ensure that you have followed the instructions.
