Eagle Scout Project Planting at UHS submitted by Irene Lueckel

A ParentTeacherStudentOrganization Publication

It was a warm and sunny day on Saturday, May 28 when A.J. (Raymond) Adams led a large team of Boy Scouts and adult volunteers for his Eagle Scout project at UHS. They “beautified” the area around the school’s entry sign by planting ten Golden Cypress shrubs, ten Mid-night Wine Weigela shrubs, and 2 flowering Hibiscus plants. In addition, the team scrubbed clean the UHS stone sign. Throughout the day, there were 31 volunteers in total who helped

on this project.

Much of the important “ground work” is not entirely visible after the fact. To enable the shrubs to remain healthy and grow into the future, the group spent a lot of time and effort first improving the planting area by weeding, digging an edging barrier around the planting area, mixing in soil improvements, and covering the entire area with new mulch. It looks wonderful and will continue to improve as the small shrubs grow to maturity!

A.J. initially presented his project proposal at the PTSO meeting on May 12; the PTSO ap-proved the project and committed $500 to help cover the costs of materials. The project was originally scheduled to take place on June 4 but was moved to May 28th when A.J. found out he was named 1st All State for lacrosse and was scheduled to play in the All Star lacrosse game that day. Congratulations to A.J. on both of his accomplishments!

Congrats to the Academic Bowl Team submitted by Mr. McQuain Advisor

The University High School Academic Bowl team re-cently competed against teams from across the Unit-ed States in Questions Unlimited’s 3-2-1 computer-based competition. The Hawks finished 20th among the 147 teams competing from across the entire na-tion and fifth among the teams from West Virginia and the contiguous states. The pyramidal contest fea-

tured answering 240 questions, many of which had vis-ual or audio clues.

The team consisted of Noah Spencer, Sam Mathers, Thomas Lueckel, Anthony Chen, William Gu, Melanie Lyons, Griffin Nordstrom, Ben Kiehl, and Josh Harman. The team is coached by David McQuain.

St. Patricks Day 2016 may have been a few months ago, but it will forever be a wonderful memory for 146 high school students from Morgantown, West Virginia. Four buses were loaded that day around 3pm with the students, 20 chaperones, 2 teachers, one alum and one student teacher. Where were they headed? To Orlando Florida for the parade of a life-time.

The University High School Marching Band was cho-sen to participate in the evening Electrical Parade at Walt Disney World. Only three high schools were chosen for the Saturday evening parade. Thousands of spectators watched the schools proudly march by playing their favorite tunes. UHS chose a Disney medley of favorite movie tunes to play. To set us apart from the other bands, UHS proudly played the Pride of West Virginia’s Country Roads as part of their

repertoire. The WVU music department generously loaned them the arrange-ment.

UHS Alumni who were at Walt Disney World for vaca-tion and were unaware that their alma mater was repre-sented in the parade were pleasantly surprised and proudly cheered as the band marched by them. Even a few Morgantown High Alums cheered the band on as they showed off their stuff in Orlando.

Many thanks goes to the numerous friends and compa-nies that donated this year to the band. All the stu-

dents who wanted to go but couldn’t afford it were able to take this trip of a lifetime.

The University High School band has gone to Florida every four years for many years now. This year was different. Mark Palmer, the Director of Music, decid-ed to submit a video of the band this Fall in hopes of being selected to participate in a parade during the four day trip to Florida. When he got word that the band was selected to be in a parade he was thrilled. He later found out the parade they were selected for was the most prestigious. The evening Electric Pa-rade on Saturday evening during peak season. Truly thousands of people saw the band perform. The route was a little bit more scenic than High Street in Morgantown. It began at the entrance to Magic King-dom towards Cinderella’s Castle and exited thru Frontierland.

If you have ever been to Disney for the evening pa-rade you know the floats and characters have lights on them. The UHS Band Boosters took on that chal-lenge to light up the students as they marched. Lights were sewn onto every uniform, as well as many of the drums, to help the band be seen. A local

design firm even printed special “U” ‘s for the bass drums to promote the UHS spirit. The band looked great and sounded great. They truly represented West Virginia well.

As an added bonus, the award winning Jazz Band, led by Neil King, took part in a Jazz It Up Workshop where the students learned and were conducted by professional Disney clinicians with jazz versions of classic Disney se-lections.

UHS News

Thank you to all of the UHS parents who have supported the Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO) and who have

given their time and energy to UHS. You are UHS! You are parents and supporters who understand the importance of

being involved in the school… and you are parents who understand how your involvement enriches the school's culture.

This year, the UHS PTSO continues to have an active and supportive community of parents, students, administrators,

and teachers at UHS. Also, the constant support of Dr. Burgess, and her staff, as active members of the PTSO, has

been invaluable to the success and quality of the PTSO organization.

As the 2015-2016 academic year ended in June at UHS, the PTSO was gearing up for next year. Several PTSO leaders

are continuing to be involved as officers, committee chairpeople, and volunteers for the 2016-2017 school year, and

several new parents are bringing fresh ideas. (Personally, I am very grateful to the impressive leaders taking responsibil-

ity for the upcoming year!)

PTSO Officers for 2016-2017:

President — Bonnie Snider

Vice President — Lisa Kukura

Secretary — Julia Ramberg

Treasurer — Leann Hanshew (newly elected)

Committee Chairpeople:

Student Recognition — Jill Wolter

Facebook Administrator — Charmin Lerfald (newly elected)

Thank you to the following UHS parents who were very active PTSO members for several years. These parents have

graduating seniors: Jeanne Parsons, Liz Peace, Robin Barnett, and Karen Gerbo.

As we ended the year, the PTSO committees were busy at work. Below is a list of their accomplishments:

Senior Class Activities Committee — 1) Volunteers helped with set up for the Senior Picnic. 2) Several parents from the

PTSO helped to support the Senior Class After Prom, a community and parent-sponsored event, which was held at the

WVU Rec Center after the 2016 Senior Prom. After Prom volunteers reported it as having the most senior class involve-

ment in recent years, and a very successful donation outcome from the Morgantown community. 3) The Senior Class

Gift of a tree will be implemented by the PTSO with a planted tree and a supportive plaque.

Teacher Appreciation Committee — Each day during Teacher Appreciation Week in early May, this committee hosted

several meals, gifts and raffles; teachers were offered relaxing neck massage and beauty consults, etc. Teachers were

very grateful to this committee for the support. Many of the meals and gifts were donated by UHS parents and Morgan-

town businesses.

Beautification Committee — 1) Six trees were planted along the entrance area of UHS with a gift from the Wood Family.

2) The PTSO worked with UHS senior and Eagle Scout candidate A.J. Adams, and with UHS Principal Dr. Burgess, on

landscaping the area around the UHS brick entry sign on Bakers Ridge Road. The committee supported this project with

$500 and volunteer time.

Back-To-School Packet Project — Each year the PTSO provides a packet for UHS parents for the 2016-2017 year. This

includes important introductory information for new parents, informative school history, UHS awards, contact numbers,

donation information, and PTSO committee volunteer information. A donation mailer is also organized for October. If

you are interested in volunteering to put together the packets and mailer, contact Bonnie Snider([email protected]).

Student Recognition Committee — This committee is working with contractors to replace parts of the current Wall of Ex-

cellence. Details to be announced.

Student Enrichment Committee — Several career presentations were offered during "club" periods in the UHS academic

year. These included career advisory presentations from local professionals including: Medical and Law careers, The

Arts, "Show Biz", and Engineering.

Digital Literacy & Citizenship submitted by KellyAnn Allen

At UHS we cover lessons in Digital Literacy & Citizenship with our students. Each grade covers a specific lesson during the year. Below is the family tip sheet which summarizes the key points of the lesson and how to discuss plagiarism and priva-cy with your teens. For additional resources and tips go to www.commonsensemedia.org.

FAMILY TIP SHEET: Common Sense on Plagiarism and Piracy

What’s the Issue?

New technologies make it easy for people to download and use creative work, in many different ways, such as movies, mu-sic, articles, books, and art. But in a fast-paced online culture, it’s easy to forget about copyright law, which brings up two important issues: plagiarism and piracy. Plagiarism means using someone else’s ideas or words without crediting the source and pretending they’re your own. Piracy is the unauthorized use, reproduction, or sharing of copyrighted or patent-ed material – typically music, movies, TV shows, and software. Even though some teens may feel they have the right to take and use anything they find online without giving credit to its creator or paying for it when necessary, the Internet is not a free-for-all. Teens, like anyone else, have a responsibility to follow copyright law and respect people’s creative work. But teens first need to be educated in how they can use copyrighted work. For example, knowing that they need to get permission before using copyrighted work, and learning how to properly cite the work they use, are good first steps to be-ing respectful digital creators and consumers. Why Does It Matter?

When teens are led astray about what to look out for online, they can find themselves in unhealthy situations without real-izing it. The allure of these kinds of relationships is not surprising, particularly for teens who are already vulnerable. Solici-tors can provide teens with a boost of self-esteem with compliments and attention. And once teens engage in these rela-tionships, they might agree to do things they would not normally do because of the imbalance in power between them and the solicitor. It is often not until much later that they realize that they were being manipulated.

Why Does It Matter?

Some teens might not consider the hard work that goes into creating things like a movie, song, novel, video game, soft-ware, or website. They may not realize that copying and pasting material they find online into schoolwork without citing it is plagiarism. They may not understand that illegally downloading and sharing music, movies, and software is a form of stealing called piracy. Teens need to be educated about these things so they can follow the law and be respectful of other people’s hard work. However, teens should also know about their rights to fair use, which is a principle that allows people to use a small amount of copyrighted material without permission in certain situations, such as for schoolwork, criticizing or commenting on something, or parody. People can also freely use material that’s in the public domain, which includes work that is no longer copyrighted. Many creators use a Creative Commons license, which allows others to download, copy, paste, and sometimes even change creative work – as long as the work is properly cited. Remind teens to consider how they would want others to use their own creative work. This may help them respect the decisions that other creators have made about how their work should be used.

What Families Can Do

How would you feel if someone used your creative work without your permission? What if they changed it or made money from it? (Some teens might be okay with having people use their creative work, while others may not want people to share it or profit from it. How they feel might depend on the type of creative work in question.)

How does it benefit a musician or artist to have their work cited or paid for? (You can discuss how it’s important for artists to get paid for their hard work, and how giving credit to someone helps them receive recognition and praise.)

Common sense says:

Encourage legal downloading and sharing. Teens should use legitimate online retailers for music and movie downloads. They can also listen to music or watch movies and TV for free on certain streaming sites.

Illegal downloading and sharing sites pose risks. Discourage teens from using peer-to-peer (PTP) sharing sites, which not only raise legal risks, but can make computers vulnerable to viruses, identity theft, and spyware. PTP sites also might nega-tively affect the content creators who may not get credit or payment for their work.

Help teens give credit to the work they use. If your teen creates something that incorporates others’ work, help them to

Office 365 Available to Students ____________ submitted by KellyAnn Allen

UHS students have available to them from the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) an Office 365 ac-count. This account gives the student on-line access to e-mail, OneDrive (which is on-line storage) and popular Microsoft products such as Word, Excel, Power Point, and One Note. The newest feature is Sway. Short tuto-rials are available at http://wvde.state.wv.us/technology/office365/

Ms. Allen has been working with teachers in the classroom to introduce Office 365 and show them how to use it this year. All students have an account, but might not be using it. All students should take advantage of this won-derful tool to help with their school work and enhance their technology skills.

Along with this account are five licenses of Office 2016 that can be downloaded and installed on home PCs, lap-tops and MACs. Look for the “install now” button on your student’s Office 365 account.

June 2016 Issue

give credit to the work they’ve used. For schoolwork, students are taught to include citations, which are descriptions of the sources they use that include information about the author, title, publisher, and year of publication. Remind them it’s just as important to give credit for a video mash-up created for fun as it is for a research paper for school.

Is it fair use? Your teen might be making video remixes, mash-ups, fan fiction, blogs, or artwork and posting it online. Fair use allows creators to use a small amount of copyrighted material without permission, in certain situations. Help your teen decide if work they use is protected by fair use.

Challenge teens to take ownership of their work. Teens should think about how they want others to use their creations. Have they thought about how they’d like others to be able to use their photos, writing, artwork, or videos? If so, do they clearly state this to others when they upload their work online? If they are interested in having their work freely available to others, they can use Creative Commons licenses.
