The selfless gift from a generous Methodist Alumnus, provided Methodist College students the opportunity of a lifetime. In the summer of 2015, ten students from Methodist College traveled to Cleveland, TN to work with the volunteer Remote Area Medical (RAM) clinic.

Amy, a Methodist College Senior, reflects on this opportunity. “While in Tennessee, we were able to get a taste of what life is like for the people in the region. On Saturday afternoon, some of us went white water rafting. While rafting, our guide told us that he had previously lived in Elgin, Illinois but moved back to Tennessee. He said, “I need my mountains. I missed my mountains.”

This is something that played in my head off and on for the remainder of our trip. The Appalachians are home to many and one thing I have had heard over and over from people who live there or used to live there is the love of the mountains.

One question people ask me when I speak about the poverty and health issues to the people in that region is, “Why don’t they just move?” The answer is not that easy. There is such a deep, rich history that is unique to that area. To assume that someone would just move away from that is unfair. If those people move from their home, the problems will still exist to those who are left behind. It doesn’t fix the issue at all.

Part of providing culturally competent care to people is understanding their values and where they come from. The root issues must be addressed and the gaps need to be filled in. In order to provide effective care, we need to meet the patient where they are. We need to go to their mountains and understand their culture. We need to treat the patent holistically and this is true for all of our patients.”

The Foundation is proud of the rich history and tradition that Methodist College has in providing nursing education and thrilled to be a part of the journey to educate not just nurses, but the future healthcare workers of tomorrow.

A smoker since 19, Diana didn’t want to know if she had lung cancer. A nagging feeling and a commercial for a free screening led her to make an appointment at UnityPoint Health - Methodist. Diana’s initial screening showed a small nodule and COPD diagnosis. That diagnosis caused her to quit smoking and led her to regular check-ups with her doctor. It was in a regular check-up that they caught her lung cancer about a year after her initial lung cancer screening. Diana feels fortunate; she caught this early -- before there wasn’t time to get anything done.

Experiencing Professional Nursing In a Different Way

Diana's StoryA free screening saved her life

Diana’s advice to others is to get checked. It only takes a few minutes, it doesn’t hurt.

She tells anyone who will listen, “Why wouldn’t you do it,

it can save your life.”

Diane thanks the Foundation for providing funding so she could get

this life saving screening.

Gala - Razzle Dazzle Event

Saturday, October 24, 2015

Thanks for joining us!

Over 550 Foundation supporters danced the night away at the 15th Annual Autumn Affair on October 24, 2105. With a 1920’s theme, the Civic Center ballroom served both as a speakeasy for the cocktail party and an elegant room for dining and dancing. President and CEO Debbie Simon shared a Foundation video telling patient stories about services and equipment purchased by the Foundation with your contributions. From a patient who discovered she had lung cancer as a result of a lung screening program to a single dad who has benefited from the care his three children have received from one of the in school health clinics. Foundation funds are helping to fulfill the mission of Best Outcome for Every Patient Every Time.

Roberta Parks, Vice President of the Foundation, had the opportunity to share a video of students and faculty members at Methodist College talking about the impact the new campus, opening in the fall of 2016, will have on them. Half of the proceeds from this year’s event will be directed to the Methodist College Expansion Campaign. Total proceeds from this year’s event were $325,000. Thanks to all of the sponsors and the people who joined us for Razzle Dazzle, a 1920’s Affair to Remember!

While providing care for Paul, nurses at UnityPoint Health - Proctor know that communication is key. Paul’s wife Ruby was by his side during his entire stay and was thrilled with the care he received. A key factor in feeling comfort and support, was the presence of the Nurse Manager. Julie Fronam used the opportunity presented during her iPad Rounding, to keep the communication lines open between herself, the patients and their families. Ruby was excited for Paul to be able to go home, but until that happened she knews he is in good hands. The Foundation funded the purchase of iPads for each nurse manager at UnityPoint Health - Peoria. These iPads, are a communication tool for each of them with a goal of continuing to provide consistent care and communication. The Foundation is proud to be a partner in providing The Best Outcome For Every Patient Every Time.

Making a connection using technologyCecil is a single father of three school aged children and the UnityPoint Health- Methodist | Proctor In-School Health Program helps to relieve some of his struggles. “I don’t know where I would be without them,” Cecil said. His children take multiple medications, including breathing treatments and the In School Health program makes it possible for him to get to work, for his children to get their proper medicine and for him to feel confident as a parent that they are getting the care they need.

Dawn Rockhold is a Medical Office Assistant at Scott Altman School in Pekin. She sees several hundred children and impacts not only their lives, but their entire families. Dawn’s role is to provide medications, but also comfort, support and reassurance to the children she serves. Sometimes giving the children attention, a mint or a hug will help them get through the rest of their day. Not only does the student benefit by being able to stay in school, the parents benefit by not having to miss work.

The Foundation is proud to play a role in providing financial support to the UnityPoint In-School Health program. Located in 22 schools, 6,000 childrens lives were impacted in Peoria, Morton, Pekin and the surrounding areas in 2014.

Thank you for helping us make a difference in the lives of so many Peoria area children.
