Grand Knights Report

Brothers All,

October was designated by our Supreme Knight as our Membership Blitz month. We began the month by hosting a Sec-ond Degree at our Council on Saturday, October 3rd where sixteen new Second Degree Knights were initiated. The fol-lowing weekend our Membership Director, Matt Leonard, displayed his incredible commitment to and endurance in covering every mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral during our Blitz weekend. His efforts were rewarded two weeks later at our second First Degree of the year with two new brothers, Vernon Shelton and Joseph “Dutch” Hedrisk, and another dozen or so prospects. Our new brother, Vernon, stepped up at his first business meeting and filled in as the Outside Guard. Way to go, Vernon. In addition, George Shelly transferred into council last month as well.

Our Knight of the Month was Carmine Sachitello. Carmine has been a steadfast participant in the events going on at the Council. It’s hard to remember an event occurring where Carmine and his lovely wife, Anna, were not greeting us at the door. I was surprised to learn that this was the first time in twelve years that Carmine was our Knight of the Month. I feel honored to correct that obvious oversight. Our Family of the Month was the family of Jack Chesnick. Like Carmine and Anna, Jack and Marge seem to participate in every event held at our Council including being active participants in our Op L.A.M.B. street drive. PGK Jerry Santoro reported that we have now received donations of just over $21,000.00 from the street drive and corporate donations so far. I will be mailing letters later this month requesting a personal dona-tion from each you. Please contribute what you can afford to this very worthy cause.

Finally, I want to recognize Chris Weir, Dave Anderson, Matt Leonard, Innocent Modilim and Larry and Donald “DJ” Pavic for making their Fourth Degree at the annual exemplification. Please join me in congratulating these new Sir Knights.

See you at the next meeting!

“10 Facts About WW II You May Or May Not Know”

by Carmine Sacchitello PGK 1. 85% of all U.S. servicemen being shipped overseas into combat felt they would be killed or wounded.

2. The P-$& was a fighter escort that could also carry six 5’ rockets, 2,000 lbs of bombs plus eight .50 caliber machine guns. That’s a heavy load for a single engine aircraft.

3. On Iwo Jima there were so many wounded Marines that Corpsman (medics) used 400 pints of blood in one day. There were 28,000 wounded and 6,700 dead in the three Marine divisions that fought there.

4. U.S. fliers had the least chance of survival than any other branch of the service.

5. 50% of anyone hit by machine gun fire died, while 20% hit by artillery fire died.

6. The song “I’ll be home for Christmas” was banned by Armed Forces radio during the Christmas season in Europe in 1944.

7. Five of six men in the U.S. Armed forces never experienced combat (think about that).

8. On D-Day, June 6th 1944, the U.S. Air force flew 14,000 sorties compared to just 250 by the Luftwaffe (German air Force). A sortie is one plane on one combat mission. (10 planes on a combat mission is 10 sorties, 1,000 planes on a combat mission is 1,000 sorties etc.etc.)

9. Wartime President Harry S. Truman’s middle initial doesn’t stand for anything. It was given to him when he was born to honor both his grandparents.

10. “Women in WW II”: WAC= Woman's Army Corp. Waves= Woman accepted for volunteer emergency service. Wasp= Woman’s air force service pilots. Rosie the riveter= all women who worked on the home front.. P.S. My oldest sister worked on the Norden Bombsite Project. It was aid that the bombsite could drop a bomb from 25,000 ft into a pickle barrel!

Correction: In last months newsletter Jim Humphrys PGK reported to send all Op L.A.M.B donations to Micael Ames. All Op L.A.M.B Donations should be mailed to: John Gouldie 2409 Ferguson Rd, Raleigh 27612

Council Christmas Party

This years annual Adults only Christmas Party will be held on Friday, December 18th and it will start at 6:30 PM. The past few years Your Columbus Club has footed the bill for the party with dinner, an open bar and some cute gag gifts for all. Unfortunately, this year we need to change a few things. Dinners main course will be pro-vided by The Columbus Club and we ask that all who attend bring the following:

• Last name begins with A through H, please bring an appetizer.

• Last name begins with I through P, please bring a side or vegetable dish.

• Last name begins with Q through Z, please bring a dessert.

We sincerely appreciate your understanding as your Columbus Club struggles through these tough economic times as some of you are as well. Together we can still celebrate a Merry Christmas. Thank you.

Do you see what is going on around you? Back in January 2007, Joshua Bell, one of the most accomplished violinists in the world, took up a challenge. He per-formed as a street musician at a subway station in Washington DC. For 45 minutes, he played five Bach pieces on his personal 3.5 million dollar Stradivarius violin. What happened? Of the 2000+ folks that passed by, only 1 recognized him (I wouldn’t), only 6 stopped to listen to him. Check it out at: http://www.snopes.com/music/artists/bell.asp Don’t we succumb to this same pattern? We don’t seem to stop and appreciate what is around you. How often do you pass by a person at church, or at the grocery and not acknowledge them? How often do you seem to forget what is around you? When was the last time you told your wife and kids that you cared for them? Okay, let’s go one better, when was the last time you thanked your pastor for being a priest? Sad isn’t it! We all need to step back, take a deep breath, and see what is around us for what it is. Even something like Adopt-a-Highway, you can find some real treasures on the side of the road, and make a difference. Volunteer, don’t wait to be asked. I guarantee that you will find some-thing exciting in the task at hand (yes, even working on the council grounds can be a plus!)

So where am I?

Back in April, 1966, I became an 18 yr old, a senior at St. Edward’s High School, my dad was Grand Knight, I had no chance, and no option. I became a Knight! Was I asked….NOPE…(I was told)… did I know what I was getting into….NOPE….(he said trust me!)….did I appreciate what the Knights were all about….NOPE…(the members all seemed to be old grey-haired men that liked to play poker, drink beer and complain about politics (sound familiar?). But I was a Knight of Council #1017 the Capital City Council in Austin Texas. Back then, you had to have insurance if you were under 26. So I became an insurance member. My dad took me to all three degrees. Still didn’t understand what the order was about, or why I was a Knight, I only knew that my Dad was one, I was one, and I followed his lead. So what did he lead me to?….stay tuned!

Council 2546 Annual Fruit Drive

It’s that time of year again when your council offers fruit to the parishioners at Sacred Heart Cathedral, St Joseph’s and Our Lady Of Lourdes. The dates this year are Sunday December 6th and Sunday December 13th. As always we need lots of help at all three churches and if you are not a team already, now’s the time to get on one and help this most worthy cause.

Ron Duffy PGK heads up the crew at Sacred Heart, Jerry Santoro PGK does his thing at St. Joseph’s and Rich Ferraro rounds it out at Our Lady of Lourdes.

The oranges and grapefruits we sell of the highest quality and whether you help sell the fruit, buy some fruit or both, it is a great way to get the Christmas spirit revved up.

Council Clean Up

On a beautiful fall day, about 15 energetic members from the Council and some family members brought rakes, shovels, saws, axes, picks and trimmers and did a great job of pruning, trimming, weeding, tilling and planting around the Coun-cils vast grounds. Whether it was Matt Leonhard and his sons Corey and Sean tilling up some earth or Ed Richardson and his son Richie digging and planting trees or Michael Ames and Ron Duffy weeding the beds in front of the Council and all the rest who joined in, it was a busy day at the council. Needless to say a lot got done, but as always there is always more to do. I will say this however, “the more the merrier never rang more true”. It was indeed a pleasure to see so many of us out there pitching in as we Knights are used to doing. We are truly blessed to have such a beautiful council home and we should all take pride in helping to keep it looking great ....it is a re-flection on all of us!

Thanks to all for your help and God bless.

Rich Ferraro PGK

50/50 Raffle Dinner We had a wonderful turnout for the raffle dinner. Over 125 people attended the dinner and WHAT a DINNER!!!! Chris Weir, Jerry Santoro and Dave Anderson cooked one of the tastiest dinners our club has ever served. Gentlemen, I cannot thank you enough for all you help and knowledge. Everyone I talked to thoroughly enjoy the dinner.

We had Deacon Leo Tapler say the blessing. It was a true joy to talk to the man. Very humble and kind. After the 1st drawings Grand Knight Dave Bayard gave a short but grateful speech and then introduced Immediate PSD John Gouldie who spoke about Op L.A.M.B. and Special Olympics in the Raleigh area. Brother Gouldie then presented a check for $1800.00 to Brian Philpot of Special Olympics raised at our Golf outing this past June. Also in attendance from Special Olympics were Keith Fishburn (president Raleigh area) Joey Flores (Special Olympics athlete) and Tony Flores, Joey Dad and coach. We continued with the bottles of cheer raffle which yours truly won a bottle. However, my wife took it and I will never get to see it again. Dan Danford won a bottle and chose the Seagram 7. Thanks a lot, Dan!!! Brother Ray Tremblay won $200 in the final drawing. After the drawings and dinner we had karaoke in the bar. What a turnout!!!!! Our little lounge was packed. Some highlights on singing: Carmine did a wonderful job on “My Way” Little Danny Danford belted out ”Taking Care of Business” Charlie and Lisa Dobbins and gang really scored with "I love this Bar”

I want to thank the Columbus Club board of Ray Tremblay, Gerry Ryan, Jeff B., GK Dave Bayard, Jerry Santoro and a very special thanks to Rich Ferraro for all his help.

Also, thank you very much Brother Frank Casey for tend-ing the bar. I know they worked you hard Frank. You did a superb job!! Many thanks to Tom Monck and Vinnie Shee-han for making the bar run smoothly. Finally, thanks go out to Dan and Maryjo for a great karaoke night. It is truly an honor to know you.

The 50/50 Raffle dinner shows just how dedicated all of you brothers are about our club. We all pitched in and had a wonderful evening. It is truly an honor to say “I am a Knight of Columbus at Council #2546. Thank you to all!!!!
