Charles Pillmore's brother Norton was n9med forhis father's brother Rev Norton Fillmore, whowas author of several books on Theology.

The name Fillmore evidently is of Hebrew origin.In England spelled Phllmore. Derived fromPhilip, who lived on the Moor.

Your letter was rec'd Just as we were leaving LosAngeles and I have several excuses for delay in not soonerreplying, one 18 that I have been looking for a book sent tome by Millard Pillmore some seventy years ago, giving ahistory of the Fillmore family, which I have not so far beenable to flnd.

An I remember it the family sprang from John Pillmorewho wau captilled by pirates on the shores of England when aboy of 13. He waa with the pirates 18 years before he escape.6in Boston'harbor. He married and had a large family. TheyScattered,in various parts of U. 3. A. and Canada. My fatherwas from Buffalo, 1110 name was Henry Olezen Fillmore. Hisfather's name was Sherlock Pillmore. Hls mother's maldon namewas Lavina Slosson. My father was named for an uncle GlezenPillmore, who was a quite famous Methodist minister in westernNew York. Father·had one slater and three brothers.

MV mother was born in New Brunswick, Nove Scotia.: Her natenrras Msry Georgania Stone. Her mother wes Welsh. Her

father full-blooded Englighman. Do not know date of birth ordeath.

I was born Aug 22, 1854 on a Chippewa Indian reserva-tion near St. Cloud, Minnnesota. Had but one brother, NortonPillmore (no Disters). He was namod after father's uncle, Rev.Norton. Fillmore, nuthor of a number of books in Theology. Iwas named Charles Sherlock Fillmore, but never used the middlename.

This is about all I know of our family.

We will bo in Los Angeles next winter, from Oct. toApl, 4065 Woodman Ave., Sherman Oaks.

CRIGIN 

An English local name, from Fell-mere; "the Lake (mere) in the fell, or moor",

in other words, the "lake moor". The name Filmore may sometimes be from the Cl,1

English feld ("field") and maera ("high, lofty"): "the high field". Filmore is

also believed to be of Celtio origin, frcm Fileamor, that is, the great (Mor) the

bard or sinzer filea. The anoient Celtic filea was a poet whose duty was to com-

pose verses about the history and faith of his people, a profession similar to that

of the bard and scald. In medieval centuries, Filmore was variously spelled: Fyl-

mere, Filmar, Filmour, and Fillmore. Millard Fillmore, (1800-1874), thirteenth

president of the United States, was born in New York. Many family names are of

local orimin, derived from the names of towns, cities, and landed estates. A

glance through our atlas will reveal that many names cf towns and places are al-

so cannon as family names. Names endine in: berg, don, dun, ham, ford, lay, stow,

thorp, thwaite, worth are usually of local derivation, and in many cases the pro-

genitors of families bearing such names came from, or lived nearby, the places in-

dicated by their surnames.

Millard Fillmore, born in 1800 and thirteenth President of the Dnited States,

was the son of Nathaniel and Phoebe (Millard) Fillmore. His education was ir-

regular and incomplete, as he was early cempelled to work at odd jobs to earn a

living. He began to read law in his spare time and in 1823 was admitted to the

bar. In 1841 when the Whigs came into national power, Mr. Fillmore became his prty'E

leader in the House. In 1848 he ,•ras nominated for Vice President on the ticket

with Zaohary Taylor. Rucceedin, te the Presidency upcn Taylorts death, he signed

the famous oomprcmise measures of 1850. He aFPointed lobster as Secretary of

State, emphasized the dootrine of r.on-inter.·ention in forele:n disputes, and ar

proved the Perry treaty opening Japan to We3tern ccmmerce.

Parker Fillmore, author, bankers was tern at Cincinnati, (hio, on September

21, 1878. He was the son of William Adon and Adelaide Martha Susan (Malloy)

Fillmore. He received a B.A. desree frcm the University of Cincinnati in 1901

and remained urmarried. Mr. Fillmore Iris a government teacher in the Phillip•

pine Islands from 1901 to 1904; was a member of the firs of W.H. Fillmo re & Co.,

bar:kers of Cincinnati, beginning in 1904.

Charles Fillmoro, cleryman, educator, was torn at Indian Reservation, Minne-

sota, on August 22, 1854, the son of Henry Gleason and Mary Gecrgina Fillmore.

Mr. Fillmore married Myrtle Faze of Clinton, Misscuri in March, 1881, and married

Secendly, Cora G. Dedrich, en December 31, 1933. He had three children by his

first wife: Lcwell, W. Rickert, and Royal.

Waldo Rickert Fillmore, seorntary of Unity: School of Chri3tianity, was bern

at Pueblo, Colorado, on June 1, 1884, the son of Charles and Myrtle (Paee) Fill-

more. He married Harriett Collins ef Ed<erton, Kansas, en September 5, 1919. They

had two children: Charles Rickert, and Resemary. Mr. Fillmore be<an his career

as an artist.

Elisha Edgerton Fillmore, mizinc en,ineer, was bern in Zanesville, Chio, on

February 7, 1882. Ho was the son ef Graham E. and Arr.ie (Burtch) Fillmore. Mr•

Fillmore married, in New Lexington, Chic, on reamber 19, 1914, Nera Thorpe They

had ono laughter, Jean Marie.

Horbort Worth Fillmore, mechanical or.gineer, was born in Torrace Park, Chio,

on May 10, 1892, Ho was the sen of Frederick A. and Laura Ferris (Moore) Fillmare.

Mr. Fil]more Started with the Cincinnati Milling Machine Company as apprentice in

f the machine shop and later in the office.

Mr. William Haydook Fillmore, son of Mrs. dillard F. Fillmore, of San Fran-

M cisco, Califo mia, married, but the date of his marriage is not disclosed.

Prominent in the Social Register of Cinoinnati, was Mr. William H. Fillmore.

ated from the University of Tennessee, Colleme of Medicine, in 1901. Doctor Fill-

Rollin Slossen Fillmore, Jr., of Jackstoro, Texas, was born in 1889. He Fradu-

ated from the ,Vashington University, School of Medicine, in 1912. He was issuedt i

a license to practice medicine in the state of Texas in 1926. Licenses to practioe

medicine in other states are not shown in this physicianis data.

rootcr Rollin S. Fillmore of Long Beach, California, was born in 1854 and

graduated from the Missouri Medical College of St. Louis, in 1683. Doctor Fill-

more retired from active practicing.
