Introduction.

The Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH) is a public university, open to the world, offering

prestigious education, excellent research, and quality services facilitating the comprehensive development of its

students and their insertion into the labor market.

The UMH offers 24 Bachelor’s degrees and 24 Official Master’s adapted to the European Higher

Education Area in the fields of arts, experimental and technical sciences, engineering, and health and social

sciences on its four university campuses (Elche, Altea, Orihuela and Sant Joan d´Alacant). The UMH educational

model has as central axis the education of its students, the acquisition of professional skills, doing business

internships, national and international exchanges, and the development of attitudes like effort, initiative, self-

learning and the capacity to undertake. The UMH is equipped with the most modern infrastructure and

technological equipment, making possible the development of new methodologies applicable to all its degree

programs.

The UMH is particularly concerned about its students entering the labor market. Here the University

has excelled, achieving excellent results thanks to the 6,000 businesses maintaining collaboration agreements

with the University. Moreover, it has been confirmed to be an academic institution committed to quality, as it

was recently renewed with the European Seal of Excellence Gold level for the third time. The UMH is the only

Spanish university to obtain this on three occasions.

The UMH has signed many national and international agreements to promote the mobility of its

students and attract foreign students. In its bid for its internationalization, the UMH has set in motion a

complete program of activities to facilitate foreign academic stays and to receive students who wish to complete

their education in our classrooms. Along these lines, the International Relations Office has as objectives to

encourage international projects, promote the UMH’s visibility abroad, and create an environment that favors

cooperation between foreign universities and the UMH in the fields of exchanges of faculty members and

students, dual or shared degrees, and research projects.

As an institution, the UMH is concerned with promoting cultural, sporting and recreational activities as an

essential portion of university life. The University was conceived to be a place where professionals are trained in

different fields of knowledge, but also where persons are trained to be capable of facing the diverse facets and

challenges life offers.

Quality research characterizes the UMH, as a study done by the University of Granada on the research

productivity of Spanish public universities shows. Their study places the UMH in the eighth position for 2010,

and highlighted is its second position when the number of publications in JCR journals is analyzed, its eighth

position for R&D projects, and fourth position for patents. UMH research activities are highly related to its

socioeconomic surroundings, but moreover many of its laboratories possess levels of excellence recognized on

national and international levels.

Employability.

Strong support for the employability and practical education of its students has made the Miguel

Hernández University (UMH) stand out since its creation. Proof of this is that in the last three graduating

classes, the average labor market insertion for UMH graduates one year after finishing their education stands at

93.5%. Other significant data show that 78% of its graduates find work within three months, 71% do so in

positions of responsibility, and the level of satisfaction with their current employment scores 7.8 points out of

10. As for practical education, the UMH presently has agreements with more than 6,000 collaborating entities

(80% within the private sector), and in the last three years, 13,700 internships have occurred.

Satisfaction with the internship program is at 98% for the businesses, and 95% for the students. The

UMH also emphasizes doing international internships through the Hermes program for International Internships

in countries like Japan, Germany, Croatia, The United States, etc.

In order to improve the employability of its students, the UMH organizes several employment workshops each

year focused on the diverse professional fields its students are trained in.

Another University objective is promoting entrepreneurship in its students, through which the UMH has set the

Program of University Entrepreneurs (PEU) in motion. With the PEU, in the past three years, 692 people have

been counseled on starting businesses, 245 have participated in the contest “Validate your business idea-

innovate-undertake”, and 7 entities have adhered to the “Consultants for university students” program. As a

result, 43 businesses have been created, and 47 entrepreneurs from the UMH have won different prizes and

contests.

Within the UMH, the Occupational Observatory is the administrative unit responsible for increasing the

employability levels of its students and graduates and for promoting an entrepreneurial culture and the creation

of businesses. The Observatory also provides professional orientation to UMH students for employment and

assistance for self-employment, for which it regularly publishes guides on professional skills, job search and

business creation. Further information Occupational Observatory.

Visiting UMH.

The Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH) has four campuses located in the Province of Alicante:

Elche (central campus), Orihuela, Sant Joan d’Alacant, and Altea.

The campuses are located within a 50-km radius around the city of Alicante. Alicante’s international airport

(called El Altet, airport code ALC), offers direct flights to and from many European cities. It is located 10 km

from both Elche and Alicante, 80 km from Altea, and 30 km from Orihuela. It is easily reached using the A-7

freeway, as well as by the N-332 and N-340 national roads. The airport is also linked to the cities of Elche and

Alicante by bus. To go there from Elche, use the 1A or 1B lines, while from Alicante this is done via the C6 line.

Subús is the company managing these routes.

The cities of Elche, Orihuela and Alicante are connected by regional trains (Murcia-Alicante). Alicante’s

train station is a 15-minute walk to the airport’s bus stop at the Plaza de Luceros, from where you can continue

Faculty of Fine Arts, Altea.

The Faculty of Fine Arts in Altea was designed to meet the challenges of providing an artistic education

within a contemporary context, in which artistic practices are constantly reformulated. This commitment is

supported by human and material resources and educational planning which provide our students with the

technical and conceptual tools for them to be able to deal with a scenario in which visual arts encompass an

increasingly wider range of professional and cultural practices. The current curriculum for our degree in Fine

Arts responds to new educational needs through the appreciation of tradition, the importance of a

contemporary technical and conceptual education and especially through its integration within a context defined

by media interdisciplinarity. To achieve this, the curriculum includes two distinct programs: “Fine Arts” and

“Visual Arts and Design”. These objectives are met, on the one hand, through the design of our facilities, which

primarily considers accessibility for students and offers them a wide range of specific workshops, and on the

other hand, through our teaching and technical staff, who are committed to an active and personalized

attention towards our students.

The Faculty of Medicine.

The faculty of Medicine aims to educate students as future health professionals in different areas of

action (clinical, research, management) for improving the health of our citizens and eliminate possible social

imbalances in health. Our fundamental objectives are: to educate students as scientists, clinical professionals,

The Faculty of Social and Legal Sciences of Orihuela.

The Faculty of Social and Legal Sciences of Orihuela (Alicante) offers two interrelated degree programs:

Business Administration and Political Sciences and Public Administration. This Faculty is situated in the centre of

the city, and combines an environment rich in culture and traditions with modern installations and a good

communications system for easy access. Teaching staff are from 5 departments (Finance and Economics;

Psychology; Law; Mathematics and Statistics; Social and Human Sciences). The teaching staff comprises 48

full time senior lecturers and 41 part time lecturers, it combines two complementary profiles, lecturers who

work professionally in the area of the subjects they teach and those who are dedicated to research. This

combination within the make-up of the teaching staff means that students can acquire practical and analytical

competence, which will contribute to their insertion in the labour market. Besides the professional qualifications

of the lecturers, the quality of the teaching is based on the number of students per class which as its limited to

60 places means that the student-teacher reationship is close and fluid. Students also have the opportunity to

orient their professional career towards research through different doctorate programs which are organised in

the five departments.

Faculty of Pharmacy.

The Faculty of Pharmacy was founded in 2003 and is dedicated to teaching and research in pharmacy and

related sciences, contributing to the promotion and improvement of health in the population by means of high-

quality, relevant educational and research programs. In order to achieve this, the faculty has staff members

with a solid background, from 15 different departments. who lecture on basic academic subjects to specialized

study ranked UMH in eight position overall, second in terms of JCR listed publications, fourth in terms of

patents, and eight in terms of R&D projects.

UMH research activities are highly related to its socioeconomic surroundings, although many of its laboratories

possess levels of excellence recognized on national and international levels. In this context, UMH’s research

activities are mainly focused in the areas of neuroscience, biotechnology and bioengineering, health sciences,

statistics and operations research, information and communication technologies, industrial technologies,

material sciences, agricultural and environmental engineering.

Research Institutes. The Institute of Neurosciences (IN).

The Institute of Neurosciences (IN) is a joint UMH and CSIC research centre which is devoted to the

study of the structure, function and development of the nervous system in normal and pathological conditions.

The IN is organized into three Research Units which include Developmental Neurobiology, Molecular

Neurobiology and Cellular and Systems Neurobiology. There is a second level of organization based on research

lines. These lines constitute a horizontal organisation grouping members of different research units, around

more specific research subjects and facilitates greater interactions between institute members

The research groups at the IN use a wide variety of techniques covering the fields of molecular and cellular

biology, genetics and physiology. Among the technical resources at the IN are fully equipped laboratories for

cell culture, experimental embryology, which includes technologies such as Optical Projection

Tomography(OPT), confocal and two-photon microscopy, besides special areas for animal behavioural

experiments. The Institute has recently incorporated non-invasive image techniques, such as functional

magnetic resonance imaging. The IN and its researchers maintain active exchange programs with universities,

research centres and neurobiology laboratories around the world. The IN encompasses a staff of 40 researchers

(21 belonging to the UMH, 19 from CSIC), 6 tenure track researchers, 144 pre- and postdoctoral researchers

and more than 100 technical and administrative staff; 60% of the personnel are female and 40% male. The IN

undertakes an important training activity through its International PhD Programme in Neuroscience, which has

been awarded with a mention as “Programme of Excellence” by the Ministry of Education. It also strives to be a

centre of reference in terms of both national and international collaborations between clinical and basic

research groups from a wide range of disciplines. Currently 30% of the postdoctoral staff come from other

countries

In 2010, the budget for the Institute of Neurosciences was more than 13 million €, 6 million of which

corresponded to external resources obtained by researchers competitively. The Institute of Neurosciences

published 252 articles in the four-year period 2007-2010, with an impact factor of 1,506, and an average factor

of 6,01, and a total of 2224 citations. The comparison between the four-year periods of 2000-03 and 2007-10,

shows the evolution of the scientific impact of the Institute: the number of articles has increased by more than

60%, and impact, measured as citations received in both periods has more than doubled.

The Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IBMC).

The Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology aims for a multidisciplinary approach of excellence on a

molecular and cellular level in the areas of biotechnology and health. Research at the IBMC is developed

through two main lines of research: Molecular and Cellular Design and Molecular Diagnosis and Therapy.

The Institute carries out intense translational and transferable technology research programs which have led to

more than 20 registered patents and the creation of “spin-off” companies, besides maintaining an excellent

relation with business and production sectors.

These activities are developed through agreements such as the Cooperation Agreement between the

UMH and the Local Government Health Department (Consellería de Sanidad) for promoting scientific

collaborations and facilitating staff mobility between the IBMC and the University Hospital of Elche and its

Foundation. Moreover, several agreements have been set to establish University-Business Mixed Units, such as

the one with Lipotec group in 2000, in biotechnological and chemical – pharmaceutical field, and later with the

multi-national FMC-Food Tech, in the area of agrofood. In 2010, the IBMC designed and launched the Skin

Research Platform, a public-private initiative aimed at developing molecular and cellular research of

translational excellence in all aspects related to human and animal skin.

Staff at the IBMC comprises 78% researchers (senior, pre- and post-doctoral), 16% technical staff and

6% administration staff (59% of the staff are women and 41% men). During the last five-year period, the IBMC

has obtained funding of 1.5M€ (yearly average), 28% of which corresponds to contracts with companies. It

should be noted that funding received in the last few years includes the CONSOLIDER-INGENIO 2010 project,

with 6.0 M€ over five years, for which the IBMC is the coordinating Centre. With respect to scientific

publications, the IBMC published a yearly average of 62 articles during the last five-year period, with an

average impact factor of 4.27.

The Institute “Operations Research Centre” (CIO).

The University Research Institute “ Operations Research Centre” (CIO) was established in 2005 in order

to support the development of Research in Statistical Optimization and Information Technologies.

The CIO comprises UMH researchers from different fields: statistics, mathematics, computer engineering and

marketing, and they form a qualified interdisciplinary group capable of approaching different problems to be

currently found in the business world. In this short period, the Institute has managed to consolidate 6 research

groups, as well as establishing another 6 emerging groups, all of which are acknowledged in the UMH Group

Register.

One of the Institute’s main priorities is the technological transference to society of basic and applied

research results, which has led to the application for several national and international patents as well as the

creation of a “spinoff” company in the UMH Scientific and Business Park. This Institute continually searches for

ways to improve the quality, efficiency and productivity in both public institutions and private companies.

During the last three years, the scientific and technological transference activity developed by the CIO

staff has contributed to obtaining funding of more than a million euros for its staff participation in 44 research

projects through competitive national and European funding. Likewise, in this same period, 39 contracts have

been made with public administrations and private companies, which have brought more than 251.000 euros

(25% of funding obtained).

The CIO staff is at present made up of 43 researchers, 5 contracted researchers and 2 members for

technical and adminstartive support; 70% are men and 30% women.

you need to. The following must be presented to them:

The Learning Agreement signed by your university and the UMH; the same one that the ORI sent to the office at your university responsible for the exchange.

The Certificate of Stay, in case you need to justify the arrival and departure dates at the UMH to your university.

On the following websites you can find information about the operating hours and locations of the

Management Centers for each campus:

Elche Campus Sant Joan d’Alacant Campus Orihuela Campus Altea Campus

If during the first month of classes you need to change the courses that you initially detailed in the

Learning Agreement, you may present a new proposal signed by you at the Management Center of the campus

or faculty/school where you are taking your UMH classes. They will send this to the ORI, which will then be

responsible for making the changes and informing your university. First-semester foreign students on UMH

stays must take care of this paperwork during October, and second-semester students must do so during

March. It is very important that you follow the instructions given in order to avoid future problems with UMH

course credits transferring. Before returning to your university, you must present the Certificate of Stay from

your university at the Management Center of the Campus where you enrolled upon your arrival. They will sign

the document informing about the end of your stay. Following the examination period, the UMH ORI will send

your grades to the office at your university responsible for the exchange.

Visiting students.

If you are interested in studying at the Miguel Hernández University of Elche for a determined period of

time (a minimum of one semester and a complete academic course maximum), and you do not participate in

any exchange program at your university, you can have an academic stay at the UMH as a “visiting student”.

In order to do this, you must request admission from the Unidad de Acceso, Becas y Atención al

Estudiante (Unit of Access, Grants and Student Attention). In case you are accepted, your UMH stay will not

suppose official academic recognition of the prior education you have already completely, and that which you

take at the UMH will have an exclusive formative character, independent of the academic recognition it may

receive at your university of origin. If you are accepted as a “visiting student”, you will receive accredited

certification that will serve in processing your visa.

For the purpose of registration, “visiting students” will pay the fees that are duly established for each

academic course, and must guarantee that they have a contingency to cover illnesses or accidents that may

occur during their period of stay at the UMH. Registering as a “visiting student” will allow you to take advantage

of the UMH installations and services.

“Visiting students” may take midterm and final examinations and earn the corresponding grade, which will

appear in a specific certificate. To show UMH residence and the results obtained, you may request a Certificate

of Achievement from the University Secretary General if you pass the examinations.

Academic calendar.

The UMH divides its educational activity in two semesters. The first usually begins during the final week

of September and the second in early February, finishing in early June. The first-semester examinations occur

at the end of January and early February, and those for the second semester normally take place in June. In

addition to summer vacation, Easter and Christmas breaks, there are other holidays interrupting classroom

teaching that may be specific to each campus. To find out more about these, further information regarding the

academic calendar is available.

UMH locations.

The UMH has facilities in the cities of Elche, Orihuela, Altea, and Sant Joan d’Alacant. The UMH central

campus is located in Elche, the capital of the Baix Vinalopó region and third-largest city in the Valencian

Community. Its population exceeds 230,000 residents. Walking through Elche’s streets reveals an interesting

and historic city center, where the past is combined in contrast with elements of a young and dynamic city.

Elche is integrated into Europe’s largest palm grove, the Palmeral, and a stroll through it is unique among

urban landscapes. The Palmeral, a legacy of Andalusian agricultural heritage, has been declared a World

Heritage Site by UNESCO. Elche claims another cultural property, el Misteri d’Elx (Elx Mystery Play), which

UNESCO declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. This is a sacred lyrical drama,

the last surviving example of European religious medieval theatre, and is represented every August.

Two UMH campus are located at Orihuela which was the location for the first university in the Province

of Alicante in the 16thcentury. Orihuela is capital of the Vega Baja region, and geographically is the largest

municipality in the Province. The city, situated on the banks of the Segura River, is highlighted by its cultural

and natural heritage, and specifically its historic section (collectively declared historic-artistic and monumental),

its festivals, among those Easter (declared an international tourist attraction), and its beaches. Orihuela is the

birthplace of Miguel Hernández, the poet our University is named after.

Altea is a municipality in the Marina Baixa region, located 50 km from Alicante, 120 km from Valencia,

and 10 km from Benidorm. The city of Altea opens to the coast from one of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful

bays, offering all the charm of a Mediterranean fishing village. Apart from being a well-known and popular

seaside resort, it is also an important meeting place for all types of artists, painters, sculptures, potters, etc.

The UMH Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy are located in the municipality of Sant Joan d’Alacant.

Sant Joan forms part of the l’Alacantí region in the Province of Alicante, and is the geographic center of the old

Huerta (orchard) of Alicante. Located on the Levante coast, it borders the cities of Alicante (7 km distant),

Mutxamel (1 km), and El Campello (3 km).

How to arrive at the UMH.

The five campuses comprising the UMH are located within a 50-km radius around the city of Alicante.

Thanks to its proximity to Alicante’s airport, the seaport of Alicante and its train stations, the University boasts

excellent transportation and communication systems.

Alicante’s international airport (called El Altet, airport code ALC), offers direct flights to and from many

European cities. It is located 10 km from both Elche and Alicante, 80 km from Altea, and 30 km from Orihuela.

It is easily reached using the A-7 freeway, as well as by the N-332 and N-340 national roads.

The airport is also linked to the cities of Elche and Alicante by bus. To go there from Elche, use the 1A or 1B

lines, while from Alicante this is done via the C6 line. Subús is the company managing these routes.

The cities of Elche, Orihuela and Alicante are connected by regional trains (Murcia-Alicante). Alicante’s

train station is a 15-minute walk to the airport’s bus stop at the Plaza de Luceros, from where you can continue

by bus to the Alicante airport (aeropuerto-Alicante line). Travel between Alicante and Altea is also possible on

the tranvía tram. The tram has a station at the Plaza de Luceros, where the bus connecting Alicante with the

airport also stops.

Alicante is also linked with the principal Spanish capitals via medium- and long-distance train lines.

To go to Sant Joan d’Alacant, you can take the bus connecting the airport with Alicante (to the Plaza de Luceros

bus stop), and then continue on the Subús urban bus line 23.

The cities of Alicante and Elche also possess bus service to a large number of European cities on

operators like Eurolines (you can consult their destinations on the respective town hall websites – section

Tráfico y Transportes (Traffic and Transport).

International Relations Office.

The International Relations Office (ORI) has as principal function promoting UMH internationalization

based on a user-focused quality policy within the framework of the strategic lines and direction of the Vice-

rectory of International Relations, among which strengthening the UMH as a destination university for foreign

students by agreements with other foreign universities and institutions is found. Specifically, the ORI functions

are:

Supporting and managing the entire university community’s mobility (students, faculty, administration and services personnel) in national and international mobility programs.

Attracting foreign students and managing their academic records, facilitating their integration into the UMH.

Coordinating and managing language courses on the different campuses.

Assisting the academic faculty in carrying out cooperation projects with the Agencia Española de

Cooperación Internacional (Spanish Agency for International Cooperation).

BUDDY and TANDEM programs.

In order to assist you during your first days at the UMH, the International Relations Office (ORI) offers

the BUDDY Program to mentor foreign students. We recommend that before visiting our University, you consult

their blog or contact the ORI. The ORI will assign you a student tutor whose job is to help you integrate into the

UMH and learn about all our University can offer. Furthermore, if you would like to practice speaking Spanish

and seek friendships with Spanish students who are interested in learning your language, you can participate in

the TANDEM Program for linguistic exchange through the ORI.

Online information.

After enrolling in the UMH as an exchange or visiting student, you will form a part of the UMH

community. Your enrollment will provide you a user name and UMH e-mail address (format: [email protected]).

This user and its corresponding password will provide you with personal access to all the online information

concerning courses, teaching faculty, hours, examinations, office hours, etc., in addition to announcements

about cultural activities, course offerings and general UMH information.

UMH Intelligent Card.

We advise you to request the UMH Intelligent Card at the Management Center ( Centro de Gestión

de Campus ) on your Campus. This card will allow you to identify yourself as a UMH student, provide

interesting discounts in bookstores, shops, for leisure activities, etc. Moreover, it also functions as a debit and

credit card (if you request this option). The Intelligent Card is also utilized for borrowing library books,

accessing UMH installations and the virtual secretary. The virtual secretary allows you, via the terminals

distributed throughout the four University campuses, access to services like consulting academic records,

asking for certifications, paying academic tuition, and consulting the academic calendar.

UMH libraries.

On each UMH Campus, there is a library specialized in the courses taught on that campus. With your

Intelligent Card, you may check out books and other documents there at the loan and consultation services.

Borrowing book stock and document collections belonging to the UMH can be done at any library, independently

of either the document’s or the user’s location. Returning borrowed material can also be done in the same way

at any UMH library. You can also renew the books you have borrowed online. The book stock of our University

is available to you through a search engine. If you would like to photocopy an authorized article or document,

there is a photocopier in the lobby of each library. To use these you need to purchase a card at the copy

service.

The libraries possess computers with internet connections for the University community. Wi-Fi access is

also available for your electronic equipment; request information about the wireless connections at the loan

desk in each library.

The UMH libraries’ hours of operations are the following:

Altea and Orihuela campuses: continuously from 8:30 AM until 9:00 PM. Elche and Sant Joan d’Alacant campuses: continuously from 8:00 AM until 9:00 PM.

The hours of operations of the UMH libraries may vary when class is not in session and during holiday

periods as well; consult these in the library website. The UMH also has study halls available for students

throughout the entire academic course. During examination periods, the UMH provides 24-hour study halls. The

timetables and availability of these halls are announced via the online personal access to all UMH students.

Athletics.

The UMH offers a large variety of sports to participate in, as well as sporting installations, training

courses and open-air activities you can sign up for during your stay. The Secretary of University Extension –

Sports located on the Elche Campus can inform you of all the possibilities.

The majority of the sporting installations at the UMH are located on the Elche Campus. It has paddle

tennis courts, a pool, multi-sport courts, and a golf course. At the UMH Sport Pavilion, there are multi-

disciplinary rooms where you can practice dance, wrestling, spinning, fitness, aerobics, boxing, gymnastics,

Pilates, or have a cardiovascular workout to keep fit. The Orihuela Campus also has paddle tennis courts, a

rugby pitch and multi-sport courts.

To participate in UMH sports, you can acquire the TDU Sporting Card ( TDU Tarjeta Deportiva );

highly recommended if you like to take part in several sports or would like to combine sporting participation

with attending the UMH gymnasium, among others. You can acquire this card from the Secretary of University

Extension; to do so you must provide a passport-sized photo, and this will then provide you access to the

weight room and the pool, among other options. If you would like to reserve a multi-sport or paddle court, you

must send an e-mail to [email protected]. To acquire a pool voucher, visit the concierge in the Altabix and

Hélike buildings.

Throughout the semester, the Secretary of University Extension – Sports offers the possibility of

practicing multiple sporting activities; the proposals will arrive via e-mail or via online personal access as a UMH

student. If you would like to sign up for competitions with the UMH sports teams, contact the Secretary of

University Extension – Sports for information on how to do just this.

University Culture and Extension.

Throughout the year, the Secretary of University Extension – Culture organizes multiple showings,

organized visits, recitals, literary, painting and photography contests, etc. Inform yourself about all their

activities by visiting their blog. You will also receive information via your e-mail or personal access as a UMH

student throughout the course. Examples of these activities include the UMH Choir, the theatre groups “Celda

1009” and “Urbá”, the University Tuna singing groups, in addition to courses and workshops.

Radio UMH.

A University radio station broadcasting to the University community offers various programs about

science, debate, current affairs, sports, etc. Its programming is produced and organized by the University

community (students, faculty and administrative personnel). If you would like to collaborate with Radio UMH or

participate in any of its programs, send suggestions or propose other areas of interest, you can do so at

[email protected]. You can find information about the radio programming and listen to Radio UMH online.

University dining halls.

There are cafeterias and university dining halls on all campuses. In Elche, you will find them in the

buildings of Altabix, La Galia and the Rectorado, offering special prices and menus for students, serving both

normal and low-calorie food choices. The cafeteria in Sant Joan d’Alacant is located on the ground floor of

Edificio I. In Orihuela, this is found on the ground floor in the Tudemir Building.

Students with disabilities.

If you have a disability, we recommend you contact the Área de Atención al Estudiante con

Discapacidad , or ATED (Area of Attention for Students with Disabilities), which forms part of the Unidad de

Acceso, Becas y Atención al Estudiante (Unit of Access, Grants and Student Services) before visiting the

UMH. This office is on the Elche Campus in the Hélike Building (Telephone: +34 96 522 2125, e-mail

[email protected]).

Student Identification card.

In order to take full advantage of your free time and acquire significant discounts, the Institut

Valencià de la Joventut , or IVAJ, (the Valencian Youth Institute), offers you the Carnet Jove card. Its

objective is to facilitate mobility and intercommunication for youth, as well as offer significant discounts in

shops, cultural and sporting activities, transport, trips, and lodging for trips and activities. All persons between

the ages of 14-30 can acquire this card. Its cost is approximately 9 Euros and is valid for two years; it can be

purchased at the UMH Office of the IVAJ (Elche Campus, Observatorio Ocupacional (Occupational

Observatory), Rectorado and Consejo Social Building) or downtown in the city of Alicante. In Alicante, the IVAJ

office is located on the Rambla de Méndez Nuñez #41. Their telephone number is +34 966 478 100 and e-mail

is [email protected].

Banks.

We recommend you open an account in a Spanish bank in order to limit paying commissions for

transfers or payments you may need to make. To open a bank account, you need to go to the bank with your

passport or national identification card in hand. Making an immediate deposit of money is not necessary and

the transaction is immediate. The bank account they provide you will be comprised of 20 numbers that will

serve for your daily transactions. If you would like to receive money from abroad, you will need to ask the bank

for their IBAN or SWIFT/BIC codes from your new account and then you will need to provide this information to

your bank of origin in order to receive foreign transfers.

The International Bank Account Number (or IBAN) is a series of alphanumeric characters that identify a

specific account in a financial entity anywhere in the world. Each bank account corresponds to a single IBAN,

and via the IBAN, the country, entity, office and account are identified. The SWIFT/BIC account code is used

worldwide, while the IBAN is used primarily for operations within the European Union.

Hospitals, Health Clinics and Pharmacies.

If you come from a country within the European Union, your European Health Insurance Card grants

you the right to receive medical attention at any hospital or health clinic. In case of an emergency, we

recommend that you immediately go to the Servicio de Urgencias (Emergency Room) at the nearest

hospital. If, on the contrary, it is not an emergency, you should visit a centro de salud (health clinic). Health

clinics in Spain are distributed by neighborhoods, and so it is very probable that there is one nearby where you

live. Information about all of these is available in the Generalitat Valenciana website. The health clinic will

assign you a general practitioner whom you can see for common ailments.

For health emergencies at University campuses, you may direct yourself to the medical service in the

Hélike Building on the Elche Campus, or to the first aid station on the Orihuela Campus (formerly the concierge

facilities, next to the student delegation). At the Altea Campus, first aid is available in the sculpture workshop.

Pharmacies are usually open from 9 AM-2 PM, and then from 5-7 PM, but many remain open

continuously during the entire day. Farmacias de guardia are pharmacies that remain open all night long,

and these can provide you with any medication you may need after the others have closed. Every pharmacy

posts a list of the current Farmacias de Guardia , and to find the nearest one, visit any pharmacy near you,

and this information will be clearly posted on an exterior window, showing the name, address, and instructions

on how to get there.

Business hours.

Small businesses in Spain are normally open from 9 AM-2 PM and from 5-8 PM. Large shopping centers

and supermarkets are usually open from Monday thru Saturday continuously from 10 AM-10 PM. You can

request home delivery for purchases, although there is usually a surcharge for this on purchases not exceeding

minimum quantities.

Learning Spanish.

At present, most courses at the Miguel Hernández University of Elche are taught in Spanish (when this

is not the case, the course website will indicate as such). In case your level of Spanish is not sufficient, we

recommend that exchange students take Spanish courses before their arrival at the UMH, and that they enroll

in the courses the International Relations Office offers. These courses are also suitable for improving or

perfecting your Spanish, and there are various levels (beginner, intermediate, and advanced). At the beginning

of each academic course, the instructors will conduct a Spanish test to ensure that each student is at the

appropriate level in order to improve their Spanish. Before each semester begins, a three-week intensive

course is offered (four hours a day for a total of 60 hours), essential for those students not possessing good

year. Once the intensive course has finished and when University classes begin, non-intensive semester-length

courses of four hours per week (twice a week) are taught. This course also comprises 60 classroom hours.

When these intensive or non-intensive courses finish, the student will earn a certificate for his/her level

attained and the number of classroom hours completed, provided they have attended the minimum of 80% of

the classroom time and passed the final exam. For information about these courses or to sign up for those of

interest to you, visit the ORI blog. In order to reinforce your Spanish or to interact with Spanish students who

are interested in learning your language, the ORI offers the TANDEM program for linguistic exchange.

This program offers the possibility of contacting another person of a different nationality to strike up a

conversation in your maternal language. This way both persons can improve their pronunciation, vocabulary

and typical jargon of the language they wish to practice, by learning directly from a native speaker.

When your level of Spanish becomes adequate, the Spanish instructors will recommend that you take a

course oriented towards acquiring the DELE, the Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera (Diploma of

Spanish as a foreign language), which is a certification from the Cervantes Institute with international

recognition. You can take the exams to acquire this diploma at the UMH in Elche by paying the corresponding

fees during May and November. For more information about the DELE, visit the Cervantes Institute official

website.

International Partners.

In order to strengthen its internationalization, in recent years the UMH has increased the collaboration

agreements it has with foreign universities, and strengthened exchanges of students, instructors and

researchers. Despite this increase, the UMH is ever interested in fostering its international relations and

growing its number of foreign partners. For this, those institutions interested in collaborating with the UMH can

contact the Vice-rectory of International Relations at [email protected].

The following list details the centers that have active collaboration agreements with the UMH.
