2018 UFWH SUMMIT:FROM POVERTY TO PROMISE

Each year hundreds of students, representing UFWH activities at campuses around the world, gather to share best practices and inspiration, listen to world-renowned keynote speakers and honor extraordinary student leaders. The Summit has been hosted at various campuses around the world – including George Washington University in Washington DC, Guelph University in Ontario, Canada and National University of Agriculture (UNA) in Honduras.

SPEAKER DIRECTORYRod Brooks has served as CEO of Rise Against Hunger since July 2006. He provides leadership and direction toward the achievement of the organization’s mission to end world hunger, focusing on service programs, fundraising, financial and

administrative management. Rod has spent nearly twenty years working in the non-profit sector. Prior to directing Rise Against Hunger, Rod worked for sixteen years creating Exploris (now titled Marbles Kid’s Museum), an interactive museum about the world, ultimately serving as Vice President for Administration.

Rod is active in the community as a member of the Cary Rotary Club, the Raleigh Host Lions Club, Fairmont United Methodist Church and North Carolina Partners of the Americas. He has been recognized for his leadership of Kids Voting Wake County and received the James S. Bramham Humanitarian Award from NC Partners of the Americas.

Ruben Canedo, research and mobilization coordinator at University of California Berkeley’s Centers for Educational Equity and Excellence, co-leads both the UC Berkeley Food Security Committee and the UC Global Food Initiative Food Access

and Security Subcommittee. Canedo has established himself as a national expert on student food security and college campus programs and policies to address the issue. He established and currently coordinates the efforts of campus food security working groups at all 10 UC campuses, and is engaged in actively researching and addressing college student food access and security.

Sarah Marshall serves as a Strategic Communications Specialist for the USAID Bureau for Food Security and the Feed the Future initiative. Prior to joining USAID, she worked for the Peace Corps as the liaison for the Peace Corps Food Security Program, coordinating

annual activities and communication efforts. Sarah was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Jamaica from 2011 to 2014, where she worked alongside community members to mitigate against landslides, taught farmer field schools, and empowered young people to become community leaders.

Sarah has a BA from the University of Kentucky in Community, Communications and Leadership Development, focused on agricultural communications, and a MS degree in agricultural education from Oklahoma State University.

Sonia Massari has a PhD in Food Systems and Interaction Design (Engineering Dept, University of Florence). She is the Academic Director of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Food Studies programs in Rome and Director of

Gustolab International Institute for Food Systems and Sustainability Studies (she works in partnership with 15 U.S. Universities).

Massari teaches at Scuola Politecnica di Design Milan (Master in Food Design), at ISIA Design School Rome (Master in Systemic Design -Sociology of Change Course) and at ROMA Tre University (Sustainability Design Thinking Course). She is currently coordinating the ADI INDEX Food Design commission.

Massari is a scientific consultant and senior researcher for the Barilla Center for Food and Nutrition Foundation and she is a consultant for national TV program on food systems. She teaches "design thinking" at the JRC - The European Commission's science and knowledge service/hubs (Ispra and Seville).

In 2012, Massari won the International “Le Tecnovisionaries” Women Innovation Award, a prize which publicly recognises women who have demonstrated an ability to combine creativity and

innovation in order to improve quality of life, in particular in the area of food and nutrition. In 2014, she won the NAFSA TLS Knowledge Community’s Innovative Research in International Education Award.

Massari is a board member of the Association for the Study of Food and Society (ASFS); a member of Canadian Association Food and Society (CAFS); the WE - Women for Empowerment network; and a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Food Design, Frontiers Journal (on Sustainability) and Temes de Disseny Journal, Elisava Spain.

Deana McDonagh is a Professor of Industrial Design in the School of Art + Design at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and faculty at the Beckman Institute of Advanced Science and Technology. Prior to joining the University of Illinois, she was a Reader

in User-Centred Design at Loughborough University in the UK. She is an Empathic Design Research Strategist who focuses on enhancing quality of life for all through more intuitive and meaningful products, leading to emotional sustainability. Her research concentrates on emotional user-product relationships and how empathy can bring the designer closer to users’ authentic needs.

Vimlendra Sharan is the Director of the North America Liaison Office of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Previously, he has served in various leadership positions focusing on rural development, agriculture and food security issues

and as India’s permanent representative to UN agencies in Rome. He also chaired the International Fund for Agricultural Development’s Evaluation Committee and served as Vice President of the World Food Program Executive Board.

Jennifer Vokoun is an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Walsh University in North Canton, Ohio, and also serves as the Director of the Food Design Institute, facilitating community and faculty engagement through design thinking on food systems issues.

Professor Vokoun teaches courses in graphic design, visual communication, and visual culture and is the faculty leader for the University’s Blouin Global Scholars class of 2020, a living learning community cohort focused on food, sustainability, and hunger in a local and global context. She received her MFA from Kent State University, Ohio; MA at Ursuline College, Ohio; and BFA at Columbus College of Art and Design, Ohio.

In 2017, she was a Design Incubation Fellow, and also participated in design thinking facilitation training with IBM in New York City. Current research interests include design thinking and design for social change as it relates to food access and food insecurity issues.
