Vancouver Island
University’s motto,
Discoveries in Education,
was adopted in 1969
when the institution,
known then as Malaspina College, was first
inaugurated. Recalling Captain Alejandro
Malaspina, who explored the Vancouver
Island region in the 18th century, VIU’s
Coat of Arms pays tribute to exploration
by depicting a Spanish barque under full
sail. The motto also creates a link with
one of Captain Malaspina’s ships - the
Descubierta - which means Discovery.
The Coat of Arms is displayed proudly
onstage during the graduation convocation
ceremonies in which VIU acknowledges the
achievements, successes, exploration, and
discovery of each graduating student.

I honour the Coast Salish peoples on whose ancestral lands this great University does its work. I also honour and congratulate the VIU graduates of January 2015, and recognize the work it has taken for you to reach this point in your lives – it’s quite an achievement!
Graduates, you are leaving the University in a time of great change and a time of great opportunity. Events and changes happening in the world, and to Mother Earth, are causing us to make a collective shift of consciousness, from seeing the world through the lens of self to understanding that we are all connected. Compassion is needed so that we can co-operate with each other to address the serious issues facing our world today. Your education at VIU has given you the skills and abilities to embrace this challenge, with confidence and optimism.
I hope that you will seek out the opportunity to put your education to work to contribute to the new story of reconciliation that is unfolding in our relationship with Indigenous Peoples. Outdated colonial doctrines are being challenged, inspired by new ways of living together. Your VIU education has prepared you to be a part of this story. It has introduced you to valuing different perspectives, cultures and worldviews; it has also exposed you to ancient Snuneymuxw laws and legal orders, which are entwined in ceremony. Take your VIU experiences and contribute to creating a more just and peaceful society that promotes unity by celebrating diversity.
I would also like to take a moment to remember and appreciate all who have made this possible, especially your friends and families – their love and dreams for you have encouraged you to achieve your educational goals.
I extend our gratitude to Dr. Ralph Nilson, the Board and Senate for their inspiring dream of a multi-cultural learning environment; removing barriers to education through programs such as the Tuition Waiver for Youth in Care; welcoming international students; establishing a Centre for Pre-Confederation Treaties and Reconciliation and a Shqwi qwal for Indigenous Dialogue; and pursuing academic excellence. They have designed a path so that our talents and diverse ways of understanding the world can make important contributions to our collective future. VIU's partners in education, community leaders, alumni, donors and colleagues around the world have created capacity and connection through positive collaborations.
Graduates, know that the world changes one person at a time, but that change becomes increasingly easier the more there are who change. You are the change – each one of you. Use the gift of education you have received and pass on the love that has been given to you. Now, leave here and change the course of history.

L ouise Mandell , Q.C., LL .D. (hon.), Q.C., LL .D. (hon.)
Louise Mandell Q.C., one of Canada’s foremost Aboriginal rights lawyers and a tireless advocate for Canada’s First Nations, is Vancouver Island University’s second chancellor.
In 1983, Mandell was one of the founding partners of Mandell Pinder, a law firm specializing in Aboriginal and treaty rights law. She is still connected to the firm in the esteemed capacity of Partner Emeritus.
Mandell received a Degree in Education at UBC before graduating from Law School, and was selected by the UBC
Faculty of Law as one of the two outstanding alumni from each decade.
She was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1997 and, in 2001, was awarded the Georges Goyer Q.C. Memorial Award for exceptional contribution to the development of Aboriginal and Treaty Rights jurisprudence across the country. In 2013, the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs recognized and honoured her by creating The Louise Mandell Legal Research Collection.
Passionate about education, Mandell uses her skills as a public speaker at workshops and forums and also as a writer to pass on her knowledge and expertise of the law as it relates to the rights of Canada’s Aboriginal people.
Mandell embodies many of VIU’s values through her work with First Nations communities, and also recognizes the important role education plays in the reconciliation of Canada’s Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.
Ho n o r a r y D e g r e e sThe awarding of honorary doctorates is intended to encourage a standard of excellence and innovation which is exemplary to students, faculty and staff, and to society in general. Vancouver Island University awards honorary doctorates to publicly acknowledge members of society who exhibit a record of outstanding distinction and achievement in an area related to Vancouver Island University’s mission, such as, but not limited to, scholarship, research, teaching, the creative arts, business and industry, international affairs, or public service. Recipients are nominated by members of the community or by VIU employees.
Honorary Doctor of Laws is awarded for accomplishments and contributions in areas such as politics, justice and social activism.
Honorary Doctor of Letters is awarded for scholarly accomplishments and contributions in areas such as social science, theory and literature.
Honorary Doctor of Science is awarded for accomplishments and contributions in science.
Honorary Doctor of Technology is awarded for accomplishments and contributions in applied areas related to science and technology.
2015 Honorary Doctor of L aws – His Excellency the R ight Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada
When the Right Honourable David Johnston was installed as the
28th governor general of Canada on October 1, 2010, his remarks focused on “A Smart and Caring Nation: A Call to Service.”
He has since travelled widely across Canada, speaking with Canadians about the importance of giving, learning, innovation and family, and asking them what they will contribute to Canada as we approach our country’s 150th birthday in 2017.
His Excellency was born and raised in northern Ontario. His twin passions for sport and learning led to an undergraduate degree at Harvard, where he was twice named to the All-American hockey team and inducted as a hockey player into Harvard’s Athletic Hall of Fame; to law degrees at Cambridge and Queen’s universities; and to a lifelong dedication to higher education.
7c o n v o c a t i o n p r o g r a m | j a n u a r y 2 9 & 3 0 , 2 0 1 5
During his 44-year academic career, he served as dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Western Ontario, in London; as principal of McGill University, in Montréal; and as president of the University of Waterloo.
He served on many provincial and federal task forces and committees, as well as on the boards of a number of companies. He married his high school sweetheart, Sharon Johnston. Together, they have five daughters and 11 grandchildren.
2015 Honorary Doctor of L aws – Her Excellency Sharon Johnston
Her Excellency Sharon Johnston began her working career in Kingston, Ontario, as a psychiatric occupational therapist with young adults at Kingston General Hospital, and then as a therapist
at Beechgrove, a treatment centre for young children with learning and behavioural problems. When the Johnston family moved to Toronto, she worked at the Crippled Children’s Centre in Occupational Therapy.
Mrs. Johnston completed her studies in physical and occupational therapy at the University of Toronto. Later, she completed a Bachelor of Science at the University of Western Ontario, a Master of Science at McGill University, and obtained her Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Science at McGill University. She also wrote an autobiographical essay for inclusion in a collection on notable women of Montréal.
Mrs. Johnston was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
2015 Honorary Doctor of Science – Crawford S. “Buzz” Holling, PhD, OC
One of Canada’s best-known forest entomologists, Dr. Buzz Holling gained international recognition for his work in the management of natural resources.
Currently a Professor in Ecological Sciences at the University of Florida, Dr. Holling introduced important ideas in the application of ecology and evolution. His pioneering methods in adaptive ecosystem management paved the way for modern movements in sustainability and conservation.
His work is frequently cited in the fields of ecology, environmental management, ecological economics and the human dimensions of global change. His leadership in both academic research and social responsibility has literally transformed the world.
Dr. Holling obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in 1957 at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and a Doctor of Science at University of Guelph in 1998. His public prominence dates from his work at UBC, where he became a professor of zoology in 1967 and served as director of the Institute of Animal Resource Ecology from 1969 to 1973. He also served as director of the International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis in Vienna from 1981-1984.
Dr. Holling is a recipient of many awards, including the honours of Officer, Order of Canada; the Austrian Cross of Honour for Arts and Science; the Eminent Ecologist Award of the Ecological Society of America and the Kenneth Boulding Memorial Prize from the International Society for Ecological Economics.
Dr. Holling is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and a foreign Fellow of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

8 This program was prepared a week before Convocation and therefore may not be complete.
VIU’s graduation convocation ceremony begins with a procession of the graduating students, faculty, and distinguished guests into the theatre, led by a bagpiper and the Valedictorian.
When the platform party has assembled onstage, a smaller procession, known as the Chancellor’s Procession enters the theatre, accompanied by the drumming by VIU’s Elders-in-Residence. The Chancellor’s Procession consists of the Chancellor, President, Board Chair, Vice-Presidents, Registrar, and macebearer.
Paddle
The paddle that is carried in and out of the theatre by the President was given to the University by Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo, VIU's first Chancellor. This paddle, made by Brian Bob, Qwuyutsapulth of the Coast Salish/Ucluelet First Nation, is carved of yellow cedar and signifies teamwork, pulling together, like in a canoe. The salmon carved onto the blade represents journeys; salmon leave the place where they are hatched but return later in their lives, much in the same way that youth earn an education and then return home to bring their skills and knowledge back to their communities. During his installation celebrations, Chief Atleo presented a paddle to each of the four campuses with the wish that it be used at special occasions, like a graduation ceremony. The paddle given to the Nanaimo campus is used to guide us in our important journeys. It has since become an important symbol and tradition in our convocation ceremonies.
Mace
During the Middle Ages, a metal-clad wooden mace was an effective weapon in battle. As newer and more powerful arms were developed, its military significance diminished, and it was transformed into a symbol of authority. Today, the ceremonial mace is used in many government assembly locations, such as the British and Canadian Houses of Parliament, and is carried before ecclesiastical dignitaries and in university ceremonies such as this.
The mace used for VIU’s convocation was designed and created by retired art instructor John A. Charnetski in 1994. The metre-long mace is made of stainless steel and gold-plated cast bronze. It features four guardian eagles and enameled medallions bearing VIU’s coat of arms and arbutus emblems.
